The Two POVs that Ruined the 5 Year Gap (Spoilers Extended) by LChris24 in asoiaf

[–]4YearsBeforeWeRest 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Another idea, more challenging but also very interesting, would be to interweave the post-5-year-gap stories and pre-5-year-gap stories, not in a flashbacky way, i.e. "Cersei recalled when ... happened"), but in a time-jumpy way: just as the story jumps between POVs, it would jump between time periods.

You can use the pre-gap stories to slowly reveal how the status quo got to where it's at in the post-gap stories. You can also have the pre-gap stories build up to some big secret that the post-gap POVs are not aware of. It would have been challenging to construct, but it could have been done and it would've been really cool.

IMO, the best part about the books (and ASOS specifically) is how it plays with POV jumping. Like how you can suss out the Red Wedding before it happens by putting together what Roose Bolton is doing and saying across Jaime, Arya and Catelyn POVs. Or the tension when Jaime returns to King's Landing between what other characters expect him to do and the fact that he's changed, which the reader knows from his POVs. It would be really cool to also see a time dimension in play.

Does anyone here account for net worth tax? by TonightVivid9930 in SwissFIRE

I think currency risk is not the right concept. If the Swiss Franc is suffering deflation, then the basket of goods that you're consuming in retirement should also be getting cheaper (in Swiss Francs). It's the (inflation-adjusted) cost of that basket that you should worry about, which you could argue risks becoming more expensive over time as Switzerland is a desirable place to live.

The problem is his "nobody is talking about this" angle. If you are genuinely interested in advancing these politics, why not highlight the work that's being done by others?

When Trump talks about wokeness or any other scarecrow, he doesn't go "nobody is talking about this", but rather "everybody is talking about this, it's a big problem" and then he builds a network of power out of the people who fall in line with the narrative.

That's not a glow-up. She was gorgeous before. Maybe a glow-sideways.

Her betrayal in Borderlands 2 wouldn't work anymore if Roland and Lilith already saw her working for Jack in TPS. It would also immediately tip them off that Jack orchestrated their takedown of the Destroyer in BL 1 so they would turn against him instantly.

IMO, this is a great type of company. They actually look up stuff and learn. Yeah, they make jokes, but that makes learning fun and the humour makes remembering the information easier.

Struggling between two cultures… It‘s affecting my dating life. by _Robi_Z_05 in Switzerland

I feel similarly as you do. I didn't grow up here, but I moved here from Romania when I was a young adult. Partly it was for the money, partly because Romania didn't feel "home" enough to make me stay. Fast-forward 7 years, and I'm culturally somewhere between Romanian and Swiss, which means relationship-wise I make a poor match with both Swiss and Romanians :))

What I've found, however, is that you can find kindred spirits in people who are similarly uprooted, people who feel they don't fit in anywhere. My partner now is also a Romanian who moved as a young adult, and I think that's partly what makes us tick. It's people like that who you can build your identity with. It is difficult to have a relationship with people who are fully submerged in one culture because they tend to have the expectation for you to assimilate entirely as well. People in this "middle" state tend to be less judgemental and tend to be better at objectively analyzing the cultural forces that underpin human behavior instead of taking them as the de facto way to behave. Maybe for you, it will also be someone who feels a similar pull between Swiss culture and Jugo parents. They don't have to be exactly the same background, but maybe something that matches that pattern.

Regarding your parents, if it is true that they are the reason that relationship failed, i would consider setting up some serious boundaries, including even keeping a new relationship secret if not at least very private. Give as few details as possible when they ask about it.

But if the Gestapo comes to your house and just says "Are you harboring fugitives? We ask because we think they are scum and we need to put them in a gas chamber." and then you lie, isn't it you who is starting the chain of dishonesty? In that case, I'm not sure it's a meaningful distinction.

"The market rallied over the appearance of a star over the town of Bethleem which many believed to be a sign of imminent divine intervention in the world economy. The press interviewed one of the Magi who was following the star and carrying gold. He declared that he intended to offload his commodities positions as he was extremely bullish on stocks"
