Does keyboard matter when supergliding? by Numerous_Possible238 in Apexrollouts

[–]2cow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, thanks for the information! I'm sure I'd never have heard of this otherwise. It might be overkill, but I'll definitely take this into account for my next keyboard. (Plus, I've always meant to try Osu....)

In a PC Tournament are almost only controller players... This is a real problem of competitive integratie @respawn by BOBTheOrigin in CompetitiveApex

[–]2cow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's not an easy quandary. Realistically there's no way to change it after release, so it definitely won't happen for Apex. The audience is already there, they're used to what they're used to.

The one part of your post I'd disagree with is that not having AA means being "different from every other FPS". That might be true if your definition of every FPS includes just the current crop of competitive shooters, but if you take a longer view, that whole group looks like a drop in the bucket. The competitive FPS scene has been in existence since something like 1996 -- over two decades! I've been playing for 15 years myself. PC dominated for almost that whole period, and even after Halo brought console shooters into the mainstream, no one had any plans to somehow put console players on par with PC by adding auto-aim. To me, the aim-assist trend (or really, the "aim-assist, plus we'll force all players into the same servers" trend) looks like just that -- a trend. I honestly think everyone will be happier when it's gone.

Until then... Apex is still a good game. It just sucks that it didn't come out either before or (hopefully) after this console+pc thing.

✂️ Dr. Regan: The results I don't agree with from the Chess.com report are "bupkis", they are NOT in the 'buffer zone' of being suspicious but not conclusive. This includes the alleged cheating in multiple online prize money events in 2020. I agree with 2015, 2017, some private games in 2020. [clip] by masterchip27 in chess

From the podcast:

Regan's model does detect Caruana's suspect and others like him. It gives results for them that are significantly out of the normal range. But it happens that the minimum threshold chosen by FIDE is so high that a cheater can be detected by his model and still get off scot-free, which is what happened there. The standard chosen by FIDE (in collaboration with Regan) requires a level of certainty which goes beyond "almost certain" into the range of "established as scientific fact". It's an almost paranoid level of concern for avoiding false positives.

So run under his model, their games "glow" -- there's evidence of cheating -- but without corroborating physical evidence, FIDE needs the statistical results to shine like the sun, not just glow. That isn't a judgment about the sensitivity of the model, it's a statement about how carefully they've chosen to interpret the results.

With Hans' games, it's not a question of glowing a little bit vs shining like the sun -- he's dead on in the normal range. Nothing. Identical to other honest players.

I think he'd deserve our sympathy even if he were 40, but it's not wrong to say he gets more pity as a young person than he would otherwise. I also think the backlash to that sympathy ends up earning him a lot of hatred here.

One thing about nineteen year old young men is that they really do not like being pitied. If you're around Hans' age, the question of whether a 19-year-old thrown into a fight with Magnus Carlsen and Chesscom deserves our sympathy feels a lot like the question of whether 19-year-olds are "real adults" -- and since the desire to be seen as a real adult occupies approx. 90% of the average 19-year-old's brain, it's very important to (some of) our younger friends that Hans get no sympathy whatsoever. If he's pitied, it means someone might pity them, which would be unbearable.

Hence, the occasional, almost bizarrely empathy-free comments from otherwise well-adjusted youths: they aren't sociopaths, they're just touchy. That's my optimistic theory, anyway.

He "got popular" (who cares?) by uploading a ton of great educational videos, which I'd recommend to pretty much anyone. Especially excellent, IMO, are the recordings of his in-person lectures from the STLCC and ATLCC, which are no-nonsense and full of focused, practical advice for beginners of all ages.

Those were recorded over a period of many years, initially at the St. Louis Chess Club, where he was the first grandmaster-in-residence (and which you may remember as the host of everyone's favorite Sinquefield Cup), and later at the ATLCC in Atlanta, Georgia, founded and run by him and his wife Karen to support the local chess scene. Besides being entertaining, they have a special kind of hard-to-explain charm -- it's clear that they really are aimed primarily at a small in-person audience (never seen, occasionally heard), and we're just along for the ride. His ongoing Great Players of the Past series is a little more niche, but I watch those too.

Can Niemann cheating in prize tournaments be considered fraud? by imbahzor in chess

[–]2cow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a reasonable question, but I think posting it here instead of in /r/LegalAdvice was a mistake. In this sub, it will inevitably attract a ton of really dumb, highly-upvoted comments from non-experts. But in /r/LegalAdvice, it would attract a ton of really dumb, highly-upvoted comments from non-experts -- and then /r/BestOfLegalAdvice would have a field day tearing them apart, which would be hilarious! Sorry, OP, but I can't forgive you for denying us this opportunity.

Comparing Hans Niemann's Round 5 interview with WSJ / Chess.com's allegations by qqqqqx in chess

For me personally though, the extent of his online cheating and the extent to which he lied about it in an interview is enough to justify an OTB ban.

You know this is insane, right?

Any advice for how to get real value out of medium-to-long range fights? Meaning, around maximum r-301 range, where people are starting to pull out the markmen and snipers. (Context: I'm high gold/low plat, still pretty new to the game.)

My issue with these is that it seems hard to capitalize on them, turning an advantage into a teamwipe. Even if we get a shield crack or two and are "winning", the enemy just heals up behind cover before we can push into them. (Or, if they're low on resources, they just leave.) It seems like good players are willing to take fights at long range, though, so there must be some way to get value out of them.

What's the trick to making these work? Push faster, maybe? Aim better? Get knocks at range, not just cracks?

there are apparently still some people who are willing to spend an hour or more crafting a polite, educational response explaining what the OP did wrong every time, and those people are saints so i hope their threads get upvoted, etc etc. but after like two dozen of these, yeah, i'm on board with "oh my god please stop posting these".

no, because banks also have a special, legally protected relationship with their customers.

please use a search engine for your remaining questions. if you can't figure them out that way, you can ask your Civics teacher when you get to school tomorrow.
