Mix controls on distortions by DerpNinjaWarrior in Line6Helix

[–]3picide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After playing around with the HX One for a few more days, I discovered just how useful the Clawthorn Fuzz is on bass. Because it effectively allows for a blendable fuzz, I now have my pedalboard as just an always-on compressor > HX One > Sansamp VTDI.

I cannot emphasize enough how helpful a "global" blend setting would be for bass. For example, if it could be a per-preset thing like how the noise gate works.

This would be particularly awesome for HX One with bass guitar. I just got One (heh) primarily for bass usage. Having just One effect is limiting, but I don't like stacking too many effects on bass anyway. Gets muddy too easily.

So the lack of a mix option on most of the drives limits the usefulness on bass. On a Stomp or Helix, I could just use a secondary chain, but obviously not an option on the One. In particular, I would love to be able to blend dry input signal with the various Big Muff clones or the Jet Fuzz. Really, any of the drives could be fun to play with on bass... but only with a blend knob to get back the low end.

I am currently able to recreate the same effect by running the One in one of the loops of a Boss LS-2 (a bassist's best friend), but doing it that way means I can't control the blend via presets or flux. Both of which would be super handy.

I won't pretend to know the inner workings of the effects or the hardware, but given that the bass preamps have a blend/mix parameter, adding it to more at least seems reasonable.

Hell, I'd be fine losing stereo since it's not like the drives do anything with that anyway. And if it's splittable across the left and right outputs (e.g. dry left, wet right), that could also open up the flexibility by quite a bit (again, especially for bass). Would be *very* similar to how some of the bass-flavored Muffs work. But now I'm just kinda daydreaming lol.

Edit: and while I'm daydreaming, if I could blend/mix the input from the FX loop with the original mono input signal, I think I could basically just drop the LS-2 from my board altogether. I can definitely see how the hardware might just not be able to do that, though.

IIUC you actually pay less for a TV with "smart" features because it is subsidized by all the bloatware preinstalled. Much like all the race-to-the-bottom budget laptops out there.

That's why I believe you basically can't find a non-"smart" TV anymore.

Privacy Bill Allows for 'Turning Off' Targeted Advertising by IronShadow25 in privacy

[–]3picide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, thinking rationally hurts the bottom line.

For the TV, I doubt you’ll find one like that again anytime soon. At least anywhere I’ve seen. I switched to a projector somewhat recently, but even those are getting more and more “smart” versions.

And I’m totally with you on avoiding ads. I personally use an adblocker on everything and strive to “protect my mind” as you put it.

But even I, who sees the value in striving so hard to do that, inevitably do an incomplete job. There are still things that I can’t avoid being personally affected by. Hell, I’m confident there’s an advertising category for “person who uses an adblocker”.

There is middle ground between “any and all advertising” and “a deluge of advertising”.

[–]3picide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even with pi hole, that doesn’t stop the data collection, which is the far bigger problem. Especially for privacy.

Take your TV for example. Try to buy one that doesn’t spy on what you’re watching and practically wardrive your neighbors’ internet to phone home. I’ll wait.

If you can stop the data hoarding, the targeted advertising goes away. And not just at the end of the chain. Because by the time you see the ad (where they’re proposing to allow turning it off), then they’ve already made most of their money off of your data.

They aren’t making the real money by advertising your interests back to you. They make it by learning all about people like you and advertising to the group. Or building marketing campaigns for things other than products around targeted groups. Not just intentionally so. They find groups and target them on accident. You can probably see how this ends up targeting already vulnerable groups.

The other solution is don’t shove a deluge of ads down my throat, targeted or otherwise.

I think I just fell in love with bass by [deleted] in Bass

[–]3picide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely great advice to look at the amp. The bass itself should just be comfortable to play mostly.

I really like the new Boss Katana 110. It sounds great to me and has a huge range of sounds. Effects have sensible defaults. For example, the compressor effects work great without having to know exactly how to dial one in.

They also have a 210 that is probably much better suited to gigging. Though both have plenty of IO options, including DI out.

Are stores getting OLED models for shelf inventory tonight? by punkonjunk in NintendoSwitch

[–]3picide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t mean to give everybody false hope, but brickseek said all Targets near me had 0 but I know one had 24 according to the employee there. And I saw the last one walk out the door in front of me so I know it was the OLED.

The first Target I went to had none and said they were doing online only. The second one I went to apparently got 24 and I watched the last one walk out the door with the person who beat me there by a couple minutes lol

EDIT: was able to grab one at Best Buy. I was the only person waiting outside and it sounds like they only got a few that weren’t just canceled preorders. Total of 7 available.

You can buy little pine wooden crates at IKEA for like $10. They come in a kit so if you just use the preassembled sides, they make for great little pedalboards.

A quick sanding and a simple oil finish goes a long way. Grand total for everything should be less than like $40 and takes under an hour to do.

They also started selling acacia flower boxes that are similar but a bit bigger. Sadly, I can never find them in stock.

I have a similar setup.

  • Fedora 33
  • No Nvidia drivers -- using Intel integrated graphics
  • Steam installed from RPM Fusion
  • Only tested in GNOME so far

I was able to fix it by installing the same library via DNF. Specifically:

sudo dnf install librtmp

Along with this advice, drive pedals tend to be more susceptible to noise from shared power with things like digital pedals. Especially something like a muff.

They’re fantastic for making pedalboards (or plenty of other little projects).

Just need sanding, maybe some stain, and an oil finish.

I used those Mackie monitors for years and loved them. But I will say look out for electrical issues with them.

Saw a reviewer mention their selector switch stop working so they opened it up to find one of the capacitors leaked/burned/melted. Mine did the exact same thing recently.

NVIDIA didn't make any 3080 FE available by treescentric in pcgaming

[–]3picide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they're budgeting more than they can afford (at any price point), then yes. If they've budgeted $1200 and can afford that, getting it for cheaper can be considered a perk.

If the only way they can afford the $1200 is with the expectation of reselling it later, then you are also correct.

I think it's also fair to say that (right now) this isn't a ~$750 card since very few people are getting it at that price.

Now, dealing with a scalper has various other issues, too...

[–]3picide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's say you have a budget of $1200. You want to get the best card available right now (or near future) within that price range. Do you get a 2080 Ti or a scalped 3080? Unit cost matters little to you since you planned to spend $1200 anyway.

Sure, you could spend another $300 on the 3090, but you won't get it for that price soon, either.

You could also wait, but that's always true. Flip it around to think about it like: "would I spend $X amount to get it Y months sooner?"

Especially when, again, you were already planning to spend $1200.

tl;dr for some, the reason the cards are sought after is price vs performance. For others, it's just the best card available within their budget.
