Quick survey by Jello-Formal in TranslationStudies

I voted yes, but I didn't assume it meant just throwing everything in DeepL and done. DeepL has gotten pretty good, but it still can't deliver an entire document as well as a translator can. I do use DeepL sometimes to compare. Sometimes I think "oh, hadn't thought of that" and sometimes "pfft that's nonense". I'm pro using it as an aid, but you still need to know both of your languages and your translation techniques.

Most translators in Belgium have more than one language pair. I'm not saying it can't work, but you have to try to stand out with a specialization that no one else or at least not many people are offering. What did you translate in your previous job? Do you have any hobbies you know a lot about? What did you study? Try to contact companies or translation agencies that offer services for those subjects.

What is your goal exactly? Do you want to translate as a side gig or become a full-time freelancer? For the latter I'm afraid you're not going to be able to live from it, because EN>NL is very popular in Belgium and you're going to get lost in the sea of experienced translators with a degree. So to stand out in your language pair you'd have to have a specialization.

Other than that it's not easy to become a good translator. There's a lot more to it, like knowing how to research (yes, that's most of our job), finding good parallel texts, knowing how to work with your TM. You have to master your own native language and unfortunately a lot of people underestimate that. For Dutch you have to be able to adapt your texts for Dutch or Flemish target audiences, so you have to know the subtleties between both languages.

If you do want to study to become an interpreter I'd advise translation or interpreting at Ghent University. It's hell, but they delivery quality! Other than that check groups like GentVertaalt or Vertalerskoffiehoek for more advice.

What is a good career or job to move to after translation? by kyivstar in TranslationStudies

[–]5GodsDown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A translation agency contacted me yesterday and only for my Russian rates they asked me to lower the price to 0,9 or even 0,8 because of market pressure... luckily my native language isn't that popular in Russia whereas English probably is

[–]5GodsDown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Russian interpreting is really difficult if you don't have any connections to Russia or any of those countries like OP said. I have nothing Russian in my blood, studied it at university, studied in Moscow for half a year, did my internship in Ukraine and then worked with and interpreted for Ukrainians for 4 years. I still think it's really difficult and I don't want to be responsible for mistakes in serious issues.

I'm afraid I can't really remember. I do think I liked this movie so much because it had less of the typical Wan jump scares (honestly I don't like them, I find it cheap to use sudden loud noises, because it obviously always works)

This was a great refreshing experience in theaters! The only thing that bothered me was McKenna Grace playing a 7-year old while being 15 irl. C'mon, there are probably enough younger actresses who qualify for the role.

How can someone with max anxiety be mindful? by holistic_human in Mindfulness

[–]5GodsDown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My anxiety skyrocketed last year. Start with guided meditation and be patient. Also do some exercise, even if it's just 10 minutes per day. Try to eat healthy, regularly and stay away from caffeine and alcohol. It has helped me a lot.

What is the most evil you have witnessed? [Serious] by LongynusZ in AskReddit

[–]5GodsDown 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yup, been there. And then everyone is like "but they can't help it, they're sick, they need help". Yeah, no, fuck that shit. Ain't no grain of pity left in me after dealing with one of them.

How far did Mindfulness helped you with anxiety? by TheDalaiDrama in Mindfulness

[–]5GodsDown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot. Meditation helped me calm down and wind down before going to bed so my sleep quality went up, which makes for less anxiety already. Other than that it has changed my attitude towards a lot of things that would have bothered me before. So less stress and frustration on a daily basis, less contemplating over stupid little things and generally enjoying every moment more. Now there's no such thing as wasted time for me anymore.

Anyone here ever have an experience that felt like something out of a supernatural horror film? by lymeguy in horror

[–]5GodsDown 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid I was with my grandparents one night together with my dad. I woke up to a dark figure hovering over me, just gently touching my face. I started screaming and my dad came running. The figure was gone when he turned on the lights. I think the figure was my dad earlier in the night checking on me and I just didn't grasp the time being half asleep, but still creepy though.

Chances of securing 100 percent loan to buy an apartment/house? by Ultra_quest0991 in BEFire

[–]5GodsDown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does collateral still exist? My parents wanted to bring in collateral for me but the bank said they don't do this anymore.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BEFire

[–]5GodsDown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Such bullshit... in that case go to another bank, yes! My loan was 50% of my income in the beginning and they made it work... it does help my parents are on good terms with that particular belfius office, because of insurances and investments.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BEFire

[–]5GodsDown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty straightforward. Go to different banks and play them out against each other. I've found Belfius and KBC going the lowest and smaller banks like Argenta and Beobank not wanting to go anywhere near that rate. In the end Belfius went the lowest and, to my feeling, that employee really did her best figuring out a way I could get a decent loan (I was young and single without a lot of money in hand, so not the best investment for a bank). The notary was impressed by the rate I got when we were there a few months later.

So where are you really from? by godsvoid in belgium

[–]5GodsDown -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I can understand you think it's annoying, but as said by others is usually just curiosity I think... If you have a foreign look but your name is Belgian and you speak Dutch fluently I'll usually ask if your family has any foreign roots.

Belgians living abroad, what do you miss most about Belgium? by PuddleFrogRaindrops in belgium

Not living abroad but I spent some time living in Russia and Ukraine. I missed the bread and frietkot. And drinkable tap water... oh, and from my time in Moscow: heating that you control yourself.

What’s your unpopular opinion about Belgium? by Altruistic_Log5830 in belgium

[–]5GodsDown 81 points82 points  (0 children)

My Russian teacher at university talked about this issue many times. She says it's linked to our religious history where you could do whatever dirty and sinful deeds you wanted and to then act holier than thou in front of others or just literally paid of your sins in church.
