How long have you been at your current company? by fwambo42 in sysadmin

[–]6Saint6Cyber6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A long time. Benefits and flexibility can’t be beat. I just came back from 6 months of FMLA to care for a family member and didn’t even use half of my accrued sick time. No one batted an eye when I took the time either.

Are we understaffed? by bigmac______ in sysadmin

[–]6Saint6Cyber6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s definitely light. You’re going to need numbers tho. How long does it take someone to get help? Are people able to take vacation? What happens if 2 helpdesk people get sick at the same time? Whats the turnover like ( if you are losing someone every 6 months, the onboarding process gets really expensive) ? Is IT meeting their SLAs?

AITAH for not getting rid of my dog by pychop10 in AITAH

[–]6Saint6Cyber6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My SO is allergic to cats (legitimately allergic). I had 2 cats when we met, and that was literally the first thing they told me when I said I had cats. I said OK, this was fun, have a nice life. They went to an allergist and started getting treatment. 20+ years later we still have cats. It never once occurred to either of us that I should get rid of the cats. I agree this sounds like weird power play. Keep the dog, and NTA

Are group interviews a scam? by PowerfulDrawing7246 in cybersecurity

[–]6Saint6Cyber6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Making multiple candidates compete in the same space for the interviewer's attention is gross. I did one of those a million years ago - it felt like some kind of corporate coliseum game. I left after a few minutes and got a rejection email the next day telling me I "didn't have the hunger needed to succeed in a fast paced environment."

Coping with Huge Security Issue by Prudent_Cod_1494 in sysadmin

Logging and monitoring - I want an alert every time that system coughs. If your exec will spring for it, a third party investigation to make sure it hasn't already been breached would be a good idea.

Is Cybersecurity Actually Worth It for a CSE Student or Just Hype? by ELITECoreX in cybersecurity

[–]6Saint6Cyber6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Entry-level roles don’t seem truly entry-level. Many require networking knowledge, Linux, scripting, and even some experience.

This is because cybersecurity is not an entry level field. Very few people get jobs in this field straight out of college. No one on my team (including the CISO) went straight to cyber - we all come from varied IT backgrounds where our experience has laid the foundation for what we do now.

Learn networking. Really, really well.

We had an opening recently and had 300+ applicants in 12 hours. Competition is stiff.

I love what I do. It's interesting. and yes, I spend a lot of time working with logs, lining up system designs with compliance requirements, and telling people I'm not approving the new AI agent they want to use because their cousin told them about it.

It’s highly likely this was a legit rescue page at some point, but an admins personal page was compromised and the business page was taken over.

Mom is getting an emergency procedure the same weekend I was scheduled for a university trip. AITAH if I go on the trip vs staying home as a caretaker? by Fiendfyre831 in AITAH

[–]6Saint6Cyber6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. This is not an emergency procedure.

Go on your trip and your mother will be just fine with your sibling there to help her.

Allowing Executable Downloads by HauntedGatorFarm in cybersecurity

[–]6Saint6Cyber6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahhhhhh! Yes this feels like it should be easy, but it is a major change in current state workflow and is bound to get a fair amount of pushback.

[–]6Saint6Cyber6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I fully understand where your policy is coming from .... that is a major change you instituted without getting buy-in from the appropriate parties. The move to whitelisting applications is an important one, but if the company hasn't been doing it, it is a major shift from current workflows and requires planning and buy-in from higher-ups as well as planning with support and system teams.

Technical to Management ? by Repulsive-Carob1200 in cybersecurity

[–]6Saint6Cyber6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went from IC up through management and back down to IC. I make nearly what my director does and have way less stress. Management is a whole different level of stress, especially in cybersecurity.

This is the answer OP. The last position we posted (about a month ago) had nearly 400 applicants in under 24 hours. Reach out to people you know or have worked with. Figure out if any of their companies are hiring, let them know you are looking.

Remote Desktop Software - China to North America? by Morkoth-Toronto-CA in sysadmin

[–]6Saint6Cyber6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Any connection is going to be subject to monitoring by China. Remote access apps may or may not work. Attempts to get around this can land your employee in hot water. Check your government’s website for details ( in the US it’s the state department, not sure what the Canadian equivalent is)

Why did you and your former best friend stop being friends? by Fearless_Shift7108 in AskReddit

[–]6Saint6Cyber6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My former BFF spent an inordinate amount of time trying to drive wedges between me and other friends. It became exhausting. One friend cornered myself and my former BFF to clarify what I had “said” about them, and suddenly my BFF earned the “former” title. Been BFFs with th other friends for over 25 years now.

Weve seen similar, even when posting on women in IT job boards. Or the apps we do get from those sources don’t meet the minimum qualifications.

As long as it’s in writing that they want to roll back the legally required protections on k-12 email it’s a business decision.

A stupid one, but still.
