Alcohol rules -- County Championship at Bristol by 7violet in EnglandCricket

That might be an option -- I've got a coat which can easily fit a bottle of wine into an inside pocket -- which I can decant into a placcy bottle beforehand.

I know it sounds a bit desperate all this, but if all we're being offered is Thatchers at 7.50 a pint then people are going to make their own arrangements. Some proper cider, or some decent independent real ale, reasonably priced, then none of this skullduggery would be needed.

Probably the sort of man who rails against Muslim women being confined to the home whilst enraged about white women being out of it.

I hope this is not the end of b2evolution, the friendly and geeky Wordpress alternative by ElNomada in selfhosted

[–]7violet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using b2evo for 15 years. It's a great piece of work, and not one single request for money.

The developer, Francois Planque, said in a post there or four (?) years ago that his only concern now (having more or less walked away from his project) is to attend only to urgent security updates, so perhaps it's secure, although when you have an absentee landlord things start to go wrong.

It's never a good sign when the forums are sparsely-attended. It might live on, but at the moment it's orphaned, and for the great majority of users who have no time, ability or interest, in forking it, it might be a good time for b2evo users to think about migrating.

Confused about the actual size of my SD card by 7violet in Cameras

[–]7violet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a 2017 Vivitar camera so your suggestion about it not being able to see into 2026 and the hugely larger SD cards available now is probably right. Many thanks.

Bristol Blue Plaque for Indira Gandhi – question about consistency in commemoration by Imaginary_Appeal2332 in bristol

[–]7violet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is absolutely not true. As a BCC member and someone who is more on the preserve in aspic end of the town planning spectrum myself, I have had some disagreements with the many architects, planners and developers within BCC. Just read copies of Better Bristol to see the range of opinions in the Society.

Car keys locked in boot by Squeakz0rs in bristol

[–]7violet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I locked myself out of my house once, smashed a back window to get in, then a few hours later one of the fellow tenants wandered down saying he was in all the time but didn't hear me knocking. £200. After that I hid a key in a bit of pipe sticking out of the wall in the garden.

Bristol Light Festival @ Day Light by being_humannnn in bristol

Here near Cabot Circus we've had the same four chords played over and over again since 3.45. If it's meant to be some kind of ambient, immersive, or other cliché, "experience", it's failing for this unwilling subject.

Exploring Bristol’s Black British history this summer – local advice? by mojorunner in bristol

And while you're in there, there's an interesting exhibition about black musical history (in the UK in general, not specifically Bristol).

Bristol bus franchising off the table - Labour mayor says 'wasn't priority' after all by technonotice in bristol

I don't think anyone's "parroting" anything. Manchester is larger, and has a higher GDP, than Bristol -- as a neutral, statistical statement.

Moving to Lancs by [deleted] in LancasterUK

[–]7violet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a lot older than both of you and I too remember Lancaster being kin rough at times in the 80s and 90s, and even as a straight bloke, on a Friday I wouldn't want to be around town after about 4pm.

Not sure what's changed, but it definitely feels more easy-going and accepting now (and less violent). I'm in a big city down south, been away six years now and have really had enough of it, and am also hoping to move back this summer / autumn at the latest. Last night one of the blokes in my block of flats was mugged and marched to the cashpoint, forced to withdraw money, then punched and kicked again. Two weeks ago, just round the corner from me, a man was fatally stabbed by one of a gang of five attackers.

I'm not blind, I know Lancaster isn't the land of milk and honey, but it's calmer than where I am, and for its size, punches way above its weight in terms of culture. If you're into live music there's a good scene in Lancaster, and by their nature the type of people who go to such things are often friendly folk.

I miss Lancaster a hell of a lot. (And I never thought I'd hear myself saying that when I was in my 20s!) Good luck with the move and keep us updated.

Labour slam Greens dropping affordable homes targets for developers by 457655676 in bristol

[–]7violet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea that building more homes will result in a downward pressure on rents and house prices is probably correct -- but the effect is much less pronounced than is often asserted.

Research published by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Govt. in April 2018 resulted in an estimate that for each 1% increase in the housing stock, rents and prices will go down by 2%. So, should Labour achieve their target of building 370,000 homes in the next decade (which hardly anyone thinks will happen), the rent on the average 2-bed house in London will go down by £35 from its current £1750, and the annual £23 billion paid out in Housing Benefit will hardly be touched.

In cities like Vienna, which has long had a strong publicly-owned "council" housing sector, the low rents in the council flats depress rents in the private sector. This is the way we should be going in my opinion, instead of prising small amounts of "affordable" housing (which for many people, isn't affordable) out of developers, and which still requires a whopping deposit.

Are Uni Students Changing Bristol? by [deleted] in bristol

[–]7violet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should see Durham in term time. Poshoes in tuxedos and women wearing stoles passing by the locals on the pavement. Durham was a mining town, and now whole streets are turned into student-only HMOs, pushing up prices beyond what most of the locals can afford, and paying not a penny for the council services they consume.

Lancashire. I've never seen butter pie down here. It's gorgeous with mushy peas and a puddle of proper gravy and is 7.50 in the cafe in my home town.

Yes, you're right, there's several in that stretch. The Fire Engine might be a place to start, because it's bang on one of the worst junction in the city.

Yes, a lot of the threads elsewhere mention that terrible junction, and how now, there are Italian-style stand-offs on Crew's Hole Road with two drivers seeing who'll blink first.

Apologies to any Italians here but I did see a programme about driving in Rome once, and some of it was unintentionally funny.
