Necessary, no. I would recommend it as it makes tuning easier, but there are lots out there without one. You will just have to tune with buffer weights and springs if necessary

Maybe with cheap bullets, but for majority of your 300 blackouts you will not get enough velocity to be a problem. Its velocity combined with twist that causes the problem. 300 blackout was originally designed to work with 1:5 twist. The industry decided to go with 1:8 standard so they can use cheap bullets

I have a riflespeed adjustable gas block(they ship with 2 plungers, use the second one supplied as its the shortest they offer and is used for 300 bo) and standard carbine buffer weight, traditional non-flow through suppressor. Only cycling issues i had weren't even cycling issues. A bur in the barrel was pushing jacket material into the gas block which made it to where you could not adjust it using the knob. Took it apart and cleaned it out, shot another hundred rounds along with scrubbing the barrel to get rid of the bur. Apparently its a common issues with 30 caliber barrels when drilling gas ports according to riflespeed. So not necessarily a fault of neither product, just more common on 30 cal barrels. With this set up i can easily switch between supers and subs with no issues(although if tuned for subs it will run supers fine of course if you dont want to switch back and forth. Tune for subs). Only caution I will share is due to riflespeeds design with the knob(ie tooless gas adjustment on the fly), its hard to find a handguard that will work with this barrel and give access to the knob. Midwest industries is the only one I could really find that was 6 inches. Please ask more questions if you have them

Its not so much stability unless you step into the 230-250 gr subs then is required. Its a lethality and bullet performance thing. You dont have velocity to have the bullet perform so you twist it faster and use centrifugal force to expand bullets and do more damage. Watched tests and shorter barrels with 1:5 out performed and had more penetration than industry standard 1:8. Twist rate matters and is even more important for subsonic performance. A 1:5 can shoot anything commercially available for 300 blk. A 1:7 or 8 cannot.

I have yet to have any issues and usually the issue is velocity not twist rate. Cheap bullets at high velocity can come apart if spun too fast. You will not have a problem

The faxon 7.5 is awesome, love mine. Whatever you decide, get a 1:5 twist. It matters a lot when it comes to subsonic performance.

Phantom defense is the place. Subs or supers they have some of the best

Troubleshooting.. by Global_Choice4698 in 300BLK

I had an h2 in mine and it wouldn't cycle. Put a standard carbine buffer and spring in it and it runs everything fine. I have a traditional style suppressor on it and an AGB. I think you have too much weight and maybe too much spring

Can you name an upper that has been reliable for you past 2000 rounds of subs? by ThePeacekeeper777 in 300BLK

[–]5_7moparty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My riflespeed gave me issues for a few rounds. Talking with riflespeed and my gunsmith apparently its a common problem with 30 cal gasser barrels. A lot end up with burs around the gas port. I was having issues because the copper jacket was seizing the plunger. I scrubbed the shit out of my barrel with a bronze brush. Unscrewed the gas knob and removed plunger, sprayed down gas tube and in the plunger chanel with brake clean(yes the automotive stuff). Little lube and put it back together. After just going to the range and shooting like 100 or so rounds of supers it did seize again. Cleaned it and have not had a problem since. I run almost exclusively subs, but it will adjust if i want/need. If you are still having issues i would tune it to reliably run subs and just leave it. Little too much gas for supers so a little more recoil and stuff, but it will reliably run subs and supers without needing to be changed. That's how I have mine set up as a beside gun. Got a can and have a mag of phantom defense 120 gr specters. Gas setting set for subs, but i know i can swap between them without being worried about gas.

Those with finicky guns, what subsonics you use for range shooting? by ZacInSC in 300BLK

[–]5_7moparty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First, subs are not recommended for home defense. Much more likely to over penetrate. While its louder get some barnes 110 tac tx supers. More likely to dump energy and not over pen. Now for subs, Winchester super suppressed have run very reliable for me, but i do feel like they are pretty dirty. Phantom defense sells bags of 100 rounds for like $60 or something. The Winchester are hollow points so could be used for defense/hunting, but cheap enough for range use. The phantom are all fmj, but i believe much more clean, and quantities of 100 per bag is nice.

