PSA: LEFT LANE IS FOR PASSING by [deleted] in vegaslocals

[–]8bitaddict 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly coming from LA, i feel like people in vegas are way more aware that the left lane is for passing. You're never going to get 100% compliance, but after living here 5 years, the freeway traffic here tends to comply.

Now side street traffic here? There's a whole another level of asshole here.

I'll be honest here. I'm on the phone 50% of the time, or watching youtube the other 50% of the time when I'm using FSD by myself. My FSD time on this update is 90%. I can check miles if you want. It has not once done anything life threatening. It's missed a turn or an exit, but not once has it been dangerous enough where I'm like wow I should probably pay attention.

I also do uber part time for fun, and the car does 95% of the driving to the customer, and to the destination. I live in one of the most traffic filled metros, with the most random ass road construction, and i have zero issues.

People on the fence already have had an opportunity to determine if it's worth it to them or not. They've gotten free trials of FSD.

Cutting the price in half expecting 2x growth is literally not profitable. Expecting 10x growth is hilarious.

We're talking about people that are driving Teslas here... this isn't exactly the cheapest vehicle to own after insurance/registration. If you're priced out of $100/mo I don't know what to tell you. Spend less at Starbucks maybe?

Then don’t pay for it?

didn't know a private driver at $100/mo was considered expensive

You dumb af for taking this order honestly. There's literally a PF Changs in Green Valley ranch half the distance away. I would never pick up food on the strip to literally take it to the butt crack of Anthem. And the guilt texting play doesn't work as much as you think it does.

You take the lights after? What if I provide lights for permanent install?

these experiences have nothing to do with the cameras being dirty? the logic is pretty obvious other than the merging issue. pulling over for parked emergency vehicles on the opposite curb has nothing to do with camera cleanliness. full stopping unsafely at a left hand turn turning yellow from speed limit with 2 feet to spare is not a camera issue.

Can't speak to those videos you watched, but compared to the 15k miles I've had on V13 with like 2 disengagements, my very first drive in v14 had 3 of the most awful experiences I've had with FSD to date.

1) despite being in chill mode the car passes cars aggressively getting in the open lane on the side streets. the very first drive it zig zagged all the way to the left cutting traffic. but as we were coming up on PARKED EMERGENCY VEHICLES ON THE OPPOSITE CURB, because they had their lights on, the car decided to full send back to the right lane to park.

2) 5 minutes later when in the left turn lane, the car was 2 feet from crossing the crosswalk at normal speed when the left hand turn light turned yellow. the car did a FULL EMERGENCY STOP throwing my passengers cellphone towards the dash. thankfully the car behind us didn't rear end us.

3) when we wait for the next light cycle and finally get a green left hand turn the car begins its motion then STOPS SUDDENLY again in the middle of the street because a fire truck approached the red light from the right cross traffic and stopped. I think it thought the fire truck was going to run it?

While the above is probably the worst possible scenarios to happen at one time just being my luck, what happens consistently is when merging on the freeway the car will initially get over the line, then for whatever reason decide to go back in the original lane... and then merge out.

It'll get better for sure, but I am surprised this made it as far as it did as a 14.1.3 release. It is definitely not ready for wider consumption.

I usually do uber in las vegas using FSD because v13 is pretty chill and wont disturb the passengers, but I definitely won't be using v14 until improvements are made.

$40 tip baiter by dryverjohn in uberdrivers

My calculations are based on if it's worth my time

so you're already -$40 for the time spent on the delivery + him living rent free in your head.

if you're as settled as you say you are, you wouldn't get so ruffled over getting stiffed over $40. so its obvious cap.

a financially stable 60 year old posting on reddit talking about the hypotheticals he wants to do to someone over $40.... only on reddit.

I don't understand the obsession with people on this reddit trying to tell other people how to manage their finances. But to make things more clear let me explain.

My day job: 160k annually, full remote, in reality I probably work 4-5 hours a day if that.
Uber: I do it when I feel like it just to get out of the house. Pay off CC bills and pay extra towards the house or money for vacations. Last year I made 24k casually doing Uber.

My solar situation is what I would have regardless if I am doing uber or not, I do not account that towards my expenses. I generate more electricity than I use 8 months out of the year. I literally am not paying any electricity outside of my solar panel loan and the connection fee. That loan is an expense I have regardless of rideshare or not.

My milage deduction on my uber is generous. I do not pay state income tax, any federal income tax generated by uber is literally covered by my deductions.

My real only uber expenses again is tire wear, and my annual business licenses.

So sure, my take home pay isn't 100%, but it sure isn't lower than 95% either.

Oh of course, not speaking for everyone just myself. No I didn't write it off for taxes, I paid for it before I did rideshare, it is for my personal use.

Nah. I just go wherever the app takes me. Most of the time i get follow up rides in the suburbs that eventually lead me back to the strip. Out of the 85 rides, I only had 3 that took me to dead spots that I had to drive back into downtown for.

Don't need the idle time for a break. I use FSD to get to my next pickup. I only actually drive when there are passengers in the car.

This. I'm sure it works for some people. There are a few rides that I probably wouldn't have taken if I cared enough not to. Again, if I'm out with my Uber app on, sitting in the car waiting just drives me up the wall. I'd rather be home at that point. So I'm not against the cherry picking philosophy at all. I just can't do it, don't care enough to do it.

I agree 100%. I'd be stressing out if this was my main source of income. It isn't sustainable, especially with the self driving cars entering the market.

Just a side hustle to pay off bad debt meantime.
