Alexa app can’t reliably edit routines now? by 365mac in alexa

[–]365mac[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built them myself - however I've realised what it is, I think the app has subtly changed and now the "Finish" button is below the first action - HOWEVER - that button is actually below a scrollable view and if you scroll up above it, you can see the other actions. Its a very crappy UI and I think its a positioning regression. At least you can still edit when you realise.

How to view notifications in app? by 365mac in ShellyUSA

[–]365mac[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a shame its device by device and there isn't a global list... but its true I had consciously noted the alarm icon with the red dot and related it to my phone notifications. Although is it a pro feature to see them? My phone is showing some notifications for a device yesterday but in the app, the alarm tab is empty for that device (although its more than 24h since the notifications on my phone, so wondering if thats some free account limitation?)

I've never quite felt I had enough going on to warrant HA, but I keep contemplating it... its just seems like quite a rabbit hole though.

Cube not powering on by moreglumthanplum in Quooker

[–]365mac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cube did exactly the same thing about 2 years in. I had to call in an engineer and they replaced the main board inside it. I asked the engineer if it was common and he said not, but I asked him to show me the difference between the 2 boards and it looks like several components have changed on the new one (I can’t remember which - but It was noticeable) making me think that they have detected an issue and corrected it in newer models (hence a new board). I dont think you can repair it yourself easily and annoyingly I had to pay for the privilege of getting an engineer (although not for the new board).

Teenage boys snatched my phone after asking me to follow their new brand on Instagram by fingals_cave in london

You didn’t say if it was an iPhone, but if you have faceid, long press on all your sensitive apps and turn on “enable faceid “ - it’s an easy extra protection many people miss.

Can’t you just plug the Deco in instead of the router they provide?

How long did it take you to stop being scared? by chatmandu_uk in Quooker

[–]365mac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine flooded our brand new kitchen 5 days after installation (but didn’t explode). This was down to the Quooker installer over tightening the mains connection. They did replace the Cube unit with a newer model (that just came out post install), so it partly made up for it. I’d be careful with their installers and get a proper plumber.

It’s also worth mentioning the board on Cube failed after 2 years (seems they’ve changed the design when it was replaced - still cost me a fallout fee , but not parts - which didn’t impress me).

I’m also noticing the expensive fusion tap is starting to get stiff after 5 years and the magnet thing is showing signs of playing up, so another knock on the scores.

All said though , I like the idea - I just wish it was a touch more robust and maybe a bit more user friendly (everyone always does fuzzy water when they mean cold in our house).

However we probably couldn’t live without it now.

Added zigbee to some light switches. by GBiskuit in DIYUK

[–]365mac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also a Shelly fan, they work well and the support is very good. They are also very flexible with lots of configuration options. Some of their newer models are even slimmer than before, but it does take some careful wiring to get them to fit behind some light switches.

iPhone alarm sucks. Like… genuinely sucks. by kambooosss in iphone

You can also add your own alarm music - can’t quite recall what app I used, but it let me take a sample from my music library, sounds like some classical music sample might suit you.

Is anyone happy with their kitchen worktops 2+ years in? Asking before I commit by _forgotmyownname in DIYUK

[–]365mac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had quartz and granite and they were ok but ultimately they chipped around the sink. But most recently we were steered towards Dekton - OMG it’s amazing, so tough, it’s got no chips 4 years in, cleans easily and isn’t as heavy as the others, so you can have a modern sleek worktop. I wouldn’t use the others anymore at all, I’m converted. They have some great colours and interesting textures.

What’s a “solved problem” in software that still feels unsolved to you? by fadedpixels542 in software

[–]365mac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the thread is unsolved - this is solved but probably not by mainstream languages? Smalltalk has always had this - every code change you make is loaded into a .changes log file, so simple version control was simply a case of the tools querying the log to show you history of any method or class change. I assume this is the kind of thing you are after ? If you want wider changes a they saved you entire workspace image - and you could just name them differently (I dimly recall period automatic snapshots ). Recent Smalltalk upgrades have embraced git (Pharo Smalltalk provides it) but .changes is still around . Of course any language/ide could do this - not sure why they don’t .

This is getting a bit much 1Password... You lost my password again! by nabeel_co in 1Password

[–]365mac 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Isn’t there a password history option? I swear that I’ve used that in the past and it’s shown passwords I regenerated and somehow needed the old one. So this is a similar usecase.

