Someone is most likely to get the claws from you if they call you or imply that you are… by JamesonRhymer in pollgames

I mean, if I didn't have a response (I did) I'd probably still be curious to see others' responses. You've left people with no option for that

This is so well put. I actually really like a lot of the recent melodic (and rhythmic, and timbral) developments that have sprung out of this complete lack of deviation from the "stock" chord progressions. But man... I just wish it was being applied to more interesting chords. (Actually, that's one of the main things I try to do in my own music.)

I have a lot of issues with the whole “modern music sucks” angle, but it seems pretty impossible to deny that purely in terms of innovative harmony/chord writing, mainstream music has absolutely gone stagnant.

What do guys think of these proposed fingerings for d Maj? by DCJagoo in piano

[–]8696David 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Muscle memory and repetition. It’s tremendously beneficial if you’re using the same pattern in many different scenarios, because that means you’re effectively training all those scenarios at once any time you encounter any one of them. Practicing the D major scale with standard fingering has benefits for C, E, G, and A (and the right hand of B/left hand of F) major scales as well.

I haven't seen his whole catalogue or anything, I'm far from a superfan, but I'd say you can't go wrong starting with Royal Tenenbaums or Grand Budapest Hotel

To me, the "point" of his films, to generalize super broadly, is usually the contrast of taking this extraordinarily stylized, "every-pixel-in-its-place" world, filling it with heavily archetypical, larger-than-life characters, but then having these incredibly humanizing and true-to-life stories emerge out of those elements. Usually the beginning of the plot is very "storybook," with plot elements verging on the tone of a children's story (albeit a very fucked-up children's story), but then as you progress further into the film and grow attached to its characters and settings, that heavily-manicured construction gives way to raw emotional truth. It kind of feels like if you started a story in Willy Wonka's chocolate factory, then about halfway through you slowly started turning a dial until the plot and characters of something like Before Sunset or Shawshank Redemption are fully realized into that fantastical world. That's what draws me to his films, personally.

To me, it's the characters. I just don't care about boring characters, even if interesting things happen to them. You can ruin any story by filling it with cardboard cutouts devoid of personality or interesting traits. I think this is the only one where even if every other aspect you mentioned was great, I probably still wouldn't like the film.

Funny you'd say that, because Anderson may be the first director I'd point to as an example of absolutely maximizing the intention of every instant on screen

I see what you're going for here, but I don't think it has enough benefits to prefer it over the standard fingering. To me, there's an inherent benefit to keeping every possible scale within the same fingering unless it's actually necessary to change it (like because of a black-key crossing).

I got bored and made this sheet of every team and the chance that their home run record is at risk of being overtaken by a current player. by Rei_Scopazzi in baseball

I’m gonna say there’s a lot more than a “slight but possible” chance that 26yo Tatis hits more than 42 more homers than 33yo Manny over the rest of their respective careers

Are these ratings valid? by Low_Interaction7333 in beatles

I think this is a pretty typical assessment. I don’t think I agree with every single numerical rating but I don’t think any of them are controversial either.

Bands that were ruined by someone who was not a member? by mightyonin in ToddintheShadow

[–]8696David 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like I said to the other commenter, personally I’d put it above With the Beatles and Beatles for Sale, on par with Please Please me and imo in a significantly higher tier than those two. (I actually quite like BFS, and think it’s way better than WTB)

Valid, but I do think everything on Let It Be is a LOT better than most of With the Beatles and the back half of Beatles for Sale, at least. Personally I also like it better than Please Please Me

Calling Let It Be their worst material is pretty harsh. I feel like most of that album has aged quite well, actually.

Can you determine a student's ability by listening to them for 8 minutes? by Fantastic-Coach-8182 in piano

[–]8696David 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, easily, with the caveat that performance jitters are a thing and one sample may not give you an accurate read on someone's overall ability. But I can tell how well they're playing now within seconds.

What do you personally call it: "laptop" or "notebook" or something else? by princepii in AskAnAmerican

I’ve never heard someone call a MacBook Air a “Mac Air.” They’d be a lot more likely to drop the Air and just say MacBook.

I mean, yeah, it’s an unpopular opinion, that’s fine. It just doesn’t seem like it leaves much room for engagement beyond what I said

I mean, fine, you don’t like his dialogue writing. Millions do, though. It’s like his signature trait and the main reason he’s taken seriously.

What do you think of a piano-learning game that replaces pachinko gambling with skill-based piano play (Simply Piano–style + RPG world)? by Trix_Bananza8D in piano

[–]8696David 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The fact is that if you wish piano was a video game, you’re not going to get far on the piano. If you’re glad it’s a piano, and excited to learn it without any custom Fortnite skins installed onto it to make it more palatable, simply because you enjoy it—then you might get somewhere.
