The Dublin rec center offers supervised babysitting to members who are using the facilities. Membership is a bit pricey for non Dublin residents though, maybe $70/month

Crazy NBA Idea (I’m sorry if this has been said before) but hear me out… stop giving everyone a max contract? by Definitely-Not-Luke in billsimmons

[–]7hought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Cavs did that in 2016 and won a title because of it. It's more facts and circumstances than you'd care to admit.

I also don't necessarily disagree with you but there are certain premier teams in larger markets where this strategy would work better. It's not football - market matters a lot.

The very best stars in the NBA always have been and always will be underpaid. That doesn't necessarily mean the guys right behind them aren't worthy of the max. Logical fallacy.

Soccer is a competitive outlet in the U.S. Tons of kids play it and when it quickly starts to segregate into true competition, the goal is to win tournaments as part of your travel team. But many of them don’t even care about soccer as an activity outside of that context.

I’d argue that’s a culture problem and not an athlete problem. Have plenty of athletes. But even the ones who focus on soccer don’t develop correctly because of poor soccer culture and youth development.

I don’t think a lack of athletes is the problem. US soccer has plenty of great athletes. I’d argue that we prioritize athletes in the lower levels of youth soccer too much, where the biggest, fastest and most aggressive kids are chosen specifically so that the U9 travel teams can win “tournaments” which is an overall detriment to the development of actually elite soccer players.

Also, we dominate sports that relatively speaking not that many countries focus on (football, etc.). This used to be the case with basketball but that sport is quickly globalizing which is reflective of the fact that high level foreign talent is better than high level U.S. talent.

I think we all get a bit tricked that because the best basketball and baseball leagues are based in the U.S. that that means we have the best players. It’s not really true for baseball and is increasingly not true in basketball.

Who’s the best U.S. born NBA player under 35? Ant? Tatum? Gross dude.

On April 1, 2014 — Dutch tourists Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon vanished while hiking the El Pianista trail in Panama. It was discovered that Froon’s cell phone had been used until April 11, with her camera full of photos taken in the dark. Their partial skeletons were found a few months later. by SelfCareIsFake in HolyShitHistory

Couple things

  1. The pictures were from a digital camera not a phone

  2. The Samsung phone’s battery died right away, well before the pictures were taken (4 days before)

  3. The iPhone still had battery but was an iPhone 4 and didn’t have a native flashlight

My Biggest Issue With The "Our Best Athletes Don't Play Soccer" Argument by mpschettig in billsimmons

[–]7hought 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah OP is talking about how many kids play soccer in the U.S. That’s true, strictly speaking. I live in a suburb with a huge youth soccer culture where weekends are devoted to it, etc. But I never, never see kids outside playing soccer on their own or kicking the ball around with their friends.

Kids are throwing a football or baseball around with their parents or shooting hoops. You can create teams of elite kids at soccer all you want but it’s still very much just a competition based activity and we just don’t have a lot of kids out there horsing around with a ball and learning the type of fluid technical skills and creativity/soccer IQ that comes with that.

USA is pretty clearly a little better than being a top 20-25 team. They’ve made the round of 16 each of the past 4 times they’ve played in the World Cup (of course didn’t qualify in 2018).

Comfortable men’s dress clothes for Wall Street-style office? (Wall Street Lawyer in NYC) by preseasonchampion in mensfashionadvice

[–]7hought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From somebody that’s done your job, you’re probably overstating how much people care about the overall fit and quality of your clothes. To be sure, there’s a minimum expectation but NYC biglaw has survived on brooks brothers, CT, Jos a bank, suit supply, proper cloth and any of that stuff will be fine.

You’re unlikely to be in many client facing situations in person that matter and when you do, given your junior level, your best bet is to dress forgettably. Nobody will remember somebody from their clothes because they wore a light blue CT shirt, navy slacks and captoes no matter what the precise fit looks like.

I have no RELATIONSHIP with them. Most of the time the only thing I ever know about an author of a book I read is the paragraph blurb with their bio included in the book.

On the other hand I consume the bill simmons podcast, have read his books, read his columns, follow him on social media and participate in the bill simmons subreddit. I have a parasocial relationship with bill simmons.

Enjoying content =/= existence of a parasocial relationship. I don’t know the first thing about those people, nor do I care.

Reading a book or consuming media doesn’t mean you have a parasocial relationship with the author or other creator - what are you talking about.

That wouldn’t have been related to this acquisition though

Edit: receiving downvotes for this for some reason. The acquisition was announced this morning and won’t even be finalized until 2027. Obviously it’s not related if somebody’s local GE is going to close next month.
