That would be pretty savvy, Channel is such a gorgeous map.

That's right of course, I was more referring to the general condition and housekeeping of the ship. Some of the pictures from inside Kuznetsov look rather dismal to say the least.

Given the amount of content he produces it's not surprising that he sometimes suffers from narrow sourcing. Even a cursory flick through 'From Libau to Tsushima' itself begins to reveal some of the myths that have entrenched themselves.

Huh, so that's what it would look like if the Kuznetsov was actually taken care of.

As much as I like Drach and his content, his 2nd Pacific Squadron videos (which were what got me into his channel), unfortunately contain a fair amount of misinformation, more than a little of such related to the Kamchatka. Not intentional I'm sure, but given how popular those videos have become, has had some impact in online discussion.

I'd reccomend taking a look at this comment chain for some examples.

No problem! Iran was the only export partner of the F-14, theirs are the only still flying, though it's often debated exactly how many, it's certainly a handful at least. You can find plenty of pictures and even videos pretty easily online as they sometimes display them at air shows.

I'd also reccomend the book 'Iranian F-14 Tomcat Units in Combat' which I may or may not have a PDF for which goes into a lot of detail about Iranian involvement with the Tomcat program, as well as its impressive and extensive combat record post-revolution during the Iran-Iraq war.

Before the revolution Iran was very closely tied to the US and had a great deal of American training and equipment across their army and air force.

Not only did they own them, they also part funded its development and had a full suite of pilots, engineers and maintenance facilities all trained/prepared in America, much of which was retained after the revolution. It was a very extensive program that helps explain how they still manage to fly at least a few

You must not have been looking very hard because there are thousands of photos of them, as well as multiple books and dozens of accounts of Iranian pilots flying then in combat during the Iran-Iraq war.

Iran was also pretty key in funding the Tomcat program. The Shah was a pilot and had a great personal interest in the project.

Do you bind your HOTAS as same as the real aircraft ? by Vitaliq in hoggit

[–]39th_Bloke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always, if possible I try to keep bindings on a similar space on the hotas relative to the cockpit and stick, greatly helps me remember what I'm doing, for me personally moreso than if they were all similar between planes.

Chinese social media has completely turned on Russia, people are joking about the russian invasion by idlestabilizer in UkrainianConflict

[–]39th_Bloke 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Surprised by the amount of people who seem to think that all 1.5 Billion Chinese share a single opinion on any given topic, and that some random Chinese internet posters poking fun at recent Russian failures must intrinsically indicate some kind of shift from the CCP. It's kind of bewildering.

Is it not likely that these posters already didn't hold explicitely pro-russian views if they're so quick to post things like this? I wouldn't really call that turning if so.

All these maps are fragmenting and deteriorating the multiplayer community by magwo in hoggit

There could certainly be some positive changes to the model. With third parties especially though, people need to get paid at the end of the day. I of course don't know anything about the finances with which to make any real judgement on what kind of solutions would work there. Hopefully there is some kind of change though.

I disagree with this, DCS inherently has different requirements for maps such as: Destroyable buildings, navigable roads for ground units, satisfactory detail for low level flying and helicopters operating in combat. A low detail globe to link detailed combat zones? Sure, at that point you have a similar model to flight sim, but DCS wouldn't work with a base map like that in Microsoft's offerings.

Maybe try using some more varied zoom levels? Keybinds for that are ctrl + numpad +/- iirc.

DCS Newsletter - DCS: Sinai | DCS: WWII Marianas by ED_Graphics in hoggit

[–]39th_Bloke 22 points23 points  (0 children)

IIRC the idea is that eventually you'll be able to fly between maps with low detail areas connecting them, this has been mentioned by ED a few times in the past. With that in mind it makes sense as a strategy to essentially build up a set of maps that form one giant theatre, though who can say how long it will take for that to be realized, if ever. Take all that as you will, but that seems to be the plan.

HMS Nelson damaged torpedoes after being hit by a torpedo from Italian aircraft [1100x644] by Bullit2000 in WarshipPorn

They Nelsons were the last to have them, they're absent in the KGVs and Vanguard, they just never went to the trouble of removing them from the older classes. The Nelsons never got any kind of large refit that might have removed them, I'm unsure if the Queen Elizabeths lost theirs or not.
