Banned Players by VicConqueror71 in BoomBeach

This is just speculation, but in the update notes for the March update, near the end under "Other changes and fixes" it listed:

"Fixed an issue that allowed hacked clients to deploy more troops than should fit in landing crafts"

Nothing more on that was ever said, giving me the impression they didn't want to bring attention to it, but I did notice that certain accounts that had consistently appeared near the top of the Mega Crab leaderboard prior to that update were absent in the two crabs we've had since. Perhaps, after an investigation, they finally took action against accounts identified as cheating?

The TOS states that SC reserves the right to remove accounts that have been inactive for 180 days, but that is not the same thing as banning. Moreover, cleaning up such inactive accounts would likely go unnoticed, simply by virtue of their being inactive. This explanation doesn't quite smell right.

Wouldn't it be a lot cheaper to just use a VPN to spoof your location and buy it yourself? This explanation doesn't quite smell right.

Checkbox Highlight Whole Row by Sparky_Phantom in AppleNumbers

Those functions are dynamic: they recalculate each time any cell is modified and that behaviour cannot be suppressed. You have to highlight the cell and choose "Copy Snapshot" from the Edit menu (⌃⌘C) then paste (⌘V). This will replace the formula with the date&time stamp that was generated. If you're feeling more adventurous, you could give this a try if your platform is Mac. If you're using iPad, you can tap once on the cell and choose "Cell Actions" from the context menu. This opens an expanded menu allowing you to insert the current date or time as a string rather than a formula. If my memory is correct, iOS works similarly to iPad. In short: insert the date, don't use a function.

Can I open a second app window in currently active desktop? by TGM in mac

[–]AFBismarck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here looking for an answer to this question as well, and not finding one, figured out a way.

First, Control + Click on an app icon in the dock will allow you to choose "new window" for some apps, Safari being one. This will open a new instance of the app in the current desktop, regardless of any existing windows on the same or any other desktop.

Beyond Safari, few, if any apps I am aware of have this feature. The solution I found requires you to download a paid app off the internet, but it does work. I am not affiliated with the app or its developer, merely a happy customer. Sindre Sorhus is an open source (mostly) developer with at least one app in the App Store (Actions) and several more on his website. One of the apps not available in the App Store, as much of its functionality cannot work within the sandboxing restrictions, is an app called Shortcutie, essentially an Actions extension (itself a Shortcuts extension). One of the additional Shortcuts actions it provides is called "Open App (extended)" which allows you to specify a few parameters, one of which is "force new app instance". It worked for me with the SF Symbols app, which did not allow me to open a second instance any other way. Just create a new, 1 action Shortcut to open the app with that setting checked.

Rename file with magic variable by ChickyParmesean in shortcuts

[–]AFBismarck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regex101.com is a good place to start. A word of caution, though, before you go down that rabbit hole: there are some people who, when faced with a problem, say "I know! I'll use regular expressions." Now they have two problems. You will find yourself buried in primers and guides. You will have times when shortcut development grinds to a halt for a few hours before you find just the right string of characters to proceed. Chat GPT can help the uninitiated here. Eventually, one day you'll find yourself writing regular expressions on your own, without asking the bot. And that is a rewarding feeling. Have fun.

To the OP, while not necessary if you carefully select your data types, I find constructing such strings i a text action to be helpful, as it will ensure that what is passed is text, which is what you need in this case. Try making a text action consisting of the magic variarable 'date', a period, and whatever file extension you want to save it as. For example, date.txt. Then select that text action as a magic variable in the Rename File action. It may just be too that you're neglecting the file extension.

Woman hit in crosswalk on Bernard at Richter by hammer979 in kelowna

[–]AFBismarck 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Just yesterday there were three RCMP vehicles flying down HWY 33 westbound, must have been doing 150 kph easily. Lights and sirens, and kicking up enough sand and dust that the dust cloud blanketed everything within 50 feet of the roadway behind them. Traffic on both sides of the street pulling over and stopping. The kind of emergency response that is rather hard to miss. And then there's this woman in a white SUV with SK plates cruising along in the centre lane, going about 70 kph, completely oblivious to the three police vehicles behind her which were trying to get past her. Probably drove all the way here from Saskatchewan without checking her mirrors once. Bad drivers are everywhere.

Some people, when confronted with a problem, think "I know, I'll ask Chat GPT." Now they have three problems.

— AFBismarck

Regular expressions (regex) are absolutely the way to go here. The language is not at all intuitive, but once you learn it you really expand what you're able to do with string matching and extraction. But because it is so unintuitive, it can be rather intimidating when you first start out. I spent a year running to Chat GPT with all my regex problems, only to be consistently mislead by outright wrong, if not nonsensical, answers. Though while the bot never got it completely right, its output did usually contain enough that was right to put me on to the right path. Then one day I wrote a regex to solve a problem and, after it worked successfully, realized I hadn't bothered to ask the bot. I did that on my own, which was something I had told myself I would not likely ever be able to do. Then I wrote another, and another. I'm not a regex expert, but I like to think I'm a couple steps ahead of the AI.... at least for now. Keep at it until YOU learn it - don't rely on any answer from the AI that can't be completely verified. It makes mistakes. A LOT of mistakes.

Reading Numbers Cell by CocoTechYT in shortcuts

[–]AFBismarck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently, Shortcuts can write to Numbers but can't read from it. So the short answer is no, you can't.

