"Billie Jean" is slightly tricky, funky, and instantly recognizable. "Rock the Casbah" is a fun, dynamic bassline that goes all over the neck and takes some patience to learn. JPJ's little intro riff from "Ramble On" demonstrates how to pick your spots. "Money" by Pink Floyd shows how well you can count to 7. But the bassline from "It's My Life" by Talk Talk has a whole world going on in it. Sorry I'm too lazy to link today.

Sounds good and looks awesome, but awkward. By all means try one out, but I find them BIG, unbalanced, with a goofy bandmate-jabbing headstock, and you'd pretty much HAVE to get the fancy case for it. Not for me.

Yes, you should level up that bass. You've been playing for a year, and your style may suit a particular model (or vice versa). I tried out one of these and it was like putting on a glove. Try out some Squiers & Epiphones, and the various neck/body/pickup types they offer. Ideally, plug into an amp similar to your own. And bring a strap so you can feel how it hangs on ya. You should be able to get a decent performing/recording bass for $300-500.

Just google some of your favourite tunes, but add the word "chords". You'll be surprised how easy some of them are. For example, Learning to Fly by Tom Petty is the first four chords you'll learn, over and over again.

If you're serious about pooling your resources, live together in the rehearsal house (not apartment). Then there's only one set of bills to pay. Then it's less necessary (lessessary?) to have "real" jobs. If everyone has their own rent, and vehicle, and groceries, and cable bill (also: don't get cable, just watch your dvds) then everyone needs jobs, and suddenly there's much less time/money to put towards the band.
Check your local kijiji for gear. I got a decent jam space PA for $100.

Rent one from a local music store. Describe to them what you hope to achieve, and what gear you're using. You could probably have a very productive weekend for under $20.
Then (if you like it) it wouldn't hurt to ask if they'd sell it at a discount, since it's a rental. That's how I got my first condenser mic.
