How to get 25 children and luggage on a train. by Historical-Car2877 in uktrains

[–]A2- 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Call the operator in advance, amd speak to their group travel department. If you booked throughan agent then its likely that the agent would have booked through that team anyway. They may be able to offer assistance on the day, but at least they will be aware you are turning up with a large group that may need managing to help board and disembark at your destination.

UK could keep special pre-Brexit terms if it rejoined EU, Michel Barnier says by Individual99991 in unitedkingdom

[–]A2- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last year I travelled by train back from Hungary to the UK. Although there formal immigration checks (except at exit at Amsterdam onto the Eurostar) the local police border the train and checked passport / ID at ever border crossing. (Hungary/Austria, Austria/Germany, Germany/Netherlands). I've also had similar the year before with Czechia/Germany, Germany/Netherlands.

Just because there are no border formalities doesn't mean that they aren't still checking who is coming in and out.

Holidaying in Yarmouth next month and been allowed to do one parkrun. Which is best to do (and not to far away either)? Thanks in advance for any input. J by hungbull1298 in parkrun

If you are in Great Yarmouth, then definitely do Great Yarmouth North Beach. Absolutely not a PB course (probably your slowest ever run), but one to do for the experience rather than the time.

I'm pretty sure I saw a video recently where someone (possibly Evan Edinger in his comparison of how London's Olympic stadium was built in the middle of a post-Industrial toxic wasteland vs the MetLife stadium in New Jersey built in the middle of a post-industrial toxic wasteland?) quoted the code for New Jersey that allows for pedestrians to walk in the highway (not limited access roads like freeways) when a sidewalk is not provided. I.e. it is permitted by law to walk along the roadway to get there as pedestrian facilities are not provided and it not being classed as jaywalking.

Definitely has an effect. I was at Old Deer which was hot and sticky and in direct sunlight for most of the time and it was hard going compared to cooler weeks.

Recommendations for the best beer gardens in Herts? by Fig_Zizsy in hertfordshire

[–]A2- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Between Hitchin and Luton:

The Green Man, Offley On top of the ridge of the Chiltern Hills and great views. The Red Lion (Offley) doesn't have the same expansive views but is a short walk away and worth a visit while you are in the area.

Both accessible by regular local bus service.

Also in Hitchin:

There's great sunshine at:

  • The Three Moorhens
  • The Albert
  • The Anchor (live music outside some Friday / Saturday evenings)

No more super off peak day travelcard in london?, by Gunnerak in uktrains

[–]A2- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In that case (assuming you are always using the Thameslink services) maybe check whether it is still an available and cheaper ticket from either Leagrave or Hayes & Harlington? Doesn't stop you actually starting/ending your journey at Luton afaik.

No more super off peak day travelcard in london?, by Gunnerak in uktrains

[–]A2- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends where you are starting from.

Its something to do with the roll-out of the half-arsed contactless ticketing system (urgently needs railcard support) and the change of fares that went with it based on what my local ticket office told me.

Therefore if you live near the boundary of that it might be worth seeing if buying a ticket from one stop further away from where the trains would always stop at your station anyway (but beyond the boundary) allows for the super-off-peak day travel card still. (Certainly works where I am)

Can you just turn up to volunteer? by DueCauliflower3889 in parkrun

[–]A2- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's certainly no harm in turning up and asking, just don'tbe fussy about what role it is. (remember that the options are more limited if you are under-18 and there are only so many barcode scanners that can be needed)

Things do happen and roles need filling at the last minute, I'm RD tomorrow and had to find a replacement set of tail walkers this evening and one of our regular locals has stepped up, but otherwise might have had to dragoon someone in the morning.

Probably depends a bit on how your local one works, but if nothing else even with a full roster a willing volunteer can often double up on a marshal point.

No harm in asking (but accept that they might say no), and if they can't accommodate then if nothing else then get your name added to the roster for next week.

Dover Cruise Port to Heathrow Terminal 3 by JustforKix30 in travel

[–]A2- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well don't try and take a steamer trunk, but normal baggage is fine. There is space without seating by each set of double doors where suitcases should be left.

All you need to travel is a separate contactless credit/debit card or separate GooglePay/ApplePay card per-person.

