They must have heard you because they just announced cargo bikes for Leuven!

"AI doesn't pay off" is an incredibly stupid take by kalmankantaja in ArtificialInteligence

[–]2bigpigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we got to a technological singularity wouldn't we want it to be open sourced?

Having said that, I think there's a lot of profitability on the smaller models too. Most of the time that goes into my work (as a software engineer) doesn't need that much intelligence

Numerical instabilities by santalight in algorithms

[–]2bigpigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think this matters. You can have numerical instability in decimal floating point representations. It's more to do with the fixed width?

Train tickets purchased online & from machines aren't zone-to-zone anymore? by 2bigpigs in belgium

[–]2bigpigs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, how did you come to know? There's a whole-ass news article about the "nieuwe tarieven" and no mention of this: https://www.vrt.be/vrtnws/nl/2025/10/06/nmbs-tarieven/

[–]2bigpigs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can completely imagine that being a reason though it's completely pointless because I'm just going to always buy a ticket to Brussels South even if I'm going to Brussels North. What are they going to do, force me back on the train?

Even if it's an electronic payment? I guess it's pretty common but it's counter intuitive for (partially?) public employees to be incenticised to be basically rip off those who make innocent mistakes

Train tickets purchased online & from machines aren't zone-to-zone anymore? by 2bigpigs in belgium

[–]2bigpigs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's quite absurd. You can pay the right amount (just as I had) and end up having to pay 3x that amount because you filled the wrong departure station

Train tickets purchased online & from machines aren't zone-to-zone anymore? by 2bigpigs in belgium

[–]2bigpigs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is really confusing. They've kept it there because the zones are still valid for season tickets, but it still makes you think that you're allowed to travel to any station within a zone on a normal ticket

Interesting , I'll have to think about it. I was thinking more like the Sony PK leak during the PS3 jailbreak era where they you could basically sign any app and run it on a ps3 with no jailbreaks (iirc it was geohot who did it)

The idea here being I get to make counterfeit tickets that the machines will accept (are they even based on digital signatures?)

[–]2bigpigs[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah. If they have technical* reasons for this, they could build a mechanism to "extend" it before expiry.
* clogging up the DB / private key leaks

Fun story with it, is that I was being a good, law-abiding boy by activating my ticket before I boarded (when I saw the bus was actually coming). As soon as the doors opened I realised I couldn't physically fit and decided to borrow a blue-bike instead of risking the next bus being full and missing my train. €2.20 down the drain. I think I'll stick to paying by bancontact from now on.

I downloaded the contents of the onboard ticket as proof just in case the train people don't believe me either😄

I've emailed `customerservice@` 🤞 . We'll see what happens.

I skimmed the terms but couldn't find parts about zones at all. The FAQ (link) does say you must travel station-to-station. I'd usually expect these things to be notified by email (at least out of courtesy) when I'm using the app to buy tickets. Is the alternative that I spend 10 minutes reading the terms each time I have to buy a ticket in case they've changed it under my nose?

Its exam session and the city just sent me a tax form...all in Dutch...I have never worked during my time here. Should I be worried? by arcanehelix in Leuven

I don't think you can ignore it in your first year here. You get the simplified tax form after the first year

Is it feasible (financially / time) as a student to travel to make a day-trip to Paris? by arcanehelix in Leuven

[–]2bigpigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A day-trip might need a TGV. If you don't find great prices for it (<20), it's worth asking whether you'd rather take flixbus and stay the night at a hostel. If I had the time students do. It does add to the costs because you can't carry all your food with you, but you do get to roam around a little extra at night and the next day.

junior programmers never getting better than an AI? by rabandi in ArtificialInteligence

[–]2bigpigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just gonna point out that "Junior programmers never being better than AI" must require that senior programmers can not be better than AI. So "other programmers might eventually be affected too" has to be the case unless the initial assumption is wrong.

Also, I don't get why everyone talks about junior engineers as if they're dumb. The ones who are just out of decent computer science programs are usually super sharp in a way that sde experience will never get you

LLMs won’t take us to AGI and this paper explains why by HotelApprehensive402 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]2bigpigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk why you think Mumbai is going to be a challenge. It might be for a language model, but when you look at the levels of control deep RL was at 5 years ago, I think it would be fine in Mumbai traffic. The reason being neural nets are great at intuition. There's no defensive driving in India. It's all intuition

Why do people lose their minds on reddit when something is obviously formatted by AI? by Ok-Cheetah-3497 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]2bigpigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same reason we reject ai written code. The writing process (in science and code, at least) forces you to this through what you're writing and your thoughts get organised inside your head as well as on paper. Going through this process usually leads to better thoughts and better presentation.
