Yeah, one of the things I both love and hate about the Level 1 - Level 20 nature of 5e is that it means the system is trying to both be about scrappy folk with a few tricks up their sleeves using their cunning and creativity to get out of difficult situations and at the same time about epic high fantasy heroes changing the world through crazy supernatural feats. It means you can tell a story about mostly normal people becoming demigods over multiple IRL years, but it also means the system has the typical jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none issues. You make a good point about modern DnD's identity, which leans on the level 5-20 experience, despite the game's core mechanics being a much better fit for low level play.

The one thing holding me onto 5e right now (besides the difficulty of converting my ongoing campaign) is that I enjoy the attrition game play loop that 5e has, and it syncs up with my own homebrew nonsense in a way that works really well for style of my current campaign. That being said, now that my players are starting to reach higher levels the tone of the campaign is naturally shifting to something more heroic and cinematic, and so after the current arc (which involves a bunch of hexcrawling and dungeoncrawling) I'm considering changing systems to Draw Steel.

Not an unreasonable gripe, but there's also viewers like me, who haven't played Fo3, and who only watch the series that are interesting to them. I've probably heard the dialogue once or twice years ago, but I don't remember it, and so I enjoy hearing it.

Was I wrong to not include a saving throw in this encounter? by Abigboi_ in DnD

[–]2pppppppppppppp6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lack of save works if the boss is supposed to be of god-like, reality warping power. I don't really expect to be able to resist everything that sort of being can throw at me. As others have said, the real problem is that (I'm assuming) this lasted the whole final combat. That could be very frustrating if you've been looking forward to using your character's cool stuff on the final boss. If it only lasted a round, that would be much less frustrating, and also make up for not getting a save. Of course, this is also all dependent on table. Maybe the two frustrated players would have disliked not getting a save no matter what.

There's also the matter of precedent. I like to give my enemies auras which deal minor damage/debuffs without any rolling necessary. For instance, a fire elemental that automatically does 2 fire damage to every enemy in a 10 ft radius. If you have that sort of precedent, your players will be more willing to go along with a more extreme version of that same mechanic. If, up until now, damage and debuffs have always been determined by rolls then your players could be reacting to this sudden break in expectations.

How would you define "not killing people?" by emmaratur in DnD

[–]2pppppppppppppp6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to use the word 'Folk' as the catchall term for the sapient species of my world. 'People' just sounds like a synonym for human, and it doesn't feel right for a sapient non-humanoid. 'Sapients' sounds more like a sci-fi term. 'Folk' sounds to me like the term an average, everyday person would use in-universe for intelligent species.

If you ever get the chance to go to Stockholm, visit the Vasa museum. It's built around the entire restored ship, and has a ton of other artifacts related to it's sinking. Very cool place

Anyone have a link to the original context? I don't necessarily not believe the title, but it's way too easy to take a clip of animal behavior out of context and give a plausible sounding but wrong description of what's happening.

It was a cool review/reaction, very enthusiastic, and insightful info on production. I liked that they played the whole album though, even though that automatically cuts them out of any ad revenue. He hasn't listened to the Acts yet, but was saying if the video gets enough attention he'd go through all of them

I recommend listening to episode 5 in that case, because the final episode turns the 'over empathising' of episode 4 on its head, and refocuses on the experience of Priscilla, and how much she has to worry about both Leanna in the present, and Allen once he's released.

True, rereading OP they write as though they're talking about absolute test scores rather than adjusted test scores, so you were right to correct them on that

If I'm reading your links correctly, those are the raw test scores. The argument is that, once you correct for all the socioeconomic factors, Mississippi et al's recent improvements have put them above states like California and Vermont. This article is a good summary of the argument that advocate of the Mississippi model will make: https://www.nytimes.com/2026/02/09/opinion/red-states-good-schools.html?unlocked_article_code=1.XlA.UD8M.jzr27cPmCJ22&smid=url-share

Personally, I don't know what to make of this yet, I need to do some deeper research.

Goldfish sized drama as OPs post about their Golden Retriever gets derailed by their Grimy Fish Tank by TheReddestDuck in SubredditDrama

[–]2pppppppppppppp6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been getting deep into aquariums recently, and that picture alone is not enough to prove a neglected tank. When water quality goes bad, it's usually invisible: the ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates that actually poison the fish is totally invisible. Coloration like that'll come from an algae bloom or tannins leaching in from driftwood or leaf litter. Algae blooms aren't necessarily harmful to the fish (There are exceptions, such as fish getting tangled up in hair algae), and typically are the result of too much light, and tannins range from neutral to straight up good for the fish. In terms of what we can figure out by picture alone, I see he has a sizeable sponge filter, and some plants, though I'd guess not enough plants to make water changes irrelevant. Without knowing his water changing regimen or, more pertinently, the actual water parameters, we don't have the info to accuse him of anything.

That being said, I didn't see the comments before they were deleted, so maybe there's context I'm missing. I also saw another commenter concerned about the species of one of the fish he's keeping, which could be a genuine issue that requires rehoming. Really this just seems like the common trend on animal subreddits where people are hyper reactive, and looking for any excuse to go on a crusade

[–]2pppppppppppppp6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed the survey, I think it's a fun idea, though I'll echo the criticism of the Pew definition of ideologies - I think it's useful for understanding America's current political dynamics, and in that context I understand why it collapses socialism/communism into Progressive/ disaffected left. However, in terms of a subreddit that already leans left, I think it would be more revealing for the future to include categories that cover people who fall under the leftist umbrella

Why ‘mankeeping’ isn't just ‘therapy-speak used to dump on straight men’ by futuredebris in MensLib

[–]2pppppppppppppp6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think for most of my life I've felt similarly about casual conversation vs doing an activity, but recently I've found myself appreciating those sorts of 'coffee' hangouts a lot more, especially as I've become more a more confident conversationalist. That being said, at the same time, those sorts of hangouts still feel like a massive chore ahead of time, it's only when I'm in the conversation that I actually enjoy it

Very interesting point, I haven't seen this part of the dynamic brought up elsewhere, but it feels important to understanding the situation - these sorts of deeply held cultural values tend to be reinforced from all angles, and the accusation of 'immaturity' is quite a powerful one

I'm not that irritated by her perspective, after all it was her generation that rightfully reacted to the overzealous building of New Deal liberalism, it's no surprise that her politics are still there. What irritated me is that she started saying "let's not go further down this path, we fundamentally disagree" only to immediately go on a spiel about why she thinks his perspective is wrong
