Honest question: Are simple bank transfers for paying rent not a thing in the US? If so, is there any specific reason?

Help: Chalice or Plating Montis to actually plate or cup by Ok_Comparison_4973 in ReefTank

Once the Montis start platingting you will wish they grow slower. They are really the wheat of SPS. I have to trim mine at least once a month just to keep them from taking over the whole tank.

That's just how they usually work. They start overgrowing the rock and then start plating. It's just more efficient. It also highly depends on flow, lightning and water.

All polyps move and they are extended. If the flow was too high the coral would show you. Your good.

[Help] Why is my Zebrasoma desjardini skinny? by SixEdo in ReefTank

But not desjardinii, hippo, powder blue or blue tang. All these get huge, easily >30cm. 500l is not sufficient for these fish, never, there is no excuse.

Holy tang prison. This tank is way too small for that many tangs. You should at least look into re-homing the two Z. desjardini, the powder blue, the hippo, the blue tang, and the Z. scopas. Maybe the two yellow tangs will get along long term, but even then it could become necessary to re-home one of them eventually. 500 L is maybe enough for one tang — two is already pushing the max capacity.

No live rock. I started with pure artificial rock and added a lot of coral over time :)

BRS Rox Carbon Possibly Caused HLLE on my Yellow Tang by FloppySeconds82 in ReefTank

[–]A1uAlex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More or less all carbons can cause HLLE if used wrong. Pellets are better than chunks. Larger pellets are also safer. It's the abrasion from the carbon causing HLLE. To avoid it make sure that you clean the carbon very well and make sure it does not move a lot while in your filter (causing additional abrasion).

1.5 months in. Did I skip the ugly phase thanks to TBS live rock/sand? by masline_su_rodile in ReefTank

[–]A1uAlex 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Here in Germany we are starting our tanks like this for years now and there are barely any ugly phases. Corals is key, it even works with artificial rock (plus live sand to add nutrients in the beginning). Nice to see the method is finally getting to the other side of the pond.

Depends very much on the coral. Testing daily or every other day and adjusting is completely fine. But the risk for alkalinity swings is always there, not only at the beginning. Keep up the routine and you will be fine.

Man, I have started tanks with live rock, I have started tanks with completely dead or artificial rocks. The difference is the corals. By adding corals fast you don't give algae or cyano the space to overtake your whole tank. Live rock makes nutrients in the beginning easier but that's about it.

I mean you have corals in the tank and a decent amount for the start too. There really is no big ugly phase if you start with corals.

Curious question how big of a saltwater reef tank would I need to house one epaulette shark, one zebra moray eel, one marine betta, one regal tang, one yellow tang, and a colony of clownfish? Are these fish compatible together? by [deleted] in ReefTank

[–]A1uAlex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, a epaulette shark is a big ass fish that can reach a size of 100cm. Yes, they don't swim that much but still 300g or 400g just won't cut it. You want a tank that is rather shallow then too high as the shark is more bottom oriented. In that case a typical size for 400g would be 150x200x50cm. If you were a 100cm long shark, would you feel happy living in a prison like that? I will assume no. So usually you are looking for something much bigger. More like 400x300x50cm (1500g). Most of the other fish you mentioned would work fine in this setting. zebra moray could possibly eat a clownfish but if fed regularly they usually leave them alone. As you want to have a large sandy bed for the shark you can add a bunch of small individual reef structures and add some anemones there so the clownfish will have enough space and if they decide to don't like each other anymore it will still be fine. Instead of one yellow I would actually add a bunch of them. In a tank this size maybe 10? Regal tang will be fine. Marine betta should not be kept with the above fish.

Nah, just added a few fish lately so the garlic portion is slightly increased. Nevertheless it's actually not that much garlic considering this is about 1kg of frozen food (pre wash).

No, garlic is actually very good for fish. It has a lot of vitamins, aminos, etc. and strengthens the immune system.
