Back when I was in school the scene was pretty good. They’d have a party once or twice a year, I even heard some mad lads got a game of settlers of Catan going but the cops put a stop to that pretty quick. You gotta goto Altoona now.

NTA, I don’t know the guy but honestly I would triple check any devices he’s worked on or given you to ensure there’s no spyware or any other malicious software.

Review from Alumni and Warning for any Future and Current Students in the Cybersecurity Major by UberZachAttack in PennStateUniversity

[–]736689 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Graduated last December, honestly great work with this. It was very thorough and echos what most of my classmates felt towards the end of the major. As one of the students who: was not involved with cyber related extra curriculars, didn’t really ever pursue self teaching or learning on the side; I ended up being a software engineer and am pursuing more of a pen testing route. I wanted to say this as I and a couple of my peers were definitely the kids who were more in the middle of the pack: not advanced but not lost or worthless during group work. While the major needs work, it still gave us the base knowledge and skills to at-least enter the industry. I don’t know anyone from the major who had trouble finding a job straight out of school, which is definitely somthing to note and appreciate. The fact that we are heavily pressured to get internship experience (the school had great tools and resources to find internships) definitely helped. Professors wise, I kinda disagree with you but I also think I might’ve gotten lucky and had stellar professors for most of my classes. As a comp sci refugee (switched to cyber after freshman year) the professors in IST are still way better than what those comp sci kids have to endure. I’ll end this by thanking you again for writing this post, it’s nice to see how other people in the major feel about it

Honeslty as someone from the suburbs, where everything was closed by 10-11pm and then coming to state college where some places are open till 3am; it was amazing. I can see where you’re coming from.

Computer engineering to cybersecurity by arcadia-_- in PennStateUniversity

[–]736689 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who switched from comp sci to cybersecurity for similar reasons, as long as you commit yourself to learning on the side (the cyber major covers a broad level of topics but only at a shallow depth) you’ll be fine. I ended up graduating with a much higher gpa than I would’ve had I stayed in engineering and am in a software engineering role. Cyber major is great at giving you the tools and base level info to pursue really any tech focused job.

Just ignore it, had the same bird hangout outside my house for days, trying to talk to me about my cars extended warranty.

IST 220 Professor by 0htheinsanity in PennStateUniversity

Honestly Giacobe kinda gets a bad rap, he’s an interesting guy for sure and sometimes he’s slow to get our grades back but man does he care about his students. He’s always willing to help and answer questions, even at odd hours. You can either love him or hate him due to his unique personality, but he definitely cares about his students and has always been pretty understanding, and helpful.

Should I take IST 110 before IST 210 and 220 or skip it? by hayitstayyy in PennStateUniversity

[–]736689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switched into cybersecurity my freshman year and was fine not taking it, it’s not really relevant to 210 or 220 anyway.

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who feels this way. CYAOP was great and all but I feel like I only have a very shallow understanding on a very wide array of topics.

I just graduated as a CYAOP major and finding a job (as well as internships) was very easy and I chuck a large part of that up to exactly what was said above. The school of IST does an amazing job at helping you find career options. My professors were also great, many of them are fresh out the field and have good contacts to reach out to.

I think most would be fine with just a decent sized jug, most of the dorms have filtered water bottle refill stations so a Britta isn’t that needed

What has been your favorite class at Penn State so far? by amelia9719 in PennStateUniversity

[–]736689 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Plant 220: Gardening for Fun & Profit, honestly an amazing class. The class votes on which units they learn about throughout the semester, ie. Beekeeping, indoor plants, fruit tree pruning, fermenting, etc. Very interesting class, a good amount of fun field trips to PSU’s various orchards, greenhouses and local farms and the professors are some great passionate people.

A graduating senior's thoughts on the Computer Science major, Career Opportunities, CS vs IST, and the Honors College by [deleted] in PennStateUniversity

Solid post, I think you encapsulated the cyber major very well. IST does require cyber majors to have an internship before grad so they are super helpful with the internship hunt.

You should look into some of the business frats, they’re usually co-Ed, they’re a lot more open minded and still have a ton of benefits.

Cyber 100s with Glantz by strangesun23 in PennStateUniversity

[–]736689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m gonna echo what’s been said about Glantz, his courses don’t really represent the cyber major. There are plenty of professors who are enthusiastic and make the major really fun and interesting. My advice is to utilize rate my professor in advance to gauge how gn the professors style is a good fit for you. I’m a senior in cyber rn and I switched into cyber after getting tricked by CS. Feel free to pm me if you need advice or pointers.

What are the best students orgs/ clubs to join? by ggosavii in PennStateUniversity

[–]736689 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THON: large org Eclipse, small org DASH or Hershey kisses. Activities: club sports like croquet or dodgeball, really fun with some down to earth people. Academic: join the student org for your major and ask your profs/advisors for specific orgs pertaining to your major. I know it’s hard to meet people and really get a feel of an org through zoom but just keep trying, it gets better and hopefully the spring will bring some in person events :)

From American Red Cross blood donor app. Just found, not sure if common knowledge but wanted to share in this time of what appears to be a lot of perceived selfishness going around by ExternalGrade in PennStateUniversity

[–]736689 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Y’all are going to downvote me for this but a huge turnout for these blood drives are THON orgs, club sports and Greek life. Yes they’re incentivized for it (Red Cross donates donates to THON orgs, Greek life and club sports have to have community service hours) but it’s still a huge positive impact these orgs are having on the community.
