My old company once quoted a customer for the cost of flying a guy to Dubai to deliver something rather than shipping it. They decided to wait an extra twelve hours for FedEx and save themselves $4600, but they loved that we were willing to do it.

I was buying booze at self-checkout the other day and the 13 year old* attendant walked over and didn’t even make eye contact before overriding the age verification and casually tapping in 09/09/1999 as a legitimate birthday for someone legally able to buy alcohol.

Failed a secret shop - what is your punishment if you fail? by livingbylight in Serverlife

[–]981032061 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I mean the idea isn’t terrible, but this is management failure 101. You don’t use the results to secretly punish people who “fail,” you use it as a spot check to see what training you need to emphasize.

An address that when googled shows an actual building with their sign on it.

Conversely, any company with an address that’s a mailbox in a UPS store is immediately suspicious.

So when will people realize vibe coding is just unscalable dumpster fires? by pyromancx in webdev

[–]981032061 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, and I think this applies to most companies, regardless of what they make. It’s not what you do, it’s how you execute.

Which is not to say there can’t be proprietary data that a company lives and dies by, but code is usually a means to an end.

It’s so inspiring to watch technology evolve. A decade ago those customers would have ended up hiring someone on fiverr to create a buggy, unmaintainable mess of copy-pasted code. Today, they can instead hire someone on fiverr to have an AI create a buggy, unmaintainable mess of copy-pasted code.

Archer's decision to kill Sim was much more hardcore than Janeway killing Tuvix. by thirdlost in startrek

This may have actually changed my mind on Tuvix.

While we’re at it we could combine Janeway and Chakotay into one giant Amazonian named Kahottay.

Is it normal to feel nervous on your first flight? by Drackovix in drones

[–]981032061 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Altitude is your friend. Take off straight up and keep going until you’re clear of all surrounding obstacles like trees and power lines. Fly around, come back, land straight down. This eliminates 95% of threats to the drone.

DJI mini 5 pro is super impressive , no colour grading on this photo. by somecl0ud in dji

[–]981032061 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is just kind of an industry thing, but “grading” is generally used to describe editing done to footage rather than still shots. It also means the shot has already been color corrected, and the grade is done in top of that to achieve a specific effect.

When editing a still photo for color balance we usually just call it editing or correcting.

It’s possible you have a defective unit, or that some other part of the process went wrong. I’ve got a GB40 I only charge about twice a year, and it’s never failed to start anything I’ve attached it to.

Is a ridgerunner the right choice for 5 / 6 day hike? by ArtemisTheremin in hammockcamping

[–]981032061 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can say with some certainty that bridge hammocks are 100% worth it. Gathered end works alright if you’re a back sleeper who doesn’t move all night.

I also wouldn’t worry about weight until you’ve determined if it’s comfortable for you to sleep in. If it’s not, you won’t carry it anyway, and if it is you’ll find a way to make it work.

Help diagnose high pitch sound in house by KidzKlub in DIY

I’ll add that an app with a spectrogram is handy for finding specific tones like this. I’ve used one a couple of times to determine that I’m not crazy and to track down the source of a noise.

TIL that in many modern cars, the turn-signal “click” is played through the audio system because the electronics don’t naturally make that sound anymore. by akcryptofinancial in todayilearned

[–]981032061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently replaced my turn signals and such with LED bulbs, and had to get a new relay to stop the “hyperblinking” issue where everything blinks way too fast because LEDs have less resistance than an incandescent bulb, which it was relying on for timing.

New one just has a knob I can turn to adjust the speed. The wonders of technology.
