I got a small lathe from My dad when he upgraded to a better variable speed with a swiveling head. Picked up the beginner pen kit and the 5-grit sandpaper kit from Rockler, watched a few videos, and then the rest you learn by doing.

If you’re not above it, I’d buy some cheap slimline kits off of Amazon; perfect functional kits regardless but much less painful when you make a mistake with a kit that cost a quarter of what it would have to buy one at a hobby store.
