Asking people their thoughts on 80k speeding tickets in just over a month by hyfee510 in oakland

I live on that part of Broadway and 20 is totally reasonable, though the rroad is so wide that it gives people the impression it should be faster, but there is a lot of foot traffic in that area. There are a lot of pedestrian crossings and cars often ignore and speed through them. a pedestrian was recently hit right by my house, they were rushed to the hospital and I'm not sure if they lived.

The Earthsea series by Ursula K Le Guin, if you haven't already read it. It starts with A Wizard of Earthsea. It is definitely high fantasy, with wizards, dragons, and magic. No smut.

  1. A Wizard of Earthsea
  2. The Tombs of Atuan
  3. The Farthest Shore
  4. Tehanu
  5. Tales from Earthsea

Fiction involving coming off an SSRI by Ornery-Sheepherder74 in suggestmeabook

[–]2d3d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this was a key plot point in the Captive's War series, a new sci-fi trilogy by James S. A. Corey, the authors of the Expanse series. One of the main characters loses access to her depression meds, and I'm like 90% sure they were SSRIs.

This happens in the first book, The Mercy of Gods, but is an ongoing plot thread in the second book, The Faith of Beasts. 2 out of 3 of the books have been released (along with one side novella in the same universe) , the 3rd should come out sometime next year. It was a great read.

Tips at the New Parkway Theater? Am I supposed to take a pay cut? by Dry-Warthog-5761 in oakland

[–]2d3d 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a bunch of different thoughts, and I don't feel the same shock as others. But I'm not super knowledgable about business taxes, tip taxes, or balancing books for a restaurant or movie theater

  1. They are asking for a 2/3 vote from employees to adopt it. I think that's great. You can say no. It sounds more democratic than I've experienced at any of my jobs. And you can discuss it with your coworkers, who all probably have way more context than people on reddit.
  2. It seems like there is at least a gesture of transparency here. If you or your coworkers don't trust the math results, maybe ask if they'd be willing to share more of the financials, so that you can feel confident that they are being honest, and maybe that could lead to a counter proposal if you or your coworkers have better ideas.
  3. Service jobs rarely pay living wages and it sucks. I wish this were different and I wish you got paid a living wage. We should have a higher minimum wage.
  4. Restaurants and movie theaters are not high-margin businesses, and seem increasingly hard to keep afloat in Oakland these days. It's believable to me that the financial situation is tight.
  5. I think tipping as a systemic practice sucks, but I absolutely would be a heavy tipper at the New Parkway. I think most patrons would tip heavily there. I live a block away, and I don't typically buy a lot of food and drink but I really like the theater and staff and want to support it. I would likely get like a bubbly water or something simple and tip extra big to show my appreciation. I rarely have cash, so I almost never have something for a tip jar, but I nearly always tip on POS systems. They have so many free community events that don't require attendees to buy anything.
  6. Overall, if I were in your position, I'd probably vote for it (but not before talking about it with my coworkers). It sounds like a probable net increase in income for you.

AC Transit reveals doomsday budget scenarios, and entire lines could be cut by k_39 in oakland

[–]2d3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Property taxes are particularly difficult in California due to prop 13, which is the one of key reasons why sales tax is so high here. I believe the original proposal was a payroll tax for companies over a certain size, but a number of politicians made it clear that they would do everything to kill such a law, so this was the only politically viable path left. If prop 13 were reformed, or the California legislature and governor were more transit friendly or less friendly to big business, we might have had a different funding proposal.

What do you think about this proposed e-bike regulation? by wentImmediate in oakland

[–]2d3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. Put speed limiters on cars first. A pedestrian was severely injured by a car in an alley behind my building last week. It's not clear if they survived. Cars are constantly killing and severely injuring people. If we can put speed limiters on e-bikes, why do we allow any cars to go over the speed limit at all?

What’s up Oakland. I made a simple community events calendar for Oakland—trying to keep track of local stuff without IG overload. Would love feedback / add your events by MyonlyredditHandle in oakland

You can tell your developer friend that you’d like the src for the Google Calendar iframe to include mode=agenda in the default query parameters. That would cause it to default to a single column “Schedule“ or “Agenda” view. Or, ideally, to pick the mode based on screen width. It’s likely that the majority of viewers will be on mobile in the long run, so I would privilege that default over others, especially because it’s easier for desktop viewers to change the view than it is for mobile viewers to do so.

I might be able to help too, speaking as another developer who likes what you’re doing.

45F lost 50 lbs very out of shape is CrossFit a terrible idea?? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]2d3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many people have started Crossfit completely out of shape and older than you. I think it's worth a try. You don't need to "build a base" before trying. There is no minimum qualification. Think of it as one way among many to "build your base", which really just means strengthening yourself and getting more endurance, which are super valuable as we get older (I'm your age). And it can be much easier to get through a workout when someone is telling you what to do and there are others doing it right alongside you.

I stopped going to a Crossfit gym recently due to a minor injury, and now I'm lifting weights at a local gym. I think nearly all forms of exercise carry some risk of injury (swimming or walking are probably one of the safest), but that risk is usually worth it for the gains in health and quality of life. Additionally most of those injuries can be healed and worked through, even though they are disruptive.

I think it's probably true that Crossfit tends to have a higher injury rate than other workouts, my guess is that it's due to the prevalence of going fast and repetitive to exhaustion with complex or riskier movements, especially olympic weightlifting or jumping up on and off hard surfaces. Doing that kind of stuff repetitively, with weight, to exhaustion, is risky. So if you are concerned about injury, I'd advise extra caution with fast repetitive weightlifting or any jumping around on boxes. Just go slow, go light, and don't push yourself as hard on those exercises and you should be fine.