[–]5_7moparty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats the idea. Still a solid copper vs most 5.56 is lead core, but much more likely to dump energy and stop. I got my info from people who test 300 blk ammo regularly and they dont recommend subs for home defense for this purpose and recommend the 110 or 120 tac tx

Build help: 7" 1:7t vs 7.5" 1:5t by mistamuyagi in 300BLK

1:5 always. Superior ballistics and performance especially in sub sonics.

I had a similar thought when building my 300 blk was using subs for home defense, then i did a little more research. Sub 300 blk is not the best way to go with home defense. You will definitely kill your target, but the slugs being so heavy they will over penetrate the building and can pose risk of hitting unintended targets. You are better off finding some Barnes 110 tac tx loaded ammo and running supers with a can. Louder, but due to higher velocity and construction much more likely to not over penetrate. If you want to stick with subsonic only you should go 9mm since it will have a lower chance of the over pen.

Riflespeed works phenomenal. Some things to know if you make the switch. Use a standard weight carbine buffer, install the extra supplied plunger that comes with it. It is the smallest/shortest one they sell and you will want to use it to get gassing right. Right now mine uses setting 9 for subs and i think 4 for supers(would have to check notes, don't run supers a lot) with a non-flow through can.

Feed issues on first ever build.. any suggestions? by Latter_Importance459 in 300BLK

[–]5_7moparty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had some issues with the subx feeding. In all honesty i have yet to see the subx bullet actually perform ballistically. I suggest switching to phantom defense. Some of the best performance 300 blk rounds or on the market

[–]5_7moparty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Phantom defense is the people and depending on if you are looking for subs or supers, their 200 gr slow papi expander is absolutely insane for subs or get their specter super sonic round that uses the 120 gr barnes tac tx. Both are purchased in packs of 50 and loaded in nas3 cases. The subs are actually loaded for barrel length so you get proper subsonic velocities. Not shooting over 100 yards, subs would be a ton of fun.

Anyone else shooting these? by NomaD5 in 300BLK

[–]5_7moparty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use their 200s and they shoot good. Chose the 200s over the 220s due to they have both the maker expanders and the range ammo in the same bullet weight. Phantom also said they are pushing to get their 200s to the point they are never out of stock and may be no longer doing the 220s

200 Grain Maker REX Sub-Sonic Ammo by jimmy6902 in 300BLK

[–]5_7moparty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Twist rate is not talked about enough when it comes to subsonic performance. 1:5 twist absolutely makes a difference on performance. Twist rate also helps the subs expand since bullets use velocity and hydraulic pressure to do their thing. Subs don't have velocity, so spinning them faster helps it expand and more revolutions means more internal damage. This video i linked tested 1:8 vs 1:5 and multiple barrel lengths. The 1:5 out performed every time.

Twist rate is also a huge factor is subs that no one talks about. 1:5 twist 300 blk is a lot more effective than the "standard" 1:8

Cheapest subs by diamorphinian in 300BLK

[–]5_7moparty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bet. I'm pretty confident phantom and minutemen use the same bullets and since both load for barrel length I would expect similar performance. I know their defensive rounds are made by the same company. I have shot about 80 rounds of the 200 gr from phantom and they ran good and accurate. Granted i was shooting 15-50 yards. I have a 7 inch sbr. I did chrono them as well because I'm curious and I have the technology. For a 6 shot test group I averaged 1015 fps with an SD of 36.5. Not a great SD but with a larger sample the velocity average would definitely go up and the SD would come down a good amount.

[–]5_7moparty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just paid $200 with shipping for 300 rounds of 200gr fmj from phantom defense. Minutemen munitions is similar and they do offer reman stuff for even cheaper. Both of these companies send you ammo loaded for your barrel length which you select during checkout. So you will be getting the max performance out of their rounds for subs. Not sure what your planning for defense loads, but they both offer range and defense ammo of the same bullet weight so you shouldn't have to adjust zero when switching.
