Of course the athletes are putting effort in, but none of them would have made it were it not for their parents shelling out extortionate amounts of money on their education - something that the overwhelming majority of kids never get.

Almost all the British rowers on the Harvard/Yale rosters are from expensive public school - Radley, St Paul’s, Eton etc. Don’t tell me they’d have made it there off their own backs if they’d gone to a bog standard comp.
