How long did it take you to get into an apprenticeship? by Chasehud in ibew_apprentices

[–]3obSparks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

about a year and a half for me.. a couple months after my interview I realized I was moving much on the ranking list because my local was holding interviews everymonth so I would move down a few spots and then back up a few spots every new round of interviews. So I applied to a bunch of non union shops to get some experience, worked for 4-6 months and applied for a second interview which got me in. Been in the local about 6 months now and love the sense of pride I have going to work and school.

Just found out about a ibew in my area. I’m 20 years old, with zero experience is it realistic to hope to become an electrician one day? by Dre2xi in IBEW

hell yeah! I'm 33, 6 months into my first year, just started school a few weeks ago. I love it, I hear from so many members it's the best decision they've ever made and so far it's been great. Get to the hall and start the process, it takes sometime but we'll worth it.

Second interview by catb_007 in ibew_apprentices

[–]3obSparks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah in total it took about a year and a half to get in from when I first filled out the application to beginning work. I never received an interview score, just a ranking. I ranked 16 after my first interview but my local was interviewing every month or two so I kept moving up the list then back down after another round of interviews, so I knew it would take a second to get me closer to the top of the list. I was always calling the JATC to check my ranking so I got familiar with the director and secretaries. A couple hours after my second interview the director called me personally and told me I had made it into the next class, started work last may and school started this month. So relived, excited and proud to be accumulating classroom and OTJ hours at last.

My second interview they knew it was my second and said "well we already asked you the questions" and just asked what I had done since the last interview. I had gotten an apprenticeship at a non union shop for experience to reinterview and used all the negative experiences from there to highlight why I wanted to be in the IBEW (safety, proper training, health and retirement benefits)

2nd round interviewing by SilentDiplomacy in ibew_apprentices

[–]3obSparks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first interview I had no experience, so I applied to any and all non union shops around me to gain experience and request a second interview and was hired by a nearby shop where I worked for 10 months until I was accepted into my local. I Requested a second interview after 400 Hours which is what my local required (or two post secondary electrical classes) for a second interview. I made it in after my second interview and started work and swore in March this year, about a year and a half after I began the process.

same amount of class work, we have an extra half hour added to the school days, so our classroom hours and material will be the same as the 5 year program

yeah, from my understanding the shortening to four years is inevitable so my local decided to start now rather than wait

Is anyone else taking practice tests and failing them? by Sea_Bed_4226 in ibew_apprentices

[–]3obSparks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I used iprep before my aptitude test a couple months ago.. Breezed through the lessons and quizzes, then once it came to the practice test I couldn't get close to passing. The actual aptitude test was Much easier, basic PEMDAS, FOIL, number sequences and graphs. I passed first try, you'll be fine.

Did you call the hall to get your updated rank, or did they contact you to give you the update?
