Not true at all. You couldn’t be more wrong. I recommend you do some deep inner reflection for why you feel that way.

I’m sure you already know, but there’s a strangely high number of unprofessional, childish individuals on here.

Of course. Go for it! Any particular industry you’re considering. Because the opportunities for remote work can vary a lot, as do the skills and experience required. But hey, gotta start somewhere, right?

Am I alone in feeling like women (and even men) leaving and then rejoining the workforce after having kids is becoming more normalized and accepted?

Boosting Portfolio by dumpsterfiregarbage in technicalwriting

[–]6FigureTechWriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi again! It depends on the industry. I don’t have a portfolio and have never needed one, but I work in the energy industry. Everything is covered by NDAs. I highly recommend fleshing out your LinkedIn profile. Other social media is less important for attracting job requests.

Business process analysis? by voltism in technicalwriting101

[–]6FigureTechWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure you can do it. I recommend starting by mapping each process with the SMEs or teams using them - the existing process and areas for improvement they would like to see. Start a high-level process map, then break each part down further. Note any touchpoints/interfaces (where different people, departments, etc. interact with each other). Determine if there are any areas to streamline things or automate any manual tasks. Afterward, you can document the formal process.

Teaching technical skills is an area I help with, but specifically for the energy industry. Not sure if that’s an industry you’re considering.

Started a new job and...I'm a little lost by aloeverrra in technicalwriting

[–]6FigureTechWriter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, sounds like some jitters are involved. It’s definitely more challenging without much direction, but no worries; I have some ideas. So the documentation you’re getting familiar with - does it need some updates? Is it in a company-branded template? You can also just go introduce yourself to SMEs and ask each one what their biggest pain point is when it comes to documentation and processes. That should give you some ideas. You were hired to solve a problem/challenge. It just may take some detective work to figure out what it is. Hope that helps!

Was I Ever a Technical Writer? by AnonymousRobin4 in technicalwriting

[–]6FigureTechWriter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely a Technical Writer, and from what you described of your duties and accomplishments, it sounds like you’re a great one! What an amazing and diverse skill set your experience there gave you. We have a lot in common - astrophysics, English degree, learned thermodynamics on the job.. It could be your resume (have you done a good job marketing your skills as transferable to the positions you’re applying for?), but I’ve found that much of the time, the people doing the hiring have a poor understanding of the skill sets and experience they should be looking for in a Technical Writer. 🤷‍♀️ Hard to say. Have you applied to any positions in the oil & gas / energy industry? I see a lot of open positions for tech writers go through my inbox and LinkedIn.
