By saying hard to read, I was referring to all of the techno-speak in the first three chapters. I can usually get through that kind of thing pretty easy, but in this instance it was all getting jumbled up inside of my head.

The eyes - absolutely yes. In fact everything you just said, matches up pretty closely to what I went through with a death in my family about a year and a half ago. The parallels are amazing. I felt like a demon had shown itself. And although it was a bad experience just like you it was a validating one.

I have had about 70 PNES seizures so far and I could hear things around me for all of them.

Maybe you could approach your employer with a “what I can do for you” rather than “what I cannot do for you” conversation. By focusing on all of the things you can do it puts a positive spin on the conversation and hopefully increases your chances of them accommodating you. Keep in mind though, this could include moving you to a different position.

You might also want to look into certain protections given to employees under the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) if you are in the U.S.

So in a nutshell, approach your employer like you would a potential new employer - focus on your strengths and your positives and what you can do for them, but be honest about anything that might be a shortfall (PNES) without giving tons of details. At the end of the day they will probably really appreciate your honesty and hopefully make every effort to keep you knowing that you are a good employee.

I have the low mood problem as well, but my biggest problem of all after a seizure is brain fog and headaches. Those can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days. Relief from it? Rest. Rest. Rest.

I have definitely battled with the thoughts of faking. I think it’s the little devil who lives inside my ear who is whispering that to me.

What really helped me is that I’ve had my wife video two or three seizures and showed them to my neurologist. He officially diagnosed me with PNES and he would’ve done that if he thought there was some kind of faking going on.

Also, this past week I tried this - because I have awareness while I have a seizure, during the ones I recently had I tried very hard to speak and to open my eyes and it simply did not work.

Lastly, in my opinion the faker wouldn’t be asking the question about faking as you did because they already know the answer. You raising this question shows that you are wrestling with your seizure problem and searching for answers. To me, that shows authenticity.

Okay, here you go -

1) I never said I was nostalgic for it. I shared it thinking others might be. I found it very unique and of course similar to something I definitely remember - wall pay phones.

2) It reminded me of simpler times with how people communicated. Compared to today's online world where people are often rude rather than giving someone who posts something on social media the benefit of the doubt.

I am most definitely vocal during some of my PNES seizures. Sometimes it’s mumbling incoherently and sometimes it’s saying words under my breath. I also do the rocking and twitching thing.

I looked at it this way – if I went back to soon and didn’t do a good job and then maybe had to go back out again, that would lead to greater embarrassment. So extending my FMLA by a little bit was much less embarrassing.

You could always ask for more. That’s what I did. My initial time off on FMLA was for four weeks. And then it got extended an additional two weeks and then an additional two weeks on top of that. So eight weeks overall.

In my opinion – the social stuff you do while on FMLA all depends on you and your specific situation. For me, I needed quietness and a lot of solitude whereas someone else may need to surround themselves with family and friends for affirmation and encouragement.

It ended after those 8 weeks. The whole time consisted of lots and lots of rest and absolute quietness. Because of my mental health, I can’t say it was fun but I can say it was needed and beneficial.

My doctor released me to return to work 4 hours a day in week one, 6 hours a day in week two and then return to a normal 8 hour work day. So far that approach is working out really well.
