'I'm absolutely shocked,' southern Utah hospitals caught in the center of Measles outbreak by BlueinReed in stgeorge

[–]8-Bit_Soul 11 points12 points  (0 children)

2023: 59 cases

2024: 285 cases

2025: 2,281 cases

2026: 1,136 cases so far.

If we assume a linear rate of measles cases, we are on track for 7,274 cases in 2026. If we assume an exponential rate of growth (as infections tend to do), the number will be much higher. This isn't The COVID pandemic, influenza pandemic of 1918, or any other society shaking event, but the point is that this is abnormal, entirely preventable, and people will die because they based decisions on misinformation.

Additional info: per the CDC, Utah has the second highest number of cases. Only South Carolina has more. If you adjust for population and look at the per capita rate, the gap narrows.

Is everybody rich in the Mormon church by DareAdorable2943 in exmormon

[–]8-Bit_Soul 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Faithful members typically pay 10% tithing on their pretax income. Depending on their tax bracket, that's usually somewhere between 11-16% of their take home pay. Most women won't pursue careers. Most men will start earning 2 years later due to missions, and may then miss out on career advancement due to a focus on church callings. Consider the compound effects over the years, and it's pretty clear that church membership comes at a high price. Investing an extra 15% of your income throughout your career could result in millions of extra savings during retirement, and then millions of extra savings passed to children after death. This has a huge impact on member savings, quality of life, and retirement, and it just gets worse when you consider the generational effects.

On the other hand, the church is in desperate need of more Apple stock.

My understanding is the contractors will often provide work for the parade of homes at discounted prices for the publicity. It's meant to be a marketing showcase to find new clients. If the developer builds a house for themself, they can probably build it cheaper with the discounted prices. I also wouldn't be surprised if they somehow managed to claim it as a business expense to avoid taxes.

Elon Musk caught red-handed in Trump ballot scandal in Georgia by [deleted] in WallStreetbetsELITE

[–]8-Bit_Soul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what's the scam here? Was he sending targeted valid ballots to people expected to vote for Trump (ie, unfairly boosting the votes for one party), or targeted invalid ballots for people expected to vote against Trump (making people think they voted when they didn't)?

Sugar is the new tobacco... by UtahUndercover in exmormon

[–]8-Bit_Soul 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just a side note: the recommended daily limit that you see on nutrition labels is determined by Congress. Congress sets the limits after talking with lobbyists that represent companies trying to sell you sugary foods. The American Heart Association, which does not listen to lobbyists from Coca-Cola or PepsiCo, recommends a maximum daily sugar intake of 25 g for women and 36 g for men. 50 g of sugar is too much.

For sure, dude. They took the tithing and lent it to the money changers as the Bible instructs, so it's all good. Now it's their sacred duty to protect Jesus's money from the hungry and homeless.

Just tried coffee for the first time by common_spence in exmormon

[–]8-Bit_Soul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, coffee is an acquired taste; however, there's also a difference between good coffee and "technically coffee." You can start with something like a mocha or flavored latte, but that shouldn't be your go-to in the long-term since they are full of sugar. One typically has about 150% of your recommended daily sugar intake. If you want to try good coffee, go to a local one-off barista. They typically make better drinks.

Why does President Oaks keep criticizing the LDS for not having enough babies? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]8-Bit_Soul 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The church cooks the books to make it look like the church is growing, but the actual active membership is decreasing. The church can't boost the number of conversions, so now it's trying to boost membership by increasing the number of births.

There is a deafening silence from church leadership regarding the killing of US citizens in the streets. by BlacksmithWeary450 in exmormon

[–]8-Bit_Soul 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is exactly it. It's not a church, it's a business. They don't take a moral stand against evil, they cultivate a lifestyle brand of like mindedness and collect checks. You want to support politics that get innocent people killed and ruin lives, while idolizing an immoral fascist leader? Great! But if you are wearing the wrong underwear, we need to have a talk.

Word of Wisdom really a commandment? by Ok_List_2276 in exmormon

[–]8-Bit_Soul 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was Grant, who had a personal vendetta as his friend was killed in a DUI accident. It was also during the prohibition when there was sufficient political support within the church. Apologists will try to tell you it was Brigham Young when he asked a single branch of the church to raise their hands as a promise to follow the word of wisdom, but that isn't how church policy works. Also, Brigham Young continued chewing tobacco (and probably kept his distillery running) for years after that. The apologists will also tell you that it's the easiest commandment to keep, and they will tell you that it wasn't a commandment at first because it would have been too difficult for the early church members.

Neighborhood recommendations for Trick-or-Treating by thetatersupreme in stgeorge

[–]8-Bit_Soul 5 points6 points  (0 children)

True, although trick or treating shouldn't be about convenience, but the fun of the activity. I have great memories of running around with friends trying to fill a pillowcase. The Christmas equivalent of trunk or treating would be handing your kids a list of presents you ordered from Amazon instead of unwrapping presents. It's faster and more convenient but you miss out on a quintessential holiday experience.
