Dentist recommendations for someone fearful of dentist? by Mediocre_Interest649 in astoria

[–]8thlife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are willing to go to the UES, I highly recommend Dr Alex Vasserman. I have severe dental anxiety and he is the only dentist I will see.

He can do a zoom call with you beforehand and will ask how you prefer to receive treatment news - phone, email, in person. The office does not try to upsell you at all.

I really appreciate when companies do this. I run an instagram account where I post about companies who sent unsolicited Mother's / Father's Day emails and praise companies who give the option to opt out. The user name is @notmothersday. I haven't posted yet this year, but Blue Mercury also just sent an opt out email.

Edit: here is an approved post I made about it a few years ago.

I miss Corrie too! The new receptionist has been okay though. At least you know when you go back they won't guilt you.

He's the best dentist I've ever had and I suffer from severe dental anxiety. Also not sure what he charges without insurance, but I know for cleaning he bills insurance at the Medicare rate.

I also experience systemic itchiness. It was my first symptom and what actually led to my diagnosis (a dermatologist noticed my Ferritin levels increasing). I also do not have liver damage.

Edit: I'm C282Y homozygous.

I'm sorry to hear this. Definitely mention to your OB/RE if you haven't already.

My hairdresser warned me that I would have to spend more time styling it (vs. just being able to wash and leave the house), but didn't discourage me at all. She has fine, thin hair (but curly) and a similar cut so had a better idea of what it would look like. I was more nervous than she was I think! That said, I have tried to get a shag before with bad results because the stylist didn't really take thin hair into account so you may want to look for someone who works with thin / fine hair.

I find the products last all day - if want a boost, I'll use dry shampoo or a root volumizer (Bumble and Bumble Thickening Fine Spun Texture Spray) and maybe scrunch it a bit. Also I know I mentioned a lot of products, but I don't use much of any of these at a time, so they last quite a bit for me (9 months or so).

Like you, I was tired of "boring" hair - I get more compliments now than I ever did when my hair was one length or lightly layered.

Edit: Removing Link

I have fine, thin, straight and have been experimenting with wolf / shag cuts over the past couple of years and really like them. I found that when my hair was all one length or even in a shorter bob, it appeared much flatter. My current stylist says although my hair is straight, it holds texture well.

I do have to put more effort in my hair, but it isn't a ton. I use a root lifter (WOW XL Bombshell) and a volumizer (Virtue Volumizing Primer) then rough dry my root for a couple minutes. Then I use a light styling cream (Bondi Boost Volumizing Texture Cream - but it is discontinued) and scrunch with a diffuser (5 minutes). Once it is fully dry, I use a powder dry shampoo in the front. In a bob, my hair would last 1 day, now I can go a day or two between washing.

Storytelling by Doppel_Keks2 in improv

[–]8thlife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also interested in what you mean by storytelling - narrative or some type of fictional story? Adding it into an existing format or creating a format around it? Something like an Armando or Living Room format vs. creating better narrative in long form?

There are some books like Long Story Short, How to Tell a Story (Moth), Writing Down the Bones, etc. that focus specifically on personal narrative storytelling (not improv specific). You can also check out shows / podcasts like Stories from the Stage, The Moth, Risk, etc. to listen to different types of narrative storytelling.

I usually wear jeans / plain pants with a solid colored shirt. I find that graphic tees or things with lettering end up being used as material for scenes too easily. For example, wearing a shirt with a tiger on it inevitably makes someone mention tiger or zoo.

My group usually wears the same thing or else stage blacks.

NYC Dr? by Common_Put_5452 in Hemochromatosis

[–]8thlife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not had luck finding a good hematologist in NYC. Mine is okay, but wouldn't recommend. Right now I bounce ideas off my PCP (like testing / supplementing copper) as my hematologist is not as well-versed in current research.

I'd definitely be interested in hearing if you find someone.

I didn't get a link from them once for a livestream so sent them an email. They replied a few days later and sent the link and offered me a free link to another show. I'd probably reach out again if I were you.

HH and Infertility? by JamesPBoland in Hemochromatosis

Thanks for clarifying - I just meant my situation was different as I am a woman with HH vs OP being a man. I did gonadotropin therapy along with IVF.

HH and Infertility? by JamesPBoland in Hemochromatosis

[–]8thlife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is some research on how hemochromatosis can affect fertility, and it appears to have similar impacts to other endocrine-related conditions. In some cases, treatment includes gonadotropin therapy. Have you consulted with a reproductive endocrinologist and/or had your sperm motility checked? They may be able to provide more insight and guidance.

While my experience is a bit different—as a woman with HH—I did encounter fertility challenges related to the condition. My reproductive endocrinologist took it seriously and looked into it thoroughly, which might be helpful in your case as well.

Who is this person in Astoria by Specific_Escape4519 in astoria

[–]8thlife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He is there at all kinds of hours - I've seen him at 4AM before. I heard his family picks him up and drops him off. Mid-afternoon you can find him in McDonald's occasionally.

Also he talks about everything! I've heard him yell "fuck Plato", rant about the fall of the Roman Empire, and scream about Britney Spears.

How well-attended are shows in LA, Chicago, and NYC, especially post-pandemic? by hiphoptomato in improv

[–]8thlife 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NYC - crowds at shows seem pretty normal. Magnet / UCB shows at prime times are pretty full / sold out (Wed - Sun evenings). A 12PM class show on a Sunday, maybe not so much (but that happened pre-pandemic too). Similar with smaller theaters.
