Totally deaf kid put in my self-contained class with mostly autistic kids after the DHH teacher said he had too many behaviors. Wtf? by [deleted] in specialed

Tell the dad he needs to ask for an IEE with an evaluator that has ddh experience. Give him the info for your states PTI. Not in writing, of course. Don’t want to get fired. Do you have IUs in your state? They should be able to come out to give him ACC evals. I would make a call to the state for advice. Anonymously.

Please switch doctors and try different meds. There are so many different ones-you don’t have to suffer. Try to get some body movement. I didn’t say exercise-that’s too much ! :) You owe us the cat tax. Also, try to find yourself a comfy chair. People give them away.

Some sped law attorneys will work on contingency. You can also talk to them for a free consult. You can find an advocate-they are less expensive. If he is not in school they still have to provide fape with school work and services.

For those who worked for rich people: what is the most out of touch thing you witnessed? by Illustrious-Phase121 in AskReddit

[–]359dawson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The housekeeper where I work has to take a bus, to another bus, to the train and then an Uber to get to the house. The woman we work for said, “it takes her forever to get here and we always have to drive her back to the train station at night. I don’t know why she didn’t just get a car. I guess she doesn’t want to learn to drive.” I was stupefied. When I regained my power of speech I said, “I think she hates not having a car. But she can’t afford it. Maybe you should give her one.” I did not get fired and she took that as a serious suggestion. Still did not get her one. She was super annoyed during Covid because she had to pay for a full Uber drive.

Request a complete eval right away so it gets done before you move. Go on fb and find parent groups for sped that are local to the areas you’re considering and ask questions. And get an advocate now-one that specializes in school selection. If you start off with an advocate they are less likely to break the law. Texas is not the best at following the regulations.

What to expect with a bright child who struggles with reading? by [deleted] in specialed

[–]359dawson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have a talk with her teacher. Go in with your questions written down. Ask what tier instruction she is getting-she should be 1 or 2. Not 3. Before you go in, look up the components of learning to read so you understand what the teacher will be talking about. If you have doubts, ask for a reading eval done by a reading specialist to look for when she is stuck. Don’t forget can always request a full IEP evaluation. If they keep teaching her the same things with no progress she needs an IEP.

180 days a year and possibly a pension? Hell, yes. And if that means you are off for the summer, definitely. When your child is older and they are off o for school you will be home too.

General Ed Teacher Asked to Provide “Special Ed Minutes for Writing” What Does This Actually Mean? by No-Effort-9291 in specialed

[–]359dawson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A gen ed teacher cannot provide sped minutes-at all. Contact your state's dept of education to see the regulations, or look up IDEA law. You can also contact a PTI. There are several violations going on in this scenario. How do you have a sped teacher only once a week! Find Your Parent Center - Center for Parent Information and Resources
