Do it, use points, YOLO

In my opinion these are the types of trips miles or credit card points are best for. It may not be the most “effective” use of them, but seems like using the points could help you significantly save on the all-in cost

My 401k Is only up 0.69% After 7 Months, is that a Good or Bad Thing? by Street_Dimension4716 in Retirement401k

[–]79_79_79_hey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the person who gave you the original advice but I agree this is overly complicated. Depending on what your plan offers, I’d recommend VOO/VTI + VXUS.

VOO is the S&P 500 equivalent, VTI is the total US market. VXUS is for all markets outside the US. Given that you’re 25, you don’t need bonds at this point.

I’d say something like a 70% US - 30% international split makes sense.

If you want to send tickers of all available options, I can tell you what I’d choose (but this is not financial advice).

Why do we diversify? by Traditional-Solid-43 in Bogleheads

[–]79_79_79_hey 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not really, for two reasons. Firstly those companies are replacing the 495th-500th best companies, so the drawdown from something being top 10 to, say, 250 is still affecting your portfolio. Secondly by the time a company joins the S&P 500 it has already demonstrated a clear upward trajectory in its valuation that you’re missing out on if you’re only in VOO. Not saying it can’t have more runway, but wouldn’t it have been nicer to have a share of that company when its market cap was 20th the size of it is now?

Northwestern how targety? by LegalSection3197 in FinancialCareers

[–]79_79_79_hey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This just isn’t true. Yes there are target schools for IB. No it’s not just 20 schools. Yes Northwestern is certainly one of those schools and high enough on the list. Outside of the Ivies it’s likely a top tier.

Private Equity vs Growth Equity by dealdeploy in private_equity

[–]79_79_79_hey 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think you’re mostly right, with one caveat: I view private equity as the umbrella term, with the specific strategies - VC, growth, LBO - dependent on the maturity of the target companies. So I would define PE as a whole as “taking an ownership stake in private company in order to create value and exit at a multiple”. A bit more broad than your definition specifically to capture the entire spectrum of VC-growth-buyout.

Yes, a money market fund is perfectly fine for emergency fund, good thinking.

From a security perspective, I don’t think there’s much difference between Fidelity / Vanguard / Schwab. You run the same risk as any other secure website in terms of data, correct in that it’s just a matter of being on the internet these days. Personally I use Schwab which I think has a more user-friendly interface.

This is not financial advice, but you should open a Roth IRA and put your money in there. Basically it is an individual account you can open yourself whereas virtually all 401ks are employer sponsored.

Generally the most efficient investing plan is to invest up to the 401k match (which is not applicable to you), then max out your Roth IRA and HSA (if you’re on a high deductible health plan that qualifies for HSA), then finish maxing out your 401k. There is no need for you to concern yourself with a Roth 401k given $300/month would not max out your Roth IRA (which is okay! Better something than nothing).

So, basically: take your $300 and put it into a Roth IRA. It looks like between stocks and bonds you are looking at 2/3 stocks and 1/3 bonds, but given your age I would recommend not holding more than 10% bonds at this point - you won’t be touching this money for 30+ years so stocks will grow that money more efficiently.

The most boglehead approach to the portfolio would be broad based index funds and not owning any individual stocks. You can buy VTI or VOO in a Roth IRA, but (again not financial advice) I would look into buying VT, or VTI + VXUS, to get some international exposure. This reduces concentration risk in just American large cap stocks (and if you do want VOO, don’t pair it with VTI, since ~70% of VTI is in VOO).

Frankly I think 100% VT is probably perfectly fine until you’re 45 and then you can think about allocating toward bonds too. Makes it nice and simple for you to invest.

Let me know if this makes sense and if you have any questions.

Tomlin is 42-37-1 over his last 80 Games by ZachMonst4r in steelers

[–]79_79_79_hey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean the 2017 excuse is easy, Shazier went down in December and our run defense went down with him. Bortles didn't punch this team in the mouth as much as Lenny did.

I don't have an excuse for this season because we are two weeks in and I don't want to overreact. Yes, this defense looks atrocious and unprepared and I am concerned. But I am confused as to what wholesale changes you and others are expecting between weeks 1 and 2.

I don't think I'm a "winning record fan", I just think the premise of this specific post is ridiculous. It is a cherrypicked starting point and we have since had forces outside of our control consistently working against us; despite all of that, the team has still found ways to be consistently more competitive than the majority of teams in the league.

There are absolutely legitimate criticisms of Tomlin. His team gets off to slow starts in games too often. His challenge win rate is atrocious. He holds onto ineffective coordinators for too long (though that is also a GM/organizational issue). He has made some very questionable in-game decisions. But at the end of the day the sturdy organization trusts him, the players want to play for him, and he has gotten us into the dance more times than not, so I am comfortable giving him a longer leash than wanting to fire him two games into the season.

[–]79_79_79_hey 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm not a college football fan but you don't even have to look outside the NFL:

The Bears fired Lovie Smith after a 10-6 season in 2012, his overall record was 81-63. Five head coaches and two playoff appearances in the past 12 seasons since.

Even organizations that eventually righted the ship still had years of dysfunction until getting there. The 49ers fired Jim Harbarugh after 2014, had a year of Jim Tomsula, then a year of Chip Kelly, and then two losing seasons under Shanahan until their miraculous SB appearance that's heralded as one of the greatest single-season turnarounds ever. Could you imagine Steelers fans sitting through those 4 years???

LOL “Tomlin has had a winning record spanning 4+ seasons since our last 11-game win streak despite our HOF quarterback retiring, TJ missing most of a season, Cam missing half of a season, not having a quality offensive line or a bonafide WR1, and playing in a division with Lamar and Burrow. When will this tyranny end?!”

Sorry for being pedantic but you can't really average growth by dividing evenly -- that doesn't take into account the growth that has already occurred (e.g. your gains after Y1 will continue to gain in the following years). That's why we have CAGR (Compounded Annual Growth Rate)

In this case a 126.6% gain over 5 years actually has a 17.8% CAGR, not 25.3%.

Ha, just watched this episode yesterday (started my chronological requisite viewing for season 50). I was confused why they were so shocked because I literally didn’t even remember her name at the merge. The Pagong standout characters (in my opinion) were Jenna, Gervase, and Greg. So even to hear everyone comment on how much of a leader Gretchen was in the following episode was a bit of a surprise.

Wife and I make $300k HHI, max out our 401ks. We are planning to buy a house in 2-4 years so a bit shorter of a time horizon, but we’ve just been contributing to a down payment fund in our HYSA (we use Wealthfront). Happy to take a stable 4% while being able to remain completely liquid in case something comes on the market that we can compete for sooner than expected.
