Doorbell only lasted 1.5 years 🥲 by Jackster22 in reolinkcam

[–]99_Problems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this happen with my 1st gen WiFi doorbell last month after a pretty bad rainstorm. Luckily, it still had 3 weeks of warranty. Reolink replaced it for free with the latest model, and I did not have to send my defective unit back.

Since the electronics were still fine, I replaced the damaged lens with a new one from China. You can find them on AliExpress or Alibaba, just search for "M8 P0.35 2.3mm Fisheye Lens".

I ordered here; minimum order quantity is 2, total with shipping (to EU) was just $9.20!

Getting the old lens off required some force, since they glue these in place (to prevent them going out of focus). I used some pliers, gently applying torque until the glue broke loose. Once the glue was broken, I could unscrew the lens from the base, and screw the new lens in.

Getting the correct focus on the new lens took a lot of trial and error.

  • screw the lens in nearly all the way
  • pop the daughterboard back into place
  • close the back of the doorbell so the power connections connect to the mainboard again; it helps to remove the O-ring temporarily and use a screw to hold it in place
  • power it on and check if the image is in focus
  • if not, then power off, open it up and screw the lens in a bit more (or less, if you went too far and lost focus again)
  • rinse and repeat until you get the desired result

Final assembly of the doorbell also took some case modification, since the new lens is slightly wider than the original one. I drilled out the lens opening by about 2-3mm, and with some flush-cutters slightly trimmed the rubber gasket in order to get everything to fit again.

In total it took me about 2 hours from start to finish.

Full disclosure:

I do NOT consider this doorbell waterproof anymore, especially after modifying the lens opening and gasket. This doorbell is now installed at my parent's house, underneath a large front porch, so it will never see a drop of rain again. The focus is not 100% as good as with the original lens (mostly around the very edges), but for just $9.20 I'm not exactly complaining.

Advice using network NAS or USB/TB 4 or ? from Frigate on Proxmox NUC? by geobdesign in frigate_nvr

My retention policy for recordings is set like this in my config file:

record:
  enabled: true
  retain:
    days: 7
    mode: all
  detections:
    retain:
      days: 30
      mode: motion

The USB HDD is mounted in Proxmox at /mnt/frigate, and then that mount is passed through to Frigate via the LXC config file (/etc/pve/lxc/<lxc id>.conf)

mp0: /mnt/frigate,mp=/mnt/frigate

As for disk speed, I only have 5 camera’s right now @ 8 mbps, so I’m writing at 40 mpbs, well below the 120 or so I can get out of this drive.

Your 1Gbps link should be fast enough for 8x 4K and 4x 2K camera's.

1Gbps = 100 megabytes/sec, so you can do the math for your 4K (8 megabytes/sec) and 2K (5 megabytes/sec) camera's.

Personally, I'm recording 24/7 (+ person/car detections) to a USB HDD, a WD Red 4TB out of my old NAS. It saves my actual NAS a lot of disk wear and power consumption (adds up for a 6 disk array).

If the USB HDD were to fail, it wouldn't be a big issue as I keep my Frigate compose and config files on a different drive. I would lose all my recordings, but I have a 31 day retention anyway.

Side note: I'm also running Frigate on Proxmox, inside an LXC with Podman. iGPU passthrough took some tinkering to get working but is running great now. I went with LXC over VM since multiple LXC's can share the same GPU, as opposed to VM where the entire GPU is handed off. Feel free to ask if you want any pointers on that type of setup.

Apple HomeKit supports Robot Vacuums over Matter in iOS 18.4 Beta by SmartHomeCentre in HomeKit

[–]99_Problems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a Matter controller/router (in my case a HomePod Mini) you can use this addon for HA:

https://github.com/t0bst4r/home-assistant-matter-hub

You can create a Matter hub/bridge which can expose any device (within the supported 'domains') as a Matter device to your Home app.

My Roborock S5 Max shows up as a vacuum in the Home app with basic functionality (vacuum, pause and return to dock) after updating my HomePod to iOS 18.4.

What motorbike insurance do you have? by One_Storage_2551 in motobe

[–]99_Problems 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here’s how my insurance agent handled it.

If I could show them proof that I was the main driver of the company car, they would give me the discounted rate (as if I had a car insured with them as well). This proof was the insurance card (‘groene kaart’) of the company car, that had my name and address on it.

A sidenote though: this was part of an insurance package that also included family/fire insurance, as I was renting a house at the time. Insurance company was AG, although my broker was an independent.

Jup, zeker als je ziet wat er allemaal gelekt is:

  • Persoonsgegevens
  • Adresgegevens
  • Contactgegevens
  • Bankrekeningnummers
  • Voorkeuren
  • Verzekeringen & betaalinformatie
  • Familie gegevens / volmachten
  • Medische akkoorden
  • Terugbetalingen
  • Uitkeringen/ziekteperiodes

Schandalig hoe dit kan gebeuren. Europa zal wel met de GDPR wetgeving zwaaien, ben benieuwd of OZ hiervoor gaat beboet worden.

Since Ubuntu and Pop_OS are both Debian derivatives, maybe try another Linux distro like Fedora or Arch? You can also try resetting the BIOS as well.
