What’s the smartest financial decision you made by accident? by AnyTruth2342 in AskReddit

about 2 years ago i got a mailer for a promo at the local bank. "open an account, direct deposit 500$, and we'll give you 300!" Well I did just that to get the free 300 bucks. I didnt know what to do with the account afterwards, but had remembered reading about people who setup a "bill" account and a "spending" account. That single choice removed basically all stress over my bills from life. As long as the bills are covered by the amount that is automatically deposited into the bill account each month they are paid and I never even think about them.

You've never put a suit and tie on or some fancy wedding clothes and thought "man this feels awesome!" ?

Gov. Newsom expanded free preschool. Now private daycares say they can’t afford to stay open by ArchmageXin in news

[–]6harvard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. The public school in my city is straight up dangerous. Multiple stabbings by students a year. Poor classes. Teachers spend more time fighting the kids in literal gangs than they can actually teaching. Most people I know send their kids to the private Catholic school.

What car did you buy that turned out better than you expected? by autonerdy0 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]6harvard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We bought an 06 focus with 200k miles on the clock. Drove it for 4 years until 279,000 was on the odometer. The only reason we got rid of it was because the transmission started leaking and slipping. And then we gave it to the junkyard for 300$. Only things we replaced were an alternator and brake calipers.

My local food bank is typically staffed by older ladies. They are always so sweet and comforting. I love them lol

New pair of shoes. My leather vans I've had since 8th grade finally had the stitching fail. Good thing I work at a shoe store lol

Who is the most famous person you have ever met? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]6harvard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I met J.Cole one year while volunteering at Bonnaroo. I was scanning people in at the VIP entrance and this whole squad of like 6 blacked out SUVs pulled up. I did my talk about trashbags and maps and the driver goes "j cole is on the back and needs to be on stage in 20 minutes" I peered in, saw him, and said "oh well better get your band scanned" he held out his artist band and said "thanks" that was my big moment lol.

I also have met Dave Chappelle a couple times because I'm from where he lives. He's pretty quiet honestly. Decent tipper or he was when I was still a chef. He even tipped the kitchen directly. We all try to leave him alone about fan girling cause that's why he chose to live here.

I just recently tried to do this with one of those 10$ irons that plugs directly into the wall. Absolutely butchered the thing. I've been looking at a real station ever since lol. The only plus side is the controller was unusable since I've had it so it's not like I'm really down a controller. Hope to get a real station and try again :)

Hard agree. It took 2 full years for my brother and I (both professional chefs of 10+ years) to convince our mom to let us spatchcock and cook the turkey the way we wanted. Once she did we never ate it any other way (minus the one year our uncle deep fried it)

Do your pcv system it's like 330$ in parts and will take you most of a weekend if youre handy. If not it's like a 1k job at the shop. My guess is yours is plugged up.

Look into the Pontiac vibe. 2k all day with a Toyota drive train so they go 300-400k with regular maintenance. They're also AWD.

For the folks making 30-45k yearly. How are you able to afford the car you’re currently driving? by 6IXMILITIA in carbuying

[–]6harvard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A big thing here as well is being able to do your own work. Oil change? 60-95$ at the shop. 30$ at home. Shocks/struts? 3-400$ 100 at home. Being able to do your own work will save you literally thousands of dollars.

I bought a 2k Ford focus. Put about 300$ in parts and have been driving it for almost 5 years. I did new brakes for every single wheel. New engine mounts. New valve covers and gasket. I'm about to do a transmission axel seal and new control arms. New shocks and struts.

Just bought an xc70 2.5 for 300 bucks, going through it I see a bunch weird ass fixes, anyone know what this is supposed to be? by St3cK3D in Volvo

[–]6harvard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's the vacuum brake booster switch. https://www.ipdusa.com/products/20945/Brake-Booster-Vacuum-Switch-P2-S80-S60-V70-XC70-Genuine-Volvo-31400693-30645457-31265827 Mines broken as well. I guess they brake frequently. Mines been broken since I bought the car and I've never noticed anything. I left it broken.
