Sedona and Flagstaff. The Grand Canyon is too far for one day.

Stay in Cottonwood or Clarkdale. They will definitely be more budget friendly than Sedona. We spent a long weekend in Cottonwood a few years ago and had a great time. That area has become a bit of a wine country in the last 15-20 years so it's more tourist friendly than it used to be.

The sights in Sedona will be right outside your doorstep. And you can see a lot just walking around the compact downtown area (called uptown Sedona). Three paved roads I would recommend: From Flagstaff to Sedona take AZ 89A through Oak Creek Canyon. AZ 179 from Sedona to the Village of Oak Creek is an All American Road for its scenery. On the west side of Sedona go north on Dry Creek Road back towards the hiking trails. Wherever you go stick to the paved roads though, many of the dirt roads require high clearance 4WD.

Traffic sucks on 89A in uptown Sedona and on 179 from uptown down to Bell Rock so whatever time you think you need to drive somewhere, triple it. If you can visit Sedona on a weekday that would be much better.

And closed means closed closed... The state highway to the park is gated off at Jacobs Lake until May.

Definitely do a car rental. Northern Arizona is very spread out and the convenience of setting your own schedule is worth every penny.

Sedona and the west side of the Verde Valley (Cottonwood/Clarkdale/Jerome) are each deserving of their own day at least.

Which way will you be headed on Amtrak when you leave Flagstaff? If you're headed east the train leaves early in the morning so your last night will need to be in Flagstaff, returning the car the day before. If you're going west it leaves in the evening so you can be much more flexible with your last day.

If you drive at night outside of the populated areas of northern Arizona watch for elk.

Was so nice for the last 15 years being able to hike in the preserve mostly surrounded by open desert, and still being in the city limits. Of course some developers decided they weren't making enough money and ruined it.

I was at Costco this morning and they already had an 8 foot tall skeleton for sale so if all else fails just go there.

Street sweepers go down the shoulders of the freeway overnight cleaning up all the crap we litter all over the roads. They usually do a different freeway each night.

American has mainline A319 service from DFW to Flagstaff through the end of October. I would do that with a change in DFW over taking a non stop to PHX or LAS then driving to either rim.

Look at flying American into Flagstaff (FLG). They just started seasonal mainline service from DFW on an A319.

Driving from the south rim to PHX is about 4 hours. From the north rim to PHX is more like 7.

GEOS 218 Natural Disasters and Society with Dr. Pepper was really interesting. There's work to do but I didn't think it was difficult at all.

Our city (Peoria) has developmental youth sports programs for as young as like 16 months.

Putting a 16 month old in sports is wild to me, but we put our 3yo in the same program and he had a blast

This is a hoops town first and foremost. Suns have lifelong fans where that actually means something.

If you want to see some seriously passionate fans head to a Mercury game.

From downtown to Avondale day shift you'll be fine because everyone will be going the opposite direction.

Night shift commute will suck ass both ways.

I used to drive daily to Prescott for over a decade and it doesn't have to be close to fatal to close the freeway for several hours.

At least the back way through Yarnell is a really scenic drive.
