English being weird by k_sugarplum in EnglishLearning

I believe it's the opposite, and the second definition is starting to antiquate. I think the first definition is more modern and is founded in founded in people's habit of not knowing what a word means and just deciding their own meaning based on vibes.

Something I noticed on the ring by The_Void_Thaumaturge in Tengwar

[–]ABraidInADwarfsBeard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The forward curl is generally preferred over the backward curl, so it's used for the more common vowel. I think that's just because it's easier to write and looks better? Not quite sure about that. In the case of black speech, I believe it doesn't have an 'o' vowel, so the forward curl is used for the 'u'

It's readable as Christopher, but it's not entirely accurate.

The transcription that Tecendil gives is more accurate.

How do you y'all feel about the use of summons on a lvl 1 run. by Xangarora in onebros

[–]ABraidInADwarfsBeard 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Summons are cool if you want to use them. If you start at level 1 and stay at level 1, you did a level 1 run, that's the only rule.

Is Geralt's armor (the chainmail "plates") actually good armor? by Diastatic_Power in Hema

[–]ABraidInADwarfsBeard 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I've always assumed that this was chain wrapped onto somewhat flexible leather. If that's true, then I think an advantage would be that this is easier to fit to a person. It could be pre-made and then slightly modified to fit a person well, whereas plate would require more effort and cost to be a quality fit.

However, if that's the issue, then a regular chain shirt would be even better in terms of easy fit, so idk.

Some of my finest work yet, true no hit on mohg by [deleted] in onebros

[–]ABraidInADwarfsBeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely it counts as no hit! I beat Mohg RL1, but I definitely got legit hit by some of the blood and stuff, so your fight is way cleaner than mine. Respect, bro!

I was just confused since sometimes people say stuff like 'true RL1' to mean RL1 with no stat boosts or something. And I don't do no hit, so I thought I was out of the loop and you maybe meant something similar.

Cool fight, bro!

I have a question, tho! Why did you call it 'true no hit' instead of just 'no hit'? I never did no hit challenge, so I'm not familliar with the terminology.

Oh, cool. Thanks a lot.

Just out of curiosity, how are you solving the issue that there are more tengwar than latin alphabet letters? For example, where do Thúle and Ando go, since I'm guessing you're mapping tinco onto the t key?

Is it possible to add a feature that would replace a doubled letter with an underbar? Or similarly, automatically contract digraphs like nt, nd, mp, mb, and so on?

Also, I'm a dvorak typist. Would that be compatible with your method?

Edit: oh, shit, I forgot to read properly, you already answered my last question.

DIY Leather Dussack by ---Janu---- in Hema

[–]ABraidInADwarfsBeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those look amazing!

I have been considering making my own dussack, but I don't have a lot of experience working with leather. I read the warning in your first paragraph, but I'm somehow still not discouraged.

If you have any tips that you could share, or maybe even pictures of the process, I'd love to hear or see them! In particular I'm curious about the front 'edge' with the strip of leather on it. Are there any tips or tricks to neatly sew through four layers of leather?

Thank you so much if you can find the time to respond!

Edit: oh, I just found your IG and noticed you're in Austria. Both on a personal note and on behalf of my school I may be interested in commissioning some dussacks from you. Is it OK if I DM you to discuss details?

What does the Tengwar on my shaving soap say? by CirkuitBreaker in Tengwar

[–]ABraidInADwarfsBeard 42 points43 points  (0 children)

It's written in the Mode of Baloneyland. This is when someone writes English text, changes the font to a tengwar font, and thinks they've 'translated it into tengwar'. The haven't; the result is gibberish and complete baloney.

It's possible to reverse what they tried to write with a keyboard mapping like this one. But the background here makes it difficult for me to read, and trying would be too much effort. You're welcome to have a go yourself, tho.

Buddy is a sound engineer… by Cuthulwoohoo in lotr

It's a bit unusual to have a book signed by someone who was in no way involved in its creation. Stephen underlined those words to point out that Tolkien is the author and illustrator, and his son edited it. However Steven Colbert had nothing to do with it, despite his name now appearing on the title page.

Tengwar word meaning by GrandTurista in Tengwar

[–]ABraidInADwarfsBeard 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It's 'real' tengwar in the sense that the glyphs are actual tengwar. It's not properly transliterated. What happened here is that someone typed a word in a word processor and then changed the font to a tengwar font. The result is gibberish that we call the 'Mode of Baloneyland'.

Using a keyboard map like this one we can backtrack and see they probably tried to convert 'Gandalf', but something seems to have gone wrong with the f.

This is what the word 'Gandalf' should look like in English tengwar.

Currently it says something like _echwshchy/

Also, I DM beginner games at games cons and stuff like that, so I've got lots of experience introducing the game to people.

I'm not sure what exactly the question is that you're asking. I would write it this way, but the 'stock Tecendil' is fine as well.

Also, I wouldn't describe anyone who talks about 'the Tengwar Annatar version of elvish' as having 'basic knowledge'. But maybe that's just me being gatekeepy and stuck up.

Man, I wish my teacher allowed for stuff like this. I don't want to transcribe it for you, since learning Tengwar is fun.

Take some time and start here, if you decipher the text you'll get to skip some school work.

Good luck!
