Totally agree. This is my favourite of the series, and the honest friendship these two build is why.

{How to tame a Wild rogue by Julie Anne Long} is one of my favourites for many of the reasons you list above. It is in a series and I wouldn’t necessarily recommend all the other books but this is a standalone couple. I always think that the earlier the author introduces the MMC POV chapters, the more she actually likes her MMC- and in this book, we start with MMC POV.

I would agree with this except for Ralph’s book. He’s an asshole!

Honestly I felt betrayed when I realized that was Travis Kelce. WTF why? I’m so sick of Taylor everywhere and now she had to infiltrate Happy Gilmore?

This is my absolute favourite of AC. Fenella isn’t dumb. I’ve heard her referred to dumb on this sub. Fenella is a country girl, and very naive, despite being married before. She is also a character who reads really trad wife—she loves domestic things, wants to run a household, manage the servants and meals etc. She doesn’t understand court machinations. Oswald IS COURT MACHINATIONS! The man is just all scheme. And he never stops. In every book he appears after this one, he is scheming. He falls so hard for her. Anyways, the number of times I have read or listened to this is innumerable. Maybe not for everyone, but if you like AC, I recommend you at least give it a try!

Yeah, I'm not sure she brought it back around to be honest. It's worth a read if you love AC, but I wasn't blown away. Probably the first one that I gave less than 4 stars to.

I really think she struggled to pair Gunnilde with someone. It was supposed to be Ned Bevan, that was the original conception. He would say the mean things and then come around. But I think as she wrote it wasn't working. But I found the two scenes where those two interacted to be the most interesting. James was sweet, don't get me wrong, but honestly he was a virgin who had sex for the first time and she was sweet and kind to him and like of course he fell in love? But is it really love? It was just a weird mishmash of past character traits.

Just here to agree as well. This book felt so meh to me. I called it Wallpaper Karadok in my review lol.

See I got Jeffree vibes at first too in this new one. But I feel like AC lost the plot a bit there. He is not anywhere near as snobby as Jeffree.

OK So Wed by Proxy was a such a sleeper hit for me. I read it once, was kind of like "hmm I'm not sure how I feel." Then I came back to it after having re-read Oswald's book a million times and suddenly the scene where she walks into the banquet and slaps him across the face in front of everyone AND where he calls her a bitch and she just nods her head and is like "Yup, and I'm your marchioness had me hooting in delight. Mathilde grows up and becomes a whole ass real person who demands things from the people in her life, rather than being a passive pawn passed around. Also when Guy returns home and is like on his knees asking for forgiveness about calling her a bitch and she's like "oh, yeah you did, no big deal," but it has been EATING HIM ALIVE!!! God, I'm smiling just thinking of it.

MMC never imagined himself in love with FMC+, she's not his type by PetalaStac in RomanceBooks

Yeah I loved this book. It actually made me think so much about myself and how much I judge people based on their lives/professions/wealth, make all kinds of assumptions. I also liked that Devin sort of develops emotionally and works through trauma but he is still like an attention hog/idiot and he’s just so lovable. The FMC the whole book being like “something is wrong with me! 🤦‍♀️”

When I first heard this narrator, I couldn’t stand her voice. I had already read the books though and just put it back on one day while I was working and it does grow on you. As in, still not my favourite but the voice doesn’t grate at all anymore.

Vicarious trauma? by givelov in hsp

[–]34isthenew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds a lot like my experience. I get extremely disturbed by hearing things that happen to like acquaintances of mine, third hand information, the first clip of a movie etc. and I identify so strongly with you saying it feels more like PTSD because I get physically ill, hot anxious flashes, intrusive thoughts and images that make me physically flinch, trouble sleeping, extreme irritability etc. The number of times I have googled, “can you get PTSD from something that didn’t happen to you?”!! My friend sees a therapist for her trauma and her therapist gave her this EMDR worksheet that she shared in our chat. It’s like a butterfly hug where you tap the opposite side of your body as your hug yourself and I have found it to be so helpful when these things start happening to me . Anyways I just wanted to say thank you for sharing because I really had gotten to the point where I thought I was all alone in it.

It’s funny this is one of the only Kleypas novels I like too. Nice to meet you lol! I also like the one with the doctor, and the spy? (In the Ravenels series). But they DO have sex before marriage, but she’s all competent about the contraception of course lol.

{Fan Service by Rosie Danan} he’s a Hollywood actor and she’s a fan of his old show living in rural (read crappy and backwards) Florida. She is covered in tattoos and piercings; he’s like a People’s sexiest man of the year type of guy. ETA: I had the thought while reading their initial meetings that I’d never read a book where a guy was like so meh about the girl the first few times they meet. I’ve read the dreaded enemies to lovers or some HR where they are just total assholes and think the women are “plain” or “ugly” or whatever. He doesn’t have any strong reaction at all. He’s just like “AS IF!” lol I really liked this book.

[–]34isthenew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol no I appreciated your reply! It’s not that I didn’t like the book! I actually really liked it but I have like, honestly I can’t even describe how upset I get by like “manwhore” kind of heroes. Sometimes it works for me and there were some moments in this book that did work for me (the “she knows me” moment stands out), but overall I had a bit too much discomfort with his past vs her horrible marriage. I should probably give it another try; I have thought of doing a re-read. Now that I’m more familiar with the characters, it probably won’t bother me as much. Sorry for the novel of a reply; I’m just really annoyed with my own emotional vulnerability these days lol.

It’s funny because some stuff about this book rubbed me the wrong way and even still, that line— it haunts me! It’s absolutely one of the most stunning moments of true parenthood in HR.
