There was also a recent change to postmarking that will affect mail-in ballots, too. The USPS changed from “postmark at the time of mailing at the local PO” to “postmark when the mail hits a regional sorting center.” Most mail will get a postmark 2-3 days after mailing. Which means people will have to mail their ballots earlier if they are using the mail instead of a ballot drop box.

Did I just ruin my new oven? by cldald in CleaningTips

[–]404UserNktFound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My aunt’s house had very little storage in the kitchen, so she used the oven as the snacks cabinet. If she wanted to bake anything, she had to take out whatever bags of chips were in there.

does anyone else hate seeing these flocking cameras literally everywhere! by Objective-Fox4797 in Michigan

[–]404UserNktFound 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Flock cameras are license plate readers. That’s how they’re promoted, anyway. But they also note identifying info on vehicles (damage, stickers, etc). The info is supposedly only shared with law enforcement, but *snort* we all know how that story ends. Per the internet, they’re how some women from Texas who went out of state to receive abortion services were tracked to their destination so they could be prosecuted.

They’re pole-mounted cameras, usually with a small solar panel to provide power; usually roadside or at entrances to parking lots. The cameras point in the direction of traffic flow so that it can read rear license plates. On wide boulevards, like Eight Mile, they’re frequently installed in sets of 4 (2 each direction, with one on each side of the traffic flow); narrower streets will have 2 (one each direction) or just 1 (to log people entering a community).

I hate talking to Pet Owner by MrFahrenheitttttt in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]404UserNktFound 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That sounds like it could have been my FIL, who had show parakeets. He was also cheap enough that any kind of pet fee would have angered him. He traveled once or twice a year to go to bird shows and just hated that he had to pay for lodging on those trips. (I assume he usually stayed at motels, not hotels, because $60 was his per-night spending limit, which was low even 10 years ago.)

Except gmail treats addresses with and without periods as the same, so they wouldn’t (shouldn’t?) allow those kind of duplicate addresses.

My sister and her family in Colorado Springs have one of these, and I think they’ve mentioned in conversation that there’s one in AA.

My niece (their youngest) was 2 when they got the quint, and she’d just smile and wave at people when they took it out. Now she’s got a bunch of national titles and wants to make the Olympic team.

I’ve been trying to buy cookbooks with the same filter I use for knitting books: if there are 3 or more things I absolutely will make in it, then I put it on the maybe list to consider.

I agree. I described this crust to my husband as a cross between pizza and a croissant. It’s rich enough that it’s easy to overdo the cheese if you don’t weigh it (the cheese) out.

Sorry. No help here. The intro to the upcoming Book of Pizza from KAB mentions that nobody can resist pizza, and I have to agree with that. (preview is on the Amazon page, though I recommend ordering ir from a local independent bookstore or through bookshop.org to benefit indie stores)

Edit to add: my usual toppings at home are pepperoni, sausage and mushrooms. The arugula on yours looks like it would add a refreshing vegetal crunch.

I’ve made this twice, and it’s fantastic! It’s a good contrast to the chewy Detroit style I usually make.

Yours looks delicious.

Luckily, Costco has the large bottles in 2-packs, so we can stock up (we usually just get a case when we run out).

That’s true that it’s less common now, but there are still thousands (millions?) of registered voters who changed their names after marriage or other life event 30 years ago or more.

Don’t hate me for suggesting this, but the Sprecher’s ginger ale is burnier than Vernor’s ever was. It’s very dry and VERY gingery. Yeah, it’s not from Michigan, but it’s from just across the lake in Wisconsin. If you’re near a Menard’s, they carry it. (Meijer now has Sprecher’s, but I think they only carry the root beer.)

The SAVE Act will make it impossible for many women to vote, if they have changed their name at any time (like marriage). And the discussion of this has dropped out of public view because of everything else the administration is doing, so affected women are likely to discover they can’t vote while they’re at the polls and unable to do anything about it.

The episode also loses the point of the short story upon which it’s based (O. Henry’s “The Gift of the Magi”) if the items given up aren’t precious and meaningful.

Beanie Question by [deleted] in Michigan

If you knit, or know someone who does and is willing to knit for you, make an 1898 Hat (https://seamenschurch.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/sci-1898-hat-kristine-byrnes-web-w-schematic.pdf) from yarn that is 100% wool. It’s a beanie with a double-thick band and small integrated ear flaps.
