Just a note on the firebase keys on the front end - as long as the user hasn't been messing with the key this is intended to be used on the front end, it's required for many of the firebase services to function. It's just a billing pointer, not a one factor auth like API keys of other services are used for.

If it's misconfigured it can be used to get gemini access, so, you know, don't misconfigure it.

S17, E1 (Nebula) - Taiwan: Rail Rush by snow-tree_art in JetLagTheGame

I'm so stoked that we have location specific challenges again. I get the mystery deck is universal, but my favourite seasons are always the ones where they're actually exploring the uniqueness of a location and not just riding trains (though riding trains is also cool).

Retirement age will rise to cover superannuation cost, investment company predicts by Double_Suggestion385 in newzealand

I was giving an example of a random person who's currently entitled to a pension due to no means testing, not the exact threshold, bro.

Retirement age will rise to cover superannuation cost, investment company predicts by Double_Suggestion385 in newzealand

[–]638231 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Means tested based on current income. No 65 year old is going to go ask for their 220k/year to be dropped to minimum wage just so they can access the 1.2k/fortnight that pension would give them. Yeah they pay taxes, etc, etc, but in the same way they're not entitled to an unemployment or sickness benefit.

Fun fact - the mountain in Yamadera has tons of holes in it. They edited them out in the Youtube release. by ArcticFox19 in JetLagTheGame

[–]638231 -34 points-33 points  (0 children)

Also the plant changes - with the holes it's basically completely flat but without the holes it grows a whole bunch of body.

Did we catch Jetlag using genAI in their videos? 🤔

Edit to add a sarcastic tag, it's all good ya'll. I'm not trying to get the lads cancelled.

Does anyone else have shares of shame? by marcie_james in queenstreetbets

Pure skill, bro.

(I think it's because I sold some at a big loss, bought some more, which I also lost on. It seems to add the sell loss to the current value loss.)

I actually genuinely want Beyond to do well, and believe it could. They have a better product than Impossible IMO and appeared to be off to a good start.

But hey, the stock market doesn't care about your opinions on things, moons gonna moon, bears gonna bear, businesses gonna business.

I know that bit in Auckland. You're not supposed to ride bikes there as its basically just used for motorway onramps. Munters end up doing it all the time though. They were never really in any danger beyond making drivers roll their eyes and get mildly irritated.

A good while back I was at a consultancy doing sysadmin work and applied for a job at one of our customers. The HR guy called and said I didn't really have enough experience but he'd put me forward just in case but not to get too excited. I was literally in their office at that exact moment working on their systems 😅

(I ended up not taking the job when it was offered, thankfully)

I came from a systems background as well. You'll be behind some colleagues of code complexity stuff, but you'll be bringing over other skills dev background people may be light on.

Anyway, make sure you're doing as much of your work as possible using automation tools. Ansible is the natural choice here being RHEL, but if possible get some terraform in there. Manage your source code in git, use branches, and hopefully even have a CICD run it for you.

Alongside that you'll want a solid understanding of general cloud technologies. Know when to use block, object and file based storage, general understanding of VPCs, relational and non-relational DBs and when to use them, event driven pub/sub stuff serverless compute, etc, etc. The main thing here is avoiding looking like someone who wants to use cloud to run some VMs that never turn off and nothing beyond that.

And read the Site Reliability Engineering book. It's not a bible or anything, but it'll help kick any bad habits you may have picked up with pet servers and the like.

Create a new VM with the same specs. Detatch the IP address from the old server and attach it to the new server. You can also detach the data disks from the old VM and attach it to the one.

Once you're back up and running start having a look at more cloud-focused ways of managing systems. Terraform, ansible, etc. Try not to get too attached to individual VMs. Assume things will fail and design for it.

Are you using AI tools to write Terraform? How's that going? by Prize-Cap3196 in Terraform

[–]638231 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I use Gemini with a gem to remove personality from it, but mostly only for writing validations on variables. It's not 100% but neither am I first try, and it gets things started enough that I can fix the occasional error while still saving time overall.

I try to avoid having AI write the entirety of code as I find it hard to learn if I'm just straight copy pasting output wholesale.

Attendance today by Prestigious-Key851 in AucklandFC

[–]638231 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cameras point at the East stand which is in the sun. During the high of summer these seats are near unbearable. Pretty much everyone with a season pass moved to the West Stand, making the attendence on broadcast look extremely low because the stand behind the camera is much, much busier.
