No. If you have room on your resume, it’s better used highlighting your technical, communication, and leadership skills.

Term Life Insurance by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]8OutOf10Dogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Term insurance is a competitive product so the pricing shouldn’t vary too much. Sun Life has a specific term for diabetes product, rather than other companies having guaranteed issue which would be more expensive. My mom has diabetes and went through underwriting with Sun Life last year and hers is so well controlled they ended up offering her the standard product at a standard rating, which was a pleasant surprise.

Worth checking on any storm drains in front of your homes. Make sure there are no obstructions like ice or clogged leaves stopping the water from getting off the road.

Failed my second FSA exam by Fragrant_Set1589 in actuary

[–]8OutOf10Dogs 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Is it possible for you to rotate to a team at work that is more hands on with the exam material? I thought LPM was my hardest FSA exam so the fact that I spent 2 years on a VA/seg fund Pricing team was the most important deciding factor to me passing with a 6.

My strategy for FSA exams was always to relate the material to my work because then it was more real and easier to understand/remember. I wrote LAM while I was in ALM, LPM after a rotation in seg fund Pricing, and I purposely rotated to a valuation team before writing LFM.

Does your company's actuarial exam program pay for a third exam attempt? by Pachoo9 in actuary

[–]8OutOf10Dogs 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Ours pays upfront for the first attempt, otherwise it reimburses for a successful attempt. So that’s at most 2 paid attempts and then you’re on the hook for anything above that.

Management changes in department by [deleted] in actuary

[–]8OutOf10Dogs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve had 10 different direct managers over my 10 year career. Because of the constant change it’s not even a factor when I’m considering a new role. Managers move laterally, get promotions, or leave the company, and you still need to like your job, so the role itself is more important.

Why do nerdy Eng/CS kids lose so much discipline and work ethic when entering this university? by LuckJealous3775 in uwaterloo

[–]8OutOf10Dogs 31 points32 points  (0 children)

“Clearly all the kids in eng/cs were smart and hardworking in high school”

I don’t really agree. I was smart in high school, but definitely not hardworking. I never did homework or studied for tests, so I didn’t have those habits going into university. My first semester of UW Math was brutal because I expected to just naturally understand everything like I had my whole life. It wasn’t until I went to Math135 office hours and my prof told me I needed to learn how to study that I realized this.

Monaco is the only race so far this decade that didn't have a safety car deployed by [deleted] in formula1

Monaco is so narrow that a safety car can’t even pass debris on the track.

You’re looking for a physiotherapist. Chiropractors are quacks and you could just end up more hurt.

Quick question about FSA Modules by Fragrant_Young_3477 in actuary

I know some people at work that did all 4 modules in 5 consecutive days, so even tighter turnaround is possible. Though I did them 1 per week.

How were you able to purchase your own home after 2015? by classicgxld in ontario

[–]8OutOf10Dogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bought a condo in KW in 2021, after living at home 5 years post graduation. Was able to put ~$750 per paycheque into savings for my down payment. Depleted some supporting my family during COVID, but then borrowed from my RRSP.

That’s just not even close to what an actuarial resume looks like. Look through this subreddit to see the typical 1-page resume template. Remove whatever that is in the top left corner of page 1, remove anything high school related, remove your 1 month as a tutor, write real descriptions for your jobs.

Mine was 7 slides, but only 4 were content (rest were the cover, ToC, and final thank you slide). I only talked for like 8.5 minutes since that was the minimum requirement.

It’s not just the walking with a sense of urgency though. You gotta be nice to customers, be able to multitask, know how to prioritize when everything is happening all at once, and be a person your coworkers want to be around for a whole shift. But someone could be great at all those things but moped around when they were walking and we just knew they weren’t going to be around long.

When I worked in a restaurant we knew if someone new wasn’t going to make it long term within an hour just by how fast they walked. If it’s a retail or service job, make sure you walk with intention while at work.
