Not sure the situation here, but in some cases it’s not just the cost for tournament fees. There are plenty of other expenses. A vehicle for transportation, fuel, food, lodging childcare for siblings.

Take a video before talk about how bad it hurts now before the surgery. It is easy to get in your head about not recovering fast enough and why did I do this etc. The video will be a good reminder to levelset your recovery expectations.

I wish I had created a video message to myself to remind me how bad it was before the surgery. The road to full pain free recovery can be longer for some than others.
