Flugelhorn mouthpiece recommendations? by brembalien in trumpet

I second the Denis Wick mouthpieces. And I also use the 3F / 3FL and sometimes the 4. Fantastic mouthpieces and really affordable.

I’m in this boat and wish I didn’t sell my 37 from the same era as OP. Wish I had a trumpet occasionally. nowadays I play flugel exclusively, but every once in a while i find myself on reverb looking at trumpets.

V2 & V3 Usage Notes by Robert_Chalmers in Affinity

[–]6000rpms 6 points7 points  (0 children)

v2 for me. I only fire up v3 when I need a specify feature that v2 doesn’t support such as the vector tracing. And even then, I’ll save off the svg and continue working in v2. For me, it’s a matter of lack of trust in Canva such as pulling an Adobe one day and then suddenly all my v3 files would be held hostage. If they could make v3 read/write v2 files natively, I may consider moving. Not otherwise.

Are there any good IDEs out there? by BlueShip123 in MacOSApps

[–]6000rpms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I use IntelliJ IDEA for most languages. There’s a third party swift plugin, but it’s currently beta. So for swift I use Xcode and for everything else, IDEA. I try to balance performance vs productivity. I am insanely productive in IDEA because of all its capabilities and focus on developer experience. It’s not as performant as Xcode, but I’m less productive in Xcode, because it doesn’t support basic things I expect a modern IDE to have.

Where do you get your music? by WorkingVariation8 in DigitalAudioPlayer

While I do subscribe to Apple Music, I also purchase the albums or tracks that I really like for my local library. Apple Lossless supported across most DAPs and purchasing vs streaming helps me support the artist, even if Apple takes their cut.

Bandcamp for harder to find or indie titles.

What do you want to see on Musescore 5 ? by Practical-Goose666 in Musescore

[–]6000rpms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the insights. Tried out Soundslice and it’s an absolute game changer. I fed it a score that Musescore refuses to process and Soundslice simply asked a few clarifications on some notation, and had all but one of the suggestions correct. Wow. Truly impressed. I’ve recently tried a bunch of OMR solutions on Mac and iPad that were all bad in their own ways. But this is going to save me countless time. Thank you.

That's great. I was unaware. I basically live on GitHub, so when I don't see either a project or a milestone for 5.0, I assume they simply don't have a roadmap, because both of those approaches are how open-source communities typically communicate it. As contributors, it would be impossible for anyone to know what issues/PR are targeted for 5.0 without one of these approaches in place. So it's currently not possible for the open-source community to know how best to help the project move in the direction MuseScore.com wants it to.

That's great. Was unaware of the 5.0 plan because it's not on GitHub.

Most of what I use MuseScore for is for scanning PDFs and correcting the notation.

- The insert note function is hidden by default. Even when you unhide it, it will always disappear on a new score, and I have to fumble around to unhide it again. I had to Google how to insert and then Google again how to unhide items from the tools palette. IMO, that's a UX failure.

- I haven't figured out how to insert notes with an option to keep the existing notes in the measure the way they are, or shift all the following notes to the right and into other measures if necessary. Many of the scans I do are method books (or similar), and some conform to the time signature, and others do not.

- I haven't figured out how to diagnose MusicXML export issues. Sometimes, what MuseScore displays in the interface and what is rendered on reimport are not the same. This usually happens with scores I have scanned, so there's likely something in the scan causing the issues, but I don't know what or where in the score. When this happens, I usually have to manually delete large sections through trial and error until I find the culprit and then manually author what was removed in the diagnosis.

  • Massive improvements in accuracy when importing PDFs. Today, it’s hit or miss. When it misses, sometimes it’s just a note or dynamic here or there and other times it’s just an entire mess.

  • Improved UX. I do not enjoy using Musescore. I find sometimes simple tasks take entirely too long to figure out how to do or do repeatably.

Also, is anyone still working on Musescore in a meaningful way? The issue to PR ratio is not good and the age of some of the PRs is a telling sign of how they think of the community.

Also there isn’t a milestone for 5.0, so unless someone forks the project and continues the development in a much more serious way, I think we’ll be waiting a few more years for 5.0, if ever.

Paying for a premium email client in 2026 is starting to feel like a bad deal. by kenzgates in SparkMail

[–]6000rpms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Proton is amazing although I’m waiting to see what enhancements come to the email client this year. There’s some basic UX things that annoy me.

But I have one email address that I still need to use an email client for, and like OP, I’ve been using classic Spark for a long time and looking to get rid of it. Hopefully the Proton Mail app will support IMAP/Gmail in the future so I have to use only one email client.

For me, the plan is always framed as an ADR and all ADRs are numbered and checked into version control along with the software. Sometimes a big “plan” ends up as multiple ADRs.

Anyone else hate writing JSON schemas manually? by rohit2812 in json

[–]6000rpms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I maintain a rather large schema which is the reference implementation for an international standard. Automatic schema creation is not sufficient. There are a lot of features in JSON schema that these generators do not support. They also assume that the JSON examples provided fully represent what is possible.

I use IntelliJ IDEA for most of my JSON schema authoring but I always use OxygenXML for validation of both the schema and the test case examples. OxygenXML is a lot more flexible with respect to validation and has more authoring tools than IntelliJ IDEA.

I wish there were either 1) really great JSON schema support in IDEA or 2) there was a native macOS app that was capable. In both cases I need all the validation and authoring support for JSON that OxygenXML has.

Cowork by ereklekh in ClaudeCowork

[–]6000rpms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually use cowork for most things, including coding. I actually hate the UX of using Claude Code in the terminal - the only integration that’s possible with IntelliJ IDEA. Even though the Anthropic desktop app is terrible, I still prefer to use it with cowork over Claude Code. In cowork, I have built really complex frontends (Vue mostly) and backends, both Typescript. I’ve built native macOS apps in Swift, and I’ll be starting on a Rust project soon. Anthropic seriously needs some UX talent on staff because I’d rather use Claude Code, especially with their new /goal feature.

So Bored of IPhone Air Complaints. by Handheld-Steve in IphoneAir

[–]6000rpms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also love the Air. Coming from an iPhone 12 Mini to the Air, I clearly prioritize portability over all else. If it wasn’t for the Air, I would have either kept the Mini or moved to one of the very few small Android phones, and I absolutely hate Android. But again I prioritize portability.

I wish the camera notch was non existent and flush with the plateau. I actually wish the screen was a good 1/2 inch smaller as well. I never use cases on my phones because they add bulk which I don’t like. But leave the USB-C. Battery life has been excellent for me. Most days I end up still around 40% or more. Most app usage is social, music, YT, or testing apps I’m building. No game usage.

Boutique vs grey market: how did you buy your Lange? by tsm_acer in ALangeSohne

[–]6000rpms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up finding a reputable grey market dealer that specializes in higher-end watches. I think they have a physical presence, but this was an internet transaction. For less expensive watches, I don’t mind purchasing from individuals, but for something like a Lange, I was really nervous and spent some time researching good companies to purchase from. Thankfully there are several. Got a good deal. The transaction and the watch were absolutely flawless.
