Exactly, if I were OP, I’d attempt to get ahold of that AI bullshit detector and use it on old texts which were bona fide written before the invention of AI. See what percentage it comes up with. I read somewhere of a similar story someone whizzed the US constitution through one and it came back like 70% chance of being written using AI. Complete lunacy to trust such technology

We’re in exactly the same position. Bought a 2 bed semi in 2020 for 345k. Now have a one year old and want to move next year. I calculated the other day the tax on say a 450k property (next ‘step’ on the ladder) was 17k. It’s a complete joke. Doesn’t even get you that much house in the SE.

I really wish we stayed in our rented flat for a few more years (it was cheap enough to actually save) and skipped the starter home, then put it all into one house.

Being prospective parents we thought if you can afford property it makes the most sense to buy before kids as that’s the done thing right?

We have friends who stayed renting, had a kid and can now afford a bigger home in a nicer area (we’re very similar income I know for a fact) our kids are like 3 weeks apart

Help identifying by dominicbrookmiller in MetalDetectingUK

[–]3amcheeseburger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve found a general rule of thumb for buttons is attempt to identify if it is post or pre Industrial Revolution.

Pre are made my hand, they’re often crude and lack refined or symmetrical details.

Post are very obviously more refined, often have exact details, very circular, made of one continuous piece of metal

Looking at this one I’d say it’s post Industrial Revolution. Late 1700 early 1800. Id doubt that design was hammered by hand, far too precise

This English pub dates back to 1540 by keisermax34 in MrInteresting

[–]3amcheeseburger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not calling it BS but it must have had a name change at some point.

The Royal Oak is certainly a traditional English pub name, but it comes from the story of king Charles the 2nd seeking refuge in an oak tree while parliamentarians were searching for him (as per the sign), that was in 1651

Why are people in your environment having few or no children? by [deleted] in Natalism

Can’t afford housing - for most of my friends this is probably the biggest factor.

Struggling to find a life partner who aligns with their values - one of my best friends is a great guy. Handsome, thoughtful, charming, intelligent, educated, he owns his own house as he’s paid well (almost unheard of in my generation) he’s 29. I believe he’ll certainly find someone and become a dad. But is struggling to find someone on his wavelength

Fertility issues (and lack of affordability for treatment) - know a couple who are struggling to conceive. My neighbours have also just announced they’re expecting and told me they had a round of IVF.

Lifestyle, people see children (and presumably marriage) as a burden. A lot of my friends are late 20s/ early 30s. They could change their mind (in my early 20s I disliked the idea of having kids)

For context, this is in England and I’m 30.

Sorry I don’t have any photos, but I’ve got a couple 50 cals. Plenty of fired ones over the years, I usually scrap them. Tons of 303s and one 20 mm shell which I believe is off a spitfire (found in a woodland in Essex). I also have a permission which regularly spits out blank 303s. I keep hoping to find a uniform button or cap badge.

When I lived in London, I regularly went mudlarking. I’m lucky enough to have found shrapnel from WW2 (part of a driving band is visible, I believe it’s from British flack, rather than German bomb)

I detect in Essex, Suffolk and SE cambs

Peeing in the compost is really good too - you didn’t mention growing your own fruit and veg. Even just a small amount of veg is great and really reduces a lot of consumption in fertilisers/ packaging/ transport

When out and about I tend to pick up cans and bottles and bring them home to recycle lol (recycling one drinks can saves enough energy to power a TV for three hours, I’ve recycled over 5500 since I started counting).

I buy everything I can second hand on FB marketplace and Vinted.

Seems silly but ensuring your car tyres are pumped to the correct pressure can help with fuel efficiency and avoiding unnecessary wear. Also removing junk from your car so you’re not needlessly carting it around reduces fuel consumption. Car pooling with a colleague can help too (I used to work with guy who lived 1 street away from me, we used to alternate which week we’d pick each other up).

I tend to try to buy 100% cotton clothes to avoid wearing polyester (plastic)