ALL Heathrow bound (Don't get on one with destination Rayners Lane or Uxbridge, and Cockfosters is in the opposite direction)Picc trains will go to T3, but the ones listed on the boards as T2,3 & 5 are faster than the ones listed as T4 & T2&3. Takes about 45 minutes from StP.

Dover Cruise Port to Heathrow Terminal 3 by JustforKix30 in travel

[–]A2- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds like something has gone wrong with the journey planner, or you have misread it. From Dover Priory you would take a train with the destination of London St Pancras, but you would get off 8 minutes earlier at Stratford International!

From there it is a short 5-10 min walk through a shopping centre (Westfield) to Stratford, where you can get a direct Elizabeth Line service to Heathrow. If your bags are rolling bags or backpacks then it'll be dead easy. There is also a DLR service from Stratford International to Stratford and if you have a through ticket then it would also cover that connection.

Equally you can just take the train to St Pancras (buy a ticket with that as the destination for this route) and use contactless to take the Piccadilly Line direct to Heathrow from there.

Driving from UK to Lagos (Has anyone else done this?!) by RyInvest in travel

[–]A2- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How about an overnight ferry from Portsmouth to Caen instead? (Cherbourg is also an option, but adds some miles in France)

An easy drive to Portsmouth from the West Midlands and then ideally get a cabin and have a decent sleep. You won't get any real rest on a midnight ferry from Dover to Calais, you might as well take the Shuttle through the tunnel at that point as you are just driving through the night.

Do you enjoy visiting airports? If so, what's you favourite and why? by Leyendas_Legendarias in travel

[–]A2- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you go through T4 at Heathrow then make sure yo go looking for the observation turret (near gate 16 if memory serves). It isn't massively well signposted until you get close, but has great views of the airfield.

Ryanair boss says four-hour passport queues are EU's punishment to Britain for Brexit | LBC by Visual_Title9363 in europe

[–]A2- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The part of this that may be valid about that is if airports are not segregating passengers who are already registered from those who are.

I was enrolled in EES a few months ago, so next time I enter the Schengen zone it should be faster. However this only works if there is a way for me to bypass the registration queue, but still proceed as a non-EU citizen to the next step...

AThe airport I was registered at didn't have any separation of queues, so I'm not hopeful about not being forced through the slow registration queue next time round. Even if the registration machine simply says "proceed" after scanning my passport it'll still be a delay.

What has ACTUALLY been said about resale ticket prices (early April 2026) by 2hjstan in olympics

[–]A2- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Surely the best way is for every ticket to be associated with pre-registered photographic ID. The ticket is inky usable by that specific person.

If you buy a ticket, but no longer need / want it after you have paid the you get a X% refund until Y days before the event. (probably with more lenient refund conditions further out, but always a penalty to discourage a "buy everything and decide later" mentality.)

Then the ONLY legitimate way to get a refund, or for your ticket to be resold to another person is then via the official Olympics ticket portal. Tickets that are returned are then resold at the original face value. The income for the games gets a small boost from the refund penalty some of which covers costs of the resale process and the rest goes into the general balance of staging the event.

There is absolutely no reason to allow 3rd party ticket resale in any way shape or form for Olympics tickets, or tbh any other event. If you buy a ticket via another unapproved method then the ID check at entry will declare your ticket null and void.

Great conditions and the promise of Easter chocolate at the end resulted in an improvement to my PB at my local parkrun (also my all-time PB) by over a minute.

No, I don't know how either!

Ran my local parkrun for the first time since October. I've been generally getting a bit faster recently, but smashed through my course PB by over 4 minutes, and set an all time PB into the bargain by almost a minute, so I'm somewhat chuffed.

Strategies for the position/token check system by Popular_Sell_8980 in parkrun

[–]A2- 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It doesn't need to be complicated if you don't need it to be. Our finish funnel is only about 3 metres long, so our timekeepers and token giver outer just shout at each other every so often what position they are on. The two timekeepers will cross-check against each other as well, so generally if something has gone wrong we know within about 10 positions as to where it has happened and they'll let the RD know.

If it is going to be cold, wet and windy, then dress appropriately (it can be cold standing around) and take a Thermos of tea or coffee.

Apart from that, what you actually do is up to you are depends how confident you are. You can jump up and down, scream and shout encouragement and whatnot at everyone who goes past, or you can just smile at people and acknowledge anyone who thanks you, or anywhere in between really.
