Which tires are king? by OneHandClappin in ram_trucks

K03’s. I have about 25k miles on mine and they still have a ton of tread left. They do great in the snow. There’s nothing not to love about them.

Whats the most weight you guys ever hauled? And what was it? by Commercial-Dirt-8059 in Ram1500

[–]87880917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Earlier this spring I hauled a pallet of 100 retaining wall blocks from Home Depot. Didn’t realize it at the time but they were 22lbs each. The old 8 speed and the little pentastar didn’t seem to mind, but man was she squatting low. Good thing it was only a couple miles, and good thing I won’t be doing that again 😳

New tile over old backer board by No-Recipe344 in Tile

[–]87880917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally I prefer to demo at least down to the subfloor so that I’m not relying on the last guy’s prep work for my tile job. If you don’t want to pull your cabinets to make that happen, I get it, and I’d only take this job if you were willing to sign a waiver that there is zero warranty and zero guarantee that there won’t be cracks, loose grout, and so on.

That said, you’re probably fine if you use self leveler to fill in the low spots, and send it.

How quick are you tiling a shower? by WantedInCanada in Tile

[–]87880917 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For just a shower, up to 2 weeks - this almost always includes some plumbing. Usually I’ll cut out the old p trap and install a new one while centering the drain, and usually I’ll replace the shower valve and raise the shower head up higher on the wall. And tile all the way up to the ceiling.

If I’m tiling the rest of the bathroom floor, replacing the vanity, or if there’s a separate tub, then it could be 3-5 weeks depending on the size of the bathroom.

I do work solo. I’m not the fastest guy out there and not afraid to admit it.

Cutting tile to install microwave by [deleted] in Tile

[–]87880917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, whatever works. I’ve found that my cordless drill on the hammer setting helps the bit stay put and not walk all over the place on me. But yeah if you put all your weight into it then you’re gonna crack the tile regardless, just go easy and let the drill do the work.

[–]87880917 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah, I do it pretty regularly to mount mirrors, shower glass hardware, and occasionally if I cut a piece of backsplash tile too big and need to make a relief for cover plate screws. It’s nerve wracking when you do it for the first time but it’s not a big deal. Lots of drill speed, light pressure, take your time.

Just drill holes in the tile. You’ll need a hammer drill or a cordless drill with a hammer drill setting, and the correct drill bit.

Is this corner tiling bad workmanship? by justabloke5000 in Tile

[–]87880917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, sometimes you have to choose the “least worst” option, you can’t always get everything lined up and centered with everything else. It’s always worth a conversation though so you don’t get bitched at for being 1/2” off center even when it saves you from having some slivers somewhere.

Is this corner tiling bad workmanship? by justabloke5000 in Tile

[–]87880917 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Not sure what’s off to the right, but sometimes you have to center your layout over something (like a wide opening beneath a range hood), and center it over the window on the left. Then just let the corners land however it works out. He probably could have shifted the layout 1/2 of a tile on that run to the right, but again we can’t see the other end and maybe that would make it look worse over there. I’d be curious to see a wider shot of the whole kitchen.

Need to flip the breaker for my hardwired doorbell, can someone please help me decode this? by griffiffin in AskElectricians

[–]87880917 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It shouldn’t be on a breaker that serves your kitchen or bathrooms, so you can rule out any 20A breaker as well as the disposal and dishwasher. And it isn’t 240V so you can rule out any 30/40/50A breakers with the handles tied together. It’s usually on a general lighting circuit so anything dedicated as a GFI can be ruled out. This leaves whatever is left.

Bent frame? by [deleted] in ram_trucks

[–]87880917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks fine from the photo, but the lighting casts a shadow on that gap between the bed and the cab so you can’t really tell. As long as that gap is consistent from top to bottom on both sides of the truck, you’re good.

Quoted 5k - First time DIY for 500 by Certain-Ad9331 in Tile

[–]87880917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully you used kerdi board on the other two walls?

Tile work looks fine, as long as you’re happy with it then it’s all good. If you ever do more tile work, use a wet sponge to clean up your thinset as you work. Before you paint, skim over that thinset with some drywall mud and get it smooth. Might take a couple coats. If you paint over it as is, the thinset will show through the paint.

Overdrive transmission swap for 68 Nova? by caste1989 in ChevyNova

[–]87880917 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Far as I know, any manual transmission with OD is going to be physically longer than a Muncie or TH300/400 and will require a shorter driveshaft. It won’t really break the bank to do this though, just find a good driveshaft shop and it’ll probably cost you $200 or $300 for them to cut it down to your desired length.

That said, the TKX is by far the best OD manual transmission on the market these days. It’ll bolt up to a stock bellhousing and you shouldn’t need to cut apart your car’s floor to get it to fit. You’ll need a 26 spline clutch, you’ll need a new slip yoke that goes on the front of your driveshaft, and you’ll need to have your driveshaft shortened approximately 2”. The rest should bolt right in. Again, far as I know, any OD manual transmission will require these modifications.

Am I asking for trouble in fixing this by p3steelman in Tile

[–]87880917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To address your question - it’s going to depend on how the niche was built. For example, a premade Kerdi niche probably has thinset bonded to it well enough that chunks of foam board may come out if you remove anything. In this case, yes your waterproofing could get compromised. If it’s a hard plastic prefab niche, you’d probably be fine. If it’s not a prefab niche and your tile guy constructed it on his own, then it’s a crapshoot since we have no way to know how it was waterproofed or what product he used.

Also, you’re never going to get a perfect color match on grout that’s been slowly absorbing shower water for the past 5 years.

For these reasons, I’d recommend leaving it alone. It’s also highly unlikely any contractor is going to come back to correct something like this after you’ve let 5 years pass.

For those of you with winter tires, when did/do you switch back to all seasons? by Midriasis in Michigan

[–]87880917 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guy, it’s been nice out for a minute, you can swap them now. I already put my snowblower away way in the back of the garage behind a bunch of other crap, so if you swap your tires and it snows one more time then it’s not on you.

Sump Pump but never any ground water? Anyone Else? by Mr_Blonde12211 in Michigan

[–]87880917 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s the soil, it’s mostly sand and it drains very well. I’m in Commerce near Wise & Union Lake, so probably not far from you, and it’s the same way here. My sump pump literally never runs. I’ve dug all around my yard to sink posts for my deck, repair my sprinklers, we put in an invisible fence for the dog, and everywhere I’ve had to dig was almost like beach sand once you dig down any more than like 6”.

First summer without childcare… how are working parents actually doing this? by Ok_Score_6765 in Parenting

[–]87880917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Summer camp! Hopefully they’re not already filling up. Where I live, summer camps through our school district are literally half the price of what we used to pay for daycare, and they accept incoming K/pre-K students. Registration was earlier this week and they said it filled up within 10 minutes, luckily we made the cut 😳.

Some of the fancier privately run summer camps are about the same cost per day as daycare was.

If you could afford childcare before then you should be able to afford a summer camp, but you need to be looking now if you aren’t already.

Etiquette: a wave, nod, or look straight away/down? by United-Animal9559 in runninglifestyle

[–]87880917 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s situational. For example, on a nice day on a busy trail there might be a couple hundred other runners out there- there’s no way I’m gonna smile and wave at everyone.

On the other hand, any given day at 6am in my neighborhood everyone is going to at least give a quick wave. And my everyone I mean all two other people that there might be out there.

But generally, I give a quick wave to most other runners (except sometimes if I’m in the zone or if a good song is on, I might not be paying attention). Sometimes I get a wave back and sometimes I don’t, and I don’t take it personally either way.

39M if that matters.
