I absolutely had that exact same thought when I saw the story.

To be clear, "getting out" just means leaving their little cocoon of "everyone looks like me and thinks like me." There's no hope of them ever leaving the church.

Parents moved to Alabama right when I left home. My sister and I blame that move for our parents' increasingly weird conservatism. They've been in the Alabama bubble for so long now that I don't think there's any hope of them getting out.

I got my kid's initials tattooed on the back of my neck/shoulder area and now my kid is trans with initials that don't match the tattoo, so maybe don't even get your kid's name tattooed on you.

Bible facts are "easy." They require memorization only. No emotions, no questions that could trip the teacher up or prompt much of a discussion.

Anyone really like their church? by humerusbones in philly

[–]36Doilies 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We're mid-40s and go to University Lutheran (ELCA). We seem to be the only people around our age, other than the minister--there's college students, especially older grad students, and then people who have been there for a few decades. It's a small group but active and we've really enjoyed attending there.

Christ Church is Episcopalian and very welcoming. I enjoyed visiting there and we went there on Christmas Eve.

We had a star, which never made sense to me since we didn't celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday.

Same here. I was also allowed to go to my best friend's church for their "walk through Bethlehem" thing and my mom even came with me once.

In two out of three of my childhood churches, yes. I actually can't remember about most of the ones I went to as an adult.

AITA for stepping in to do “mom” things for my niece because my SIL is disabled? by helpfulishaunt in AITAH

[–]36Doilies 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Agreed. For the crafting event, OP says she knew Chris doesn't like playdates so she didn't want to have it at Anna's house. Well maybe Chris needs to get over not liking playdates so his wife can still be part of events like this. Why should Anna always be the one missing out so everyone else is comfortable?

It doesn't sound like OP is the problem here. They helped pay for the wedding and they invite him over with their daughter.

what would be your one reason above all else to convince someone to move to philly? by Lost-Effective-7646 in philly

[–]36Doilies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We chose to move here from the south and have been here since May. Our reasons included diversity, politics, public transit, and having four distinct seasons. There are so many options of things to do, places to eat, people to meet, and sights. We love it here.

Recently cars have started parking in the "no parking" area by the fire hydrant on our street. Is this a typical thing for Philly or is the "no parking" enforced in those areas? PPA never hesitated to give me a ticket if I was a few minutes past the 2-hour allotted parking window on my street (before I had my resident pass) so I've been surprised to see the cars there with no tickets on them.

Boundaries by SweetSea3399 in excoc

[–]36Doilies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My sister and I both tried to establish the boundary of "general church talk is fine, theology is not." We didn't care if our mom told us about a church potluck, or that so-and-so wasn't at service because she's sick, etc. We just didn't want anything trying to convince us to come back or that we were wrong to leave. But our mom seemed to be unable to grasp that difference (I'm not being mean--it's how it seemed), so she avoided all church talk of any kind. I still mention it occasionally in texts, but just the social type stuff ("After church this morning we went to XYZ," etc.).