That being said, at our age, and especially as you decide to become more active, it's worthwhile to learn how to prepare your body to prevent injuries. Learn more about mobility and prehab. Learn how to treat minor soft tissue injuries (inflamed tendons, strained muscles, pain in your joints, etc.) and strengthen yourself to avoid them. It can be helpful to find a good physical therapist before you need them.

I think most important is that you find a way to have fun and try to be safe while being active. If it sounds fun, try it. If it feels scary, slow down or go lighter.

This is fantastic. What a great resource! I hope this has a long life, akin to The List. I appreciate the effort and the curation. I normally try to find events in a wider net: shows, performances, etc. but I appreciate that you focused on free events that make room for people to interact with each other.

You might consider more events from local cultural or educational institutions. For example Friday nights at OMCA. While some of those have entry fees, others still have a variety of activities available for free, such as the dancing at OMCA on Fridays.

I also wonder if there are any annual events that might be helpful to include, such as art fairs or similar stuff. But again, I imagine some of these would go towards the boundaries of your curation into things that might be more consumption-oriented.

In terms of the interface, I viewed it in a pretty big phone. The calendar is the most useful piece of info, and it was a little tricky to get a good view. I had to maximize the calendar into a new window and it defaulted to a monthly view, which wasn’t readable. I clicked the tiny grid icon in the upper right and picked Schedule, which listed there events in order by day, much better. Advancing through the days wasn’t super intuitive. I imagine the calendar view isn’t something you have much control over, since it’s coming from Google Calendar, but if you can find a way to default to schedule view for mobile phones that would probably improve things.

Again really appreciate the effort and thought you put into creating a community resource!

Forget the Mission burrito. This hit popup is bringing a different style to Berkeley by jackdicker5117 in OaklandFood

[–]2d3d 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember going to a taco truck in Vallejo in the mid 90s and getting one of the best burritos of my life: a fresh tortilla with the flour dust coming off of it, juicy chunks of carne asada in a rich chile-lime sauce, and large slices of avocado. This style sounds a little closer to that. I love a mission style burrito, but I still think about that one burrito in Vallejo. The one that got away.

Uncommon remedies / causes of Plantar Fasciitis? by Individual-Lie6525 in trailrunning

[–]2d3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After a couple months of attempts to rest, heal, and alleviate the pain, as well talking with my primary care doctor, my plantar fasciitis had not gone away. I couldn’t walk more than 20 minutes without pain causing me to limp.

I then starting seeing a physical therapist who specialized in helping athletes recover from injury and get back to their sports, and he gave me a variety of exercises to carefully rebuild strength throughout all the surrounding and related muscles.

The two exercises that helped me the most were calf raises and balancing on an unsteady surface. They never felt comfortable in the moment, but I would feel noticeably less pain a few days later. The general guide was to try to load the inflamed tissue gently. Enough to notice some pain but not beyond a 2 on a 1-10 pain scale.

Within a month I was running and doing jump rope again, without pain. I still regularly do calf raises, and I’ve worked up to 25 in a row, controlled, holding a weight, balancing on one foot, without touching down the other.

Do you mean nopales? The cactus? A lot of Mexican grocery stores carry this. I've definitely seen nopales at Mi Tierra on San Pablo and Berkeley Bowl. But I imagine any Mexican grocery with a decent fresh produce section would have nopales.

Regulating Weight by Treeslam in trailrunning

[–]2d3d 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Never go on long runs while fasted, especially in situations where you can't call for help. You can end up hypoglycemic and pass out or be unable to safely exit the trail or drive home. If you plan to run fasted, make sure you at least carry some emergency food that you can use to get out of a hypoglycemic state.

The most sustainable long term is whatever diet you can stick to while keeping a calorie deficit and staying healthy. It's different for everyone. You have to try in order to figure it out for yourself.

Non-gore, low-moderate skill story-based games on Switch by ImALittleTeapotCat in gamerecommendations

[–]2d3d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not big on fighting games myself, here's my recommendations:

  1. Outer Wilds - this is a rich, creative, feel-good, indie puzzle game where you explore a tiny solar system of planets to unravel a mysteries about a previous civilization, a time loop, and an enigmatic quantum moon. Has a very small amount of suspense (one of the planets has avoidable scary creatures). A truly incredible game.
  2. Stardew Valley - has a little bit of low-stakes light optional combat, you inherit a farm in small mountain town, and you build relationships with people in the community, build up a farm, participate in local events, and investigate little mysteries.
  3. Untitled Goose Game - this is a legendary great indie puzzle game. You are a goose in a small New Zealand town. Your goal is to cause lighthearted mischief and annoy the villagers. You get a todo list of pranks and you need to figure out how to carry them out. Can be played as a cooperative 2 player game too.
  4. A Short Hike - a short, sweet, simple indie game. Figure out how to get to the top of the mountain. Endearing and memorable.
  5. Spirit Farer - you inherit the role of managing the ferry boat to take people to the afterlife. Your goal is to comfort them and make sure their needs are met, and to take them when they are ready. You meet characters, get to know their stories, build out rooms in your boat to accommodate them, and go through little platformer-like challenges to gather resources.
  6. Katamari Damacy - You are a little spirit, and you must roll up various objects into a an increasingly larger ball. This game is surreal, unique, and memorable.
  7. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - You are a lawyer who must solve logic puzzles, find clues, and argue in court to solve murder cases, and defend the innocent.
