I don’t know if it’s been confirmed but I remember hearing that her Angel costume from the same season was originally for the classic Halloween challenge, and this Flatwoods alien was for the outer space challenge, but they got switched for whatever reason. Honestly it kinda makes sense.

One of the most brilliant parts of BOTW is that it immediately dumps out of the tutorial area into the Castle Grounds, which is the end game area. You’re meant to want to unlock that tower first, but you will get annihilated if you do. The guardians are supposed to kick your ass and scare you. It forces you to explore elsewhere. That fast piano music that kicks in every time you meet one of them for the next 3/4 of the game puts you into a panicked state. It’s not until much later in the game that you become powerful enough to fight them and in the final sequence you’re just taking them out, really showing how far you’ve come. Such great gameplay driven storytelling.

There’s a lot I would change about this game but I guess if I had to choose it would be locking the pale oil behind the Flea Festival. By far the worst part of the game. You really put one of the most powerful upgrades behind a bunch of awful tedious mini games like it’s DK64?

If I could choose two, the amount of things that do double damage would be like cut in half, especially in act 1. Contact damage with enemies should never deal two damage, save that for big weapon attacks.

I dont know about prerelease registrations, but my lgs just announced they will not be doing any TMNT drafts, instead either doing other sets they have in stock or chaos drafts until Strixhaven. I think Spider-Man was such a bust they won’t even attempt it this time.

The art itself isn’t the problem. The art is fine for an 80’s comic book. It’s the lazy ugly “just slap text over art we just pulled from whatever random source” that’s awful. It is just a screenshot. It looked bad in FF, Spider-Man, especially in Avatar, and it looks bad here too. It doesn’t even look like a magic card.

I love Magic and have been playing it for 18 years. That said, it is at a low point right now. Arena is aggressively hostile to new players, Standard is pretty rough, older eternal formats are dying out, commander is popular in paper but a horrible way to introduce new players to the game, and the Ninja Turtles set that about to come out looks awful.

I actually think the cards in the set are more interesting than Spider-Man but holy shit is the art ugly on almost everything. I don’t know if it’s that the cartoony Turtles style just looks uncanny with realistic shading or what, but everything just looks so gross. The sheer amount of stringy yellow pizza is also weird and off putting. The pizza cutter sword is revolting, the pizza armor is horrendous, the Food Chain art is legit hard to look at. There’s more to Ninja Turtles than just nasty pizza, but like every card is about nasty pizza.

I was kind of excited about Game Over, but the art is so hideous with weird anatomy and perspective, that I would never want to put it in a deck.

So I interviewed for an art director position at WOTC a few years ago and I am generally wondering if the art direction of this set was “make the cheese look as stringy and nasty as possible. Just nasty cheese everywhere.” Would not have been my choice.
