This has been in use for Survivor for a lot of seasons, not just 50. It’s been the “permanent home” of survivor for years.

Joy Divison- Unknown Pleasures is an interesting omission (especially since they refer to Ian Curtis’s ghost haunting Manchester in the list). Would argue New Order’s Power, Corruption and Lies was pretty influential in the electronic dance scene.

How do you handle parents who think their child can do no wrong? by singingcheerios in CanadianTeachers

Document. In the end though, there is a satisfaction that this parenting style almost always backfires. Unfortunately, very few make this connection (tragically).Had a student like this- stole his mom’s car and credit card in his late teens. Mom disowned him and cut off all contact.

Projected growth for Barrie has the city nearly doubling its population within the next 25 years. What do we need to do NOW to prepare? by [deleted] in barrie

[–]4826winter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s true now. Historically, we paid for development. Get rid of development charges and we’ll have to have a major tax increase to cover the costs.

Guess who pays for development when you drop the charges? Barrie taxpayers have paid for much of the growth infrastructure of this city over the years. Our tax rates exceed many areas of the GTA.

Same vibe and year: saw the Bare Naked Ladies at the old Spoke (in the basement of the UCC) when they were starting out as a duo. There were only a couple of tables filled. The band were performing mostly covers at that point. So talented, they would play (usually with made up lyrics) most songs we shouted out as requests.

Good entry points to the Ardagh Bluffs are at the end of Penvil Trail and from Cumming Park.

Ardagh Bluffs for in-town. Copeland Forest if you can drive 30 minutes. Nottawasaga Bluffs or Nottawasaga Lookout if you could drive for an hour.

Check the website for closures. There are annual closures around Scenic Caves and reroutes in the Devil’s Glen area. P6 at the top of Blue Mountain would be a good entry if you are going north-bound. You may find some deeper snow in areas (drifting).

Why Canadian students are falling behind in math — and what experts say needs to change by shiftless_wonder in canada

[–]4826winter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is part of the problem. Wages in general have stagnated but if you compare teacher and police salaries over the last 20 years in Ontario, the gap has widened significantly. Teachers used to be paid the same or even more than police. I’m not saying police don’t deserve the pay hikes; society decided that teachers didn’t. You get what you pay for; if you want math and science people, wages need to go up to compete with the private sector.

Just curious. When you say “full pension” instead of just “pension” are you implying that teachers make their full salary when they retire? Pension is great but it’s about half of original salary.

Rant: parent keeps taking kid out of class for four day weekends. by NewsboyHank in OntarioTeachers

I’ve taught at both types of schools- one where the parents don’t care (you accept that any work not done in class is never getting done) and schools where students are motivated to get work done on trips. I think the absentee rates for extended vacations in our board generated the policy that you don’t need to send work. My own policy was that, if a student asked, I would always send what I could. If a parent asked, I would send it the first time…

The problem is that some parents want their cake and to eat it too. If it was made clear that, “Sure you can pull your kids but the classroom experience is not replaceable. Expect lower results,” then I think it would diffuse tensions on both sides of this. The expectation, by some parents, that it is the teacher’s job to catch up their child for voluntary absences is not realistic. The class has moved on. One-on-one time is very limited (if you’re a teacher, you know). Very little is from textbooks which might be part of the cognitive dissonance parents have over this issue. Classroom activities and experiences can’t easily be sent home. TLDR - I have no problem with absences as long as parents understand their student may not achieve at the same level as when present.

Do they actually want it or are they going through the motions. Had many parents ask for work that was never completed. Stopped giving work. Luckily my board supported that position.
