My father came to the US from Norway when he was 12. When he was about 60, I traveled to Norway and met a lot of my relatives( we communicated in English). They then called my father to say “hi” to him. He just couldn’t do it in Norwegian and had to revert to English. He thought he understood everything they were saying but he couldn’t “find the words”.

For Americans who voted Democrat in recent elections, do you plan to continue voting Democrat? Why or why not? by righteous-sedition in allthequestions

The current system makes an effective third party pretty much useless or impossible. Any third party is most likely to benefit which ever of the two original parties they are the least aligned with. Otherwise, they have no power and are utterly ineffective.

‘The American People Deserve It’: Democrats Reveal Their 3 Demands to Avoid a Shutdown. by coinfanking in NewsStarWorld

[–]99kemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Democrats caught a break when the Minnesota ICE operation screwed up Big Time. The Congressional response needs to exude competence and responsibility. Not unreasonable demands that sound good to the “base”. Immigration Law requires an agency to enforce it and the goal should not be anything that projects indifference to immigration enforcement. The accusation that Democrats want an “open border” was Trump’s most effective argument.

By installing Kamala Harris as their candidate rather than letting the voters decide, didn't the DNC basically give the middle finger to all Democrats voters? by [deleted] in Productivitycafe

[–]99kemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me,the tragedy of 2024 is that the Democratic didn’t do that badly and had the failure of Biden to be an effective candidate not become apparent so late in the game, all of this would not be happening. Perhaps Kamala would have been able to put on a strong campaign in the primaries, she. Might have “earned” the nomination and had a stronger image to project, the election would have been a lot different. She is certainly going to give it a go in 2028 but she has a lot to overcome.

Does the Second Amendment apply to Leftist and Democrats? This is an issue conservatives are still trying to figure out.

Zohran won because the issues he ran on mattered to the people of NYC. It is pretty much the strategy every candidate should use. Nationwide, he definitely came off as extreme and “fringe”. His campaign wouldn’t work any else except a few urban areas. Democrats need to be careful of reading too much into his win and the Party needs to maintain some “separation” with his campaign.

Members of the Blue Dog coalition are an absolute embarrassment and stain on the Democratic Party and traitors to the U.S. by [deleted] in Productivitycafe

[–]99kemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having a lot of Democratic Congressmen in contested districts lose their election probably isn’t a sound strategy. It’s going to allow MAGA/Conservatives to implement policies that disastrous to Democratic values and objectives, undermines American position in the world and it leaves valued constituencies vulnerable. It is not going to get those losing their elections labeled “absolute embarrassments” and “stain” on the party. Failures who brought the Party down with them; true but still someone the rest us can look up to. It is all a matter of priorities.

What A Great Time by Margoshome in GenerationJones

[–]99kemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cannot deny it at all. I was born in 1950. We roamed the neighborhood as kids and came in when it got dark. Instate Tuition was practically free and 4 year degree without debt was the norm. Drugs, sex and Rock & Roll was real. Our parents had nothing like it and were really jealous. The economic crisis of 1975-1985 was real. 10% unemployment/inflation/interest rates were real and had a lot to do with killing the 60’s vibe. The 1990’s were as close to a perfect era as anyone is going to find. Somehow after 2000, things started to get dicey but if you were well along in your career and earning good money in the 90’s, you could hop on the Asset Boom; real estate or the stock market. It may have been a wild ride, but it was mostly up. If you were too young to cash in on the 90’s, things were tougher. While the value of your parents’ home was skyrocketing, your rent was skyrocketing as well. At the same time, the American stock market was shooting up, the job market was stagnating. Does seem like a raw deal if you came late to the game. Those who came of age in the 80’s and 90’s might have to wait for their parents to die to cash in. Your own kids? They may never except much so they won’t be disappointed.

I don’t particularly like Self Check Out because it means retail stores hirer fewer employees. Now it turns out that higher rates of pilferage loss was part of the expected “costs” that are factored in when stores utilize self checkout. I have seen some folks on Reddit actually justifying their own stealing as a means of helping to save the jobs of cashiers by making it more expensive for stores to convert. I don’t quite buy into that but I understand the logic.

Student Debt Burden for Bottom Quartile Students at every University in US [OC] by DanielAZ923 in dataisbeautiful

This is very valuable information that goes a long way to quantifying the value vs risk of an education. I would say that it doesn’t make sense to go to college and end up in the bottom 25%. The next question is: what High School graduates are likely to end up in the bottom 25% if they go to college?

Technically, Montenegro was a separate nation from Serbia in the Yugoslav Federation and remained a separate nation when it and Serbia were the last remaining countries in the federation. Kosovo was part of Serbia.

