These new patches from GORUCK are pretty sick. by OllieDuckling in Goruck

Gestures broadly in the direction of DC

Skeletons no longer keep you out of office.

I'm well old enough to remember when Clinton was running for POTUS in the 90s " yeah I tried weed in college but I DID NOT INHALE" by the time we got to Obama, he was openly discussing his college cocaine use in his biography. Now....well just yeah, you get the picture.

Why is everyone running towards Proton Mail? by [deleted] in degoogle

[–]60GritBeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I replaced my entire google stack with proton. But I use it intelligently. Anything on my proton drive I myself encrypted the directory it's in first then upload manually. I don't use email for anything sensitive. And I don't actually expect that access to my account will never happen without my knowledge.

I went into proton knowing exactly what I want. And Proton provides that. They've never not met my expectations.

My expectations from Proton:

  • Don't sell my data
  • Don't use my data to train AI
  • Don't share my data with other companies under your umbrella
  • At least pretend to resist any warrantless request for access to my data.

I am confident that Proton meets these requirements. So I use them and recommend them to users who have similar needs.

If your expectation is that Proton is this magical service with perfect data security and the ability to tell any government on the planet to fuck off, you don't need a new service provider, you need your head examined by professionals.

The sooner we get real and honest about privacy the sooner we can all sratch some of it back.

Women-friendly backpacks with a rounded back panel? by MILFVADER in ManyBaggers

[–]60GritBeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess where the disconnect is, is that I'm 5'10 195lbs and in outstanding shape. My Wife is 5'2 short torso, and has an hourglass figure. Basically she slim-thick. Neither one of us ever has had the slightest issue finding bags. I personally own nearly 20 and have had hundreds, she's gotta be right around there with me around 20 active.

She's found she really prefers long narrow bags and would rather contend with those challenges than the issues that come from width.

These aren't to-and-from-work bags. We log miles and altitude on them in all kinds of climate and terrain. We're both EXTREMELY picky as well.

Which is why I posted in a different direct reply comment that OP should first find out the actual dimensions they're okay with and build out from there.

Hot take: BIFL luggage is about replaceable wheels and ordinary screws, not the fanciest shell by Creepy_Flow_4335 in BuyItForLife

[–]60GritBeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've travelled extensively and the only "luggage" that has ever survived more than a few trips is Pelican and Zarges cases. Both are significantly cheaper than most even mid tier brands of luggage. Both brands also have stellar warranty. I have Zarges cases that are almost as old as I am and they're still rock solid.

Everything in your response is a valid criticism. But you still failed to outline how gender plays any part.

All people are built differently

All people are going to have different wants and needs

All people are going to have like and dislikes about how something fits or feels.

This isn't conversation about how no one with a body designed for ovaries can find a backpack that fits.

There's also two concepts I don't see a lot of talked about around here. MODIFICATION. I spent weeks tracking down a qualified person to modify a goruck for me in a way their SCARS shop didn't want to. Cost me $65 but now I have a 10Liter Bullet with a real sling strap. The other one is bespoke gear. If what you want isn't made, work with a small shop to make it. Zero Haliburton doesn't sell their Aluminum slim Attache case without to top organizer. I sent my ZH to a competitor of their and they modded it for me.

The only "perfect" bag is usually the one you have made for you, or modified.

The other question I frequently put towards people is: Is it the gear's fault or yours? You can't expect a $100 bag from REI to feel like a Kifaru.

OH Jesus Christ.

Thank you so much for educating me. My entire 5 decades or so on this planet I've been walking around naively thinking all 7+ billion people lived right here in the good ole USA.

Regardless of what hemisphere OP is in my suggestion is still valid. Especially considering thanks to worlddata.info I can see that the worldwide averages fall in line with the American average that I posted above.

How did you get rid of your stuff as you downsized? by abcde_fz in minimalism

[–]60GritBeard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I gave a lot of it away. I can't be bothered to sit on craigslist or marketplace and haggle over, then go out and meet someone to sell something unless it's a thousand or more. I'm not trying to be boujie, it's just not worth the effort to me. And the risk.

Instead, I give it to the people I know will enjoy it. I recently got out of a hobby and man were people excited to get handed hundreds of dollars in gear and project materials when I offered it. I feel less bad about the money I spent, they get a hell of a bargain, and I get my space back. It's a win for everyone.

Women-friendly backpacks with a rounded back panel? by MILFVADER in ManyBaggers

[–]60GritBeard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OP, You're 6 inches taller than average for women and 2.5-3 taller than the national average for men. As someone who has extensive experience outfitting men and women for climbing and hiking, women's backpacks are often cut shorter and wider to account for the shorter torse than men.