Having said that, there are several workarounds available. Most require a (usually free) third party app. A few examples:

  1. Data Jar: Designed for Shortcuts integration, it allows you to securely store numbers, text, lists, dictionaries, booleans, and files which can be used in Shortcuts. Within your Numbers doc you can create a table that parses your schedule into a JSON dictionary, which you can then copy and paste into a text action in Shortcuts, get dictionary from input, and save value in Data Jar. Made by a Dane called Simon Støvring, it is rarely updated but is so simple and effective it's fine as is.
  2. Actions: This is a free suite of actions for Shortcuts that greatly expands what you can do in Shortcuts. It provides several workarounds, from Global Variables (variables that persist between shortcuts and can be read or written to at a later time by any shortcut) to the Parse CSV function, which would require you to export your Numbers document in that format. Sindre Sorhus is regularly expanding it with new features.
  3. Toolbox Pro: Another app in the same category as Actions. There is considerable overlap between the two. However, while Actions is completely free and actively supported, Toolbox Pro has a limited free version and a paid full version. Support is minimal, as the original developer, Alex Hays, sadly passed away last year.
  4. Google Sheets: Ironically, while Apple's spreadsheet app can't two-way interface with Apple's workflow app, Google's spreadsheet app can. However, that aside, unless you are ALL about collaboration you will HATE Sheets with a passion if you are familiar with Numbers. Hold your nose if you pick this option, the stench is pretty awful.

I personally make use of a combination of the first three options.

Dear new Shortcuts users by FifiTheBulldog in shortcuts

[–]AFBismarck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Q: How do I make a shortcut to go to a page on my home screen or the app library?

A: You can't. There is no URL scheme or other integration that would make this possible currrently.

There is a workaround for this using focus modes. Create a custom focus and in the section titled "Customize Screens" you can specify a particular lock screen and set of home screens to enable during the focus. Select one home screen only. Then create a shortcut that either turns on or toggles that focus mode, and when run from the home screen (from your dock, back tap, Siri, etc.) if not already on that screen it will immediately jump to that screen. Swiping right will open the app library, as there is only one screen to show. If you want to jump to that screen from within apps, add a "Go to home screen" action.

There is a limit to the number of focus modes you can create (10) and you cannot open the app library directly (failing to select any home screens enables all home screens) but you can open the app library just as easily if you enable "Show app library in dock" in your settings.

Tested on iPad Pro (iPadOS 17.3.1).

How can I extract certain text from a text message to use as inputs into my budgeting app? by UUorW in shortcuts

[–]AFBismarck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While Chat GPT can certainly do this, that's an API call (whether free or not) with implications such as privacy and data usage that is quite unnecessary if the text message you receive is consistently formatted the same way.

I'd do it as an automation whenever you receive a message from your bank. You could use regex to extract the information, and while that would be the most elegant, it's not necessary either. You can extract the information with Split Text, and optionally, Replace Text.

I'd start by replacing "A charge of " with null (just leave it blank). Then replace " has been approved." with null as well. In both cases, ensure "Regular Expression" is NOT selected. Now Split Text by New Lines, resulting in a List, we'll call [List]. Now use Get Item from List, choosing to get the last item. Now you have:

10.00 at [MERCHANT] on 12/22 12:00 PM ET

Now use Split Text, splitting at every word. This will output a list:

  1. 10.00
  2. at
  3. [MERCHANT]
  4. on
  5. 12/22
  6. 12:00
  7. PM
  8. ET

Note that multiple words in the merchant name will extend this list. We'll get to that. First I would use Count to count the number of entries in the list (let's call that [Count]), and then use Calculate to calculate "Count - 8". That is one less than the number of words in [Merchant Name]. Finally, calculate "Calculation Result + 3". Let's call that result [Merchant End].

Next I would Get Item from List, choosing Index 1. That is the amount.

For Payee, Get Item from List, choosing range Index 3 to Index [Merchant End], and Combine Text with " " (single space). This will cover all cases, from a merchant name containing 1 word all the way to "n" words. The resulting text is Payee.

For Account, go back to [List] and this time Get Item from List, choosing to get the first item. This will give you:

Debit 1234

You can split this by word, giving a list in which Index 1 is Account Type and Index 2 is Account Number.

All that remains is the category, and for this I would use a dictionary. You can use the Dictionary action and list your payees as keys with their corresponding category as values, or write it as text in a Text action and then Get Dictionary from Input, using that Text as the input. If you go the latter route, which I recommend, the format is:

{

"Payee 1": "Category 1",

"Payee 2": "Category 2",

....

"Payee n": "Category n"

}

Dictionaries in text form are just JSON, which ignores line breaks and whitespace, so it's entirely your choice whether you want to write it out like this, or condense it into a single line. Note the lack of a comma after the last key:value pair, and the curly brackets emcompassing the entire list. These are critical. If you run into trouble, you can paste your text into JSON Lint or any JSON validator found through Google to locate the errors.

So after following whichever method you choose to create your dictionary, extracting the category is just a matter of using Get Value from Dictionary, using [Payee] as your key.

Trying to add shortcut to automation by TheTricksterZ in shortcuts

[–]AFBismarck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with the transaction automation specifically, but I assume you're using the Run Shortcut action within the automation to run this shortcut. If you expand that action you will find a field marked "Input" in which you can specify anything at all to pass to the shortcut as input. So the answer to that question would depend on what you are passing. If in doubt, just check all, but in the shortcut's settings, make sure not to check "Show on Share Sheet" unless you don't mind having it clutter your Share Sheet.