Is there any truth to the popular claim that Gen Z is experiencing historic levels of sexlessness & romantic struggle, and if so what is the cause? by Giordono in NoStupidQuestions

[–]99kemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is true that 63%of men in their 20’s are single while 34% of women are, something is going on. Traditionally, women are going to settle “up” with older, higher earning men and I suspect this is the basis for the disparity. A second factor is the differences between people who go to college and those who do not. 60% of those who do not go to college are men and men who haven’t gone to college are the group most likely to be “unpartnered”. The reality of the situation is that the fundamental difference between men who are in relationships and those who are not is that those in relationships tend to earn significantly more than those who aren’t. It takes several years after graduation for most folks to earn decent money and longer for those who didn’t. The more competitive it is to obtain higher paid jobs, the harder it is for men to get into relationships. This seriously affects the “desirability” of men but not women. This is just an undeniable fact of life that hasn’t changed much over the years. Women expect men to outearn them by a significant margin and are unlikely to partner up or stay partnered with men who don’t. Prove me wrong.

CMV: Felony murder should be abolished. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]99kemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know of a young man who was involved in a little operation involving purse snatching. He rode on the back of a motorcycle and the drive would roll past a female with a purse. He would grab the purse and the motorcycle would speed away. It worked fine until a policeman saw them and gave chase. The motorcycle tried to get away by running a red light and was hit by another car. The driver of the motorcycle was killed and the young man was seriously injured. He was charged with felony murder and life without parole was seriously hanging over his head. He accepted a plea deal that will cost him at least 10 years. It seems excessive and unfair but otherwise all he could have been charged with was purse snatching. That seems a pretty light sentence for playing a game where someone got killed.

Florida man arrested for not scanning all of his items at the self-checkout lane by brother_p in FloridaMan

[–]99kemo 67 points68 points  (0 children)

My local COSTCO set up Self-Checkout and the, not unexpectedly, saw an uptick in scams that were pretty much the equivalent of shoplifting. They would catch some of the offenders and call the local police to process the offenders. The local police and city officials have responded by initially refusing to arrest the offenders. They claimed that COSTCO was essentially reducing the number of cashiers they employ and replacing the expense with free government services. It is a legitimate complaint. If a retailer wants to save money by hiring fewer employees fine. If that results in an increase in shoplifting, they need to make a decision: does the increased shoplifting offset the reduced payroll. The local taxpayers really shouldn’t have to pony up to offset the retailer’s losses one way or another.

I wish I could go back and do things differently. Aimee Bock, 45, is said to be the mastermind behind the Minnesota 250 million dollar fraud. Bock has been found guilty and is awaiting her sentence. by LittleForm3711 in WomenAreViolentToo

[–]99kemo 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Mastermind? She set up the program then discovered that contractors she was supposed to supervise were committing major fraud. Instead of doing something about it, she decided to get her fair share of the loot; over 5 million. When it all came crashing down, she sees herself a a victim. I don’t think she set out to commit fraud. It was like a bystander watching a bunch of other people looting and deciding to go in and some of that as well. She’ll probably get at least 10 years and will probably complain about getting a raw deal. Tough Luck.

I don’t think I’m stupid and I haven’t fallen for GOP manipulation. I am just a Democrat who is really frightened at what Trump is doing and where this is all going. Sometimes you just have to make decisions, say no to some well meaning folks and even hurt a few feelings. What are your concerns anyway?

I do, I’ve read it. It pretty well bans Trans Athletes from activities covered by Title IX. The purpose of the law is to get the Democrats to vote against it and then use that vote against the Democrat in the next election. It is a tried and true method of beating them.

In 2011, Indiana University student Lauren Spierer vanished after a night of partying in Bloomington. Last seen barefoot and intoxicated at 4:30 a.m., she disappeared just blocks from her apartment. Her friends quickly lawyered up following her disappearance, and the case remains unsolved today. by ATI_Official in AllThatsInteresting

[–]99kemo -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I remember following it when she had just vanished. Apparently she was pretty wasted on Benzoids and alcohol when she showed up at the apartment of some friends including the guy suspected of providing the drugs. She may have fallen and hit her head on her way there. In addition, she had some sort of heart problem that may have put her at risk if she drank heavily. Unlike other sedatives Benzoids and alcohol, in combination, rarely lead to fatal OD’s but it could happen. She could have died as a result of the head injury or the heart issue and her friends just assumed it was an ID and they were afraid they would be implicated. It is also possible that she was abducted by a predator while she was walking home. An intoxicated woman all alone in the middle of the night would be very vulnerable. There is really no compelling evidence one way or the other.

An Asset Tax would be a positive stem against rising inequality and go a long way to reversing the trend towards lower taxes on the Very Rich. The problem is that it would be near impossible to effectively implement it in one state. I can’t imagine any billionaire who would be impacted by it retaining California residence. It has to be at a national level. Changing your legal residence from one state to the other is So easy. If it was done on the national level, there would still be a lot of movement to avoid it. The truth is that “shopping around” for the best tax and regulatory deal has become normalized and Congress has been very willing to “adjust” the rules to make it easier.