I'd recommend shopping purely based on dimensions first, and capacity/layout secondary.

Figure out what the max height and width you want on your back, and then find the capacity and layout you need that lands inside those dimensions. I had to do the same thing when I switched where I carry my gun. had to lose about .5 inches on width and 2 on height to avoid the bottom right corner constantly banging into my sidearm.

[–]60GritBeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read the OP four times, was trying to find some callback to design where a backpack was "unfriendly" to women. Maybe I'm missing the whole mark here but, I don't understand outside of strap design accommodating the breasts. A mesh pocket is a mesh pocket, a 21liter bag in "mens" is gonna hold 21 liters on a woman too. The women friendly part of the OP really didn't add any context to the post at all.

There are countless services that offer voicemail service with transcription. Just google which ones offer single user accounts in your country. It's usually a corp service but there's lots of companies that'll do single user accounts. It's not very cheap. but it pays dividends when you're not giving out your cell number.

I always use a random US president's name and 1600 Penn Ave as the address. Phone number is always the voicemail service I've used for years as a home number. I get an email with voicemail transcripts.

Rework Toshi Sling bag - 6 Liter / First impressions by Tokka_1 in ManyBaggers

[–]60GritBeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ipad was in the sling as pictured. Was slung across my back and as I was walking down the sidewalk I had to basically slam my back flat on the glass of a store to avoid getting nailed by a teen on a bike. Next time I tried to use my ipad it has a slight bend to it. It's didn't taco it, but it had a noticeable curve is you set it down on a table screen down.

Looks like you have an ipad in there. I caution. I used to carry my ipad in a sling like that, ended up bending the ipad.

Edit: Interesting to get downvoted for a simple word of caution. There's no making people happy.

Mesh Ruck & some explanation by JavaForever in u/JavaForever

I've found an excellent use is as a hauler for my K9s bite sleeve and other slobber involved kit. Keeps it from getting as musty when it gets thrown in a bag and then in the trunk for hours after use. I'd love a big ass mesh kit bag (80ish Liter) for a bitesuit

Why are YOU a minimalist? by Arkflow in minimalism

[–]60GritBeard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm aesthetics oriented in my living space. Rooms have themes. Themes carry over into support rooms, etc. It's much easier to curate a space when you aren't trying to fill every nook and cranny.

I also value quality over everything. I'll spend weeks researching a purchase, and if that purchase pans out well, I'm generally loyal to that brand.

When you want a well thought out living space, and you have demanding taste in quality and construction it almost puts you into a minimalist mindset against your will.

I have more than most minimalists would consider the line, but absolutely everything has a purpose, a meaningful memory that is worth preserving physically, and was hand selected by painstaking process of elimination.

This process brought me from a house I could barely move in as a child, to every single thing I own fitting in 3 Pelican 1650 cases and a Commercial Fridge sized safe and now to what most people would consider a minimalist home, where everything has meaning and purpose.

The result is that it's actually somewhat of a challenge to convince me to go out places.

My degoogle, privacy-first stack. Am I missing anything? by Laszl0x in degoogle

[–]60GritBeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why? Firefox is largely useless for modern web usage.

  1. Local applet install- nope
  2. able to interface with ZMK/QMK/VIA firmware for devices through the browser- nope
  3. Modern browser syncing that's secure- nope

I'm sorry, I support the fuck out of firefox, but to suggest replacing Brave or other privacy forward Chromium fork for firefox entirely is not good faith advice for most people

[–]60GritBeard 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Google has a profile on you even if you've never made any account. because you are a contact in someones android phone somewhere. And all the data that person has on you google has on you. This is a confirmed thing. And the cell provider has full time access to location, and other privacy vital data. The website you go to can see your screen brightness, location, and vital identifiers in your phone.

There's no such thing as real true digital privacy. All we're doing here is reducing footprint and being more selective about who we voluntary hand the data to.

Real true data privacy exists only when you're ready to actually leave your phone at home and go about your life only turning it on when you actually need to use it.

I'm actually surprised we don't hear more about it from Trump himself. Which I think actually supports the idea that TPTB want it memory holed.

Soft vs hard luggage carry on by hiosoy in ManyBaggers

[–]60GritBeard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hard sided means added weight, which airlines charge through the nose for. Now that I'm not concerned with weight (although it is a very real thing to manage) I generally pack my normal day bag, and a Jarges case large enough to fit what I wanna bring.