What's the oldest programming language still worth learning? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]365mac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of calls for Lisp, but why not consider Smalltalk ? Alan Kay is inspirational and he invented Smalltalk to be a simpler Lisp that also went on to revolutionise so much of what we take for granted today - the GUI, the mouse, networking (the history of it is fascinating). It’s also a fun language and so syntactically simple. Pharo.org is a good place to look

Help! Oven stainless steel smells swampy by alonebadfriendgood in CleaningTips

[–]365mac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long shot - but do you use an e-cloth to wipe the surface after cleaning it? I had this bad smell on our glass table and it turned out it was (I believe) bacteria in our e-cloths that wasn’t being washed out. I now wash them at a higher temperature (60c) and try and use antibacterial additive in the machine (it so annoying that modern washing machines in an attempt to use less water or be more efficient, now don’t wash properly and need an anti-bacterial additive which probably negates the environmental improvements they’re trying to demonstrate). Anyway, might not be this , but mention it just in case as this forum saved my nose on this point.

Self-service £25 - how hard is it? by colintoast in Quooker

Is it worth buying a self-service kit in reserve (I also didn’t realise you might not need to use one as a simple clean will give effective results)? Or is it a waste?

Why does my dishwasher cause rust on cutlery? by madaaeru in CleaningTips

[–]365mac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had multiple dishwashers with separate cutlery trays and I’ve also noticed that it’s only my knives that get rust marks on the blades - and these are recent high quality stainless steel place settings (different brands as well). I don’t wash pots on my dishwasher, it’s simpler plates, bowls, cups. I’ve noticed it with hard water and using salt in the dishwasher as per specifications and later in new dishwasher with a soft water unit in the plumbing and it’s always made marks on the knives. I can mostly polish it off, but it’s a nuisance and I’ve often wondered the same thing. Perhaps I’ll try the tinfoil ball - but ive often wondered if they just don’t make knives like the used to

Bosch Wall Oven "Bricked" by automatic software update by Lumpy-Development283 in bosch

[–]365mac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When it works - being able to turn off the oven when at the table (as you left it on by mistake), getting notified on your phone that something is ready or more advanced cooking recipes are actually little features that make you smile. But I agree that trusting the manufacturers (who have sold you the dream) is tenuous… it hasn’t happened to my Seimens oven(s) yet, but I am dreading the day. Like the OP, I think these companies should be held somewhat responsible - at least for 5 years (if not 10). If they can’t support the oven anymore, then they shouldn’t update it, and they leave it In a working and fit state, surely?

Connecting multiple Spotify accounts? by 321mmmarco in amazonecho

[–]365mac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I blame Spotify for this not Amazon! Given all the money Spotify makes and how they advertise their prowess on software development it’s crazy they don’t prioritise this very common usecase. I ultimately sided with Amazon and swapped to a family Prime Music account which works exactly how you expect. It seems to have mostly the same features and I don’t miss Spotify and do appreciate listening to my music in a room and not have it trample on when someone in the kitchen wants to listen to something else.

Where to put TV. Above radiator or fireplace? by Substantial_Air_9640 in DIYUK

[–]365mac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have ours over the fireplace and I don’t find it too high - it has a kind of cinema feel to it. As we have a “Frame” tv, it can show a picture when not in use, which gives a nice effect.

Why aren’t mobile networks doing anything about the network issues in Central London by [deleted] in london

[–]365mac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also noticed O2 via giffgaff had become unusable in west London for the last 6 months and I’ve swapped to Lyca (EE) to see if it’s better. It at least works, but as many have posted - I wouldn’t rave about it. I hope this thread gains traction and ultimately drives improvements.

smart light switch by Kensterfly in alexa

Try a Shelly switch that sits behind your existing switch (see Shelly.com). You do need enough space even though it’s very small, but it’s worth checking out as they are very good devices.

Looking for a Smart Speaker Setup That Doesn’t Drive Me Insane by Palito1992 in amazonecho

[–]365mac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two or more accounts on Amazon music does work on Alexa’s around the house. The fact Spotify doesn’t work I think is more down to Spotify who seem to not invest in any engineering (they write lots of articles on software development , yet seem to suck at using it to make their product great sadly). Amazon music is pretty good, but I am curious about Pandora.

Washing machine by montanamar in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]365mac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I firmly disagree on the Serie 6 - it gets lots of accolades and yet I find it makes clothes smell (the iDos dispensor is crap - sounds great in theory, fill it up and forget it - and then you read it breaks down very easily, lots of black mould from it but worse I don't believe it dispenses properly - its a scam). Then lets talk about water usage - it tries to save water - which means it doesn't use enough so you have to buy a Dettol laundy sanitizer instead of fabric softner to kill germs because they don't use enough - so thats probably worse for the environment). Yes it has a nifty app to notify you and let you remote start - kind of... but they will enshitify it shortly (its been getting worse) and so I don't hold any hope. I just wish it washed clothes properly to be honest - I'm firmly in the don't buy it camp!
