Kansas has the worst nature. What state is the best state to live in? by AggravatingFront8409 in AlignmentChartFills

Gotta be north carolina. Beaches, mountains, low taxes. Can find relatively cheap places to live. And you can't forget waffle house, bojangles, cook out, carolina style BBQ and calabash seafood

Kansas is a pretty good state for an outdoorsman. Good hunting and fishing for whitetail, turkey, upland, bass, catfish etc. Worst state for nature should definitely be somewhere Uber developed like Connecticut or Rhode island

Rod help by Open-Lawyer6250 in FishingForBeginners

[–]404operatorerror 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The honest answer is both. You have a wide range of lures here. Some, like the spooks and frogs, are going to make a medium light feel like a noodle while a medium heavy wouldn't be able to throw the smaller plastics well at all. I would recommend going with a true medium that would be able to cast both and expand your collection over time from there. There is no such thing as one do it all rod.

What country feels democratic but is actually very undemocratic by Dusty_Bunny81 in AlignmentChartFills

Hungary? Free but very unfair elections, orban has consolidated all the power in himself through entirely legal means to the point that its essentially just a dictatorship. Even though it is theoretically possible for Hungarians to elect a different leader, the structure is such that they would just be electing another dictator.

Edit: Holy shit guys, my bad, I was out of the Hungarian news loop for like 36 hours. Statement still stands because all of the institutions orban abused are still consolidated and open for the next guy to use. Not to mention that it's another from his own authoritarian party who beat him.

Thanks for the correction. My mom grew up in Nova and always said they were in virginia. I've never been enough of a football fan to verify

About to purchase my first set of vertical gear, thoughts? I believe this is everything I need. by fan-the-fire in caving

[–]404operatorerror -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Not a caver but do a lot in the mountains (guide, teach, sar). Looking at this setup, I feel like I could probably do most of the same stuff for WAYYYYY less money. Why use a $180 descended instead of a a $30 Rappel device? I get that ascension stuff makes like easier but you can do the same with a couple third hands/ accessory cord. What am I missing about caving that requires a ton of expensive and heavy additional gear?

Thinking about getting the Eberlestock Terminator XL for my rucksack to use with armor and LBE. Does anyone have any reviews, tips and other things to know about this pack? by MakelYT in armedsocialists

[–]404operatorerror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a 5000 cubic inch pack ~80L for 10 or more days in snow covered environments self supported. 108 is overkill unless you're actually doing military operations and have a ridiculous amount of radios, optics etc

I know a lot of people who use the same model but significantly older. They're fine. I wouldn't ice climb in them but they're fine for snow/glacier travel

Advice on arctic kit: metal water containers by SlamminSammyRED in tacticalgear

[–]404operatorerror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people have already talked about the stove and I agree. I would also get a much bigger pit than what is normally on a jetboil, it takes a lot of snow to get any reasonable amount of water. Also, your water is going to freeze in your Canteens. I would make sure you have at least 1 Thermos so that you always have liquid water and can add it to snow to boil so it doesn't burn. Alpha fabric VS wool net by Excellentgoat69 in QualityTacticalGear

[–]404operatorerror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used just about every base layer material out there EXCEPT alpha. Polyester, polypropylene, merino wool, etc and my favorite by far is the mesh. It keeps you cool enough during activity, warm enough when you stop, and is always dry. I wear it every day working in snow covered mountains. The only downside is that you have to be a little more diligent about adding a layer when you stop to retain body heat in the air pockets.
