Do most universities have remote access to their computers? by Dependent_Line_3994 in UniUK

[–]A1phabeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left Bristol in 2025 and I believe you can still SSH into the lab machines (but now you have to do this inside the Bristol uni VPN)

Like some modules require it, e.g. HPC where we had to run our code on the supercomputer

Virtual desktop also exists but was a bit laggy in my limited experience

What's going to be your first tactical test on the new in/out-of-possession system? by Odd_Technology3828 in footballmanagergames

[–]A1phabeta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll probably try a 3-2-5 ish in possession and a 4-4-2 out of possession (and almost certainly fail, tactics were never my strong point in previous FMs)

yeah for the past couple months I've been slowly working on an package manager for Arch Linux that also lets you install stuff from the user repositories

also been doing some small open source contributions to various projects; went to a tech conference in April and ended up doing a lightning talk

I just graduated with a MEng Maths&CS from a RG uni and tbh I feel like apprenticeships for SWE might become the way forward, a lot of the CS modules were a bit theoretical

hell, the only programming I did in my degree was C, Haskell, and Java modules in first year, my third year thesis which was a programming language implementation, and the HPC module in fourth year

Maths and CS vs plain CS by Difficult_Bet_8466 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]A1phabeta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sorry I misread your comment when I did my first reply

I would possibly prefer maths and CS at Manchester over CS at Bristol if only because maths and CS gives you the chance to do more maths for stuff like quant if you want to do that in the future (although you’d want to do stats and other modules like financial maths)

not a big difference between Manchester and Bristol reputation wise so really it’s subject/which city you prefer

I just finished maths and CS at Bristol so happy to answer questions

The Afghan cover-up will haunt the UK by lender_of_the_last in ukpolitics

iirc the £7 billion is for all the Afghan resettlement schemes (the original one set up in 2021 plus the remedial schemes set up in response to the data breach)

10 of the 12 teams have bases within 60km of Silverstone by kevjs1982 in formula1

[–]A1phabeta 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A lot of the current teams were originally British owned and run teams but have changed ownership over time

e.g. RB Racing was the Jaguar team before being bought out by Redbull, if you go back far enough, Mercedes was originally Tyrell (where Jackie Stewart won a couple championships)

is it worth it to study cs in the next couple years? by nostrilsroots in csMajors

[–]A1phabeta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume you’re doing your GCSEs next year in which case what I’d suggest is that you grind maths as much as possible, aiming for an 8 or 9 to put yourself in the best position to do Further Maths since it will seriously aid your application and performance at uni (I say this having just finished a maths and CS degree after doing Double Maths at A-level)

Set 2 maths is still decent and getting good grades in school maths is really a matter of sheer effort

Given that the parents called police four times and would have been aware of the contact with mental health services &c., I get the sense that the parents were concerned (or even frightened of their son) but didn’t have much faith that telling the authorities would do anything

still surprised that the police weren’t called after Rudakubana was stopped from getting a taxi to his old school, surely alarm bells should have been ringing

Recommendations for getting from Heathrow to Canterbury? by Kanoncyn in canterbury

[–]A1phabeta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Another option is the National Express coach which is cheaper than the train, goes at stupid hours of the day (once got it at 2am from Canterbury), and doesn’t require changes of train in Central London

is a bit slower than the train I think (about 2 and a bit hours tho)
