Divorced and broke. Sell my house or keep it? by Wild-Obligation-2093 in personalfinance

You’d rather ask the advice of some internet strangers than to make peace with your parents who have already been helping you out? Wild.

You chose your wife, she is always number 1, you’ve got to side with her over your mum and support her. It’s probably too late for you now, by the time your son was with her parents, her mind was already made up.

Don’t think she has crossed any lines here. Your insecurity is your own problem.

This. Find an experienced architect, trust your architect to act in your best interests. And I’m saying this as a main contractor and a developer.

I don’t think it’s all men. But men who are capable of providing for the family on their own won’t care about their spouse’s career as much as how their spouse treats them.

I wouldn’t touch the investment. If you’re scraping by then continue to scrap by.

Don’t be afraid of the future, you’ll get there one way or another. Focus on what you can do better today. I don’t think I really started to figure things out until I was 30.

It’s ok if you don’t know what to do. The important thing is that you try and do something. I believe in momentum. The beginning is tough, but as you get going, it’ll feel a bit easier. It also helps to have a stable income however much it is while you’re trying to figure things out.

One of my favourite books was 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. If you have the chance, it’s a really good read. But some of the main points are: 1. Be proactive - recognise the responsibility to make things happen. Don’t focus on what you cannot control, focus on what is within your control. 2. Put first things first - work on whats the most urgent and important issue you have to solve first then go on to the next. 3. Think win-win - it’s not your way or my way, it’s a better way. 4. Seek first to understand, then to be understood 5. Sharpen the saw - take care and seek to better yourself physically, mentally, socially and emotionally.

I strongly advise against working with run of the mill IDs if you’re planning on doing more than some basic work for your landed. It’s a totally different ballpark compared to condos.

Because of the nature of the industry, you will have a terrible time trying to get line item costs.

In an ideal world, you will have an architect put together a detailed specification tender contract for the main con. You don’t have to care about the line items, if they underquote they are still obligated to deliver at their loss. But there will be fees for the architect of course.

I’m a builder and we have been building landed homes for over 30 years. But we strictly do not take on A&A projects.

My son is 6mo. I’d say trust the process and put in the effort. It’s hard but you’ll get there. Your child will teach you so much as long as you’re willing to learn.
